Today, I’m diving deeper into the origami side of Paper Knight in the 3D world. The idea of making the pieces foldable — both dice and knight — felt right from the start, but now it’s time to test it.
I found two nice “recipes” for the folds. Funnily enough, the first comes from WikiHow: How to Make a Paper Origami Cube, mainly method 1, which uses just one sheet of paper. It’s simple, sturdy, and fun to fold, which is important since the folding is part of the experience.
The second is the Paper Knight by Joel Stern, from the YouTube channel LKorigami: ORIGAMI KNIGHT (Joel Stern). This one is more intricate and gives a charming little knight figure.
I’ve tried folding both a few times now, and I’m feeling confident in my folding skills, but less confident about the concept as it stands. They both require a fair amount of paper, and in this iteration, I end up folding over parts of the text, which feels clunky. I like that everything fits on one page, but seeing text hidden or crushed in folds bothers me.
For now, I’m experimenting with layouts where the folded parts don’t interfere as much with the rules or flavor text. It’s a puzzle — but one worth solving. I want the folding to feel like magic, not compromise.
Back to the table (and the folds)!
