Great game tonight!

The Basics: A Superhero RPG
A downloadable game

Tonight my regular game sesh (of UVG) was cancelled due to a player being sick, so I was able to run a game of The Basics with one of the regular players and another friend. Wow! We had a great time. They each made new players and I was able to run the first part of an introductory (Level 1) scenario that I've been working out. It was great to see how easily and quickly my two players tonight picked up the game, they're both experienced and know my style, so there's that. But one thing I'd been wondering about was how quickly and easily questions could be solved narratively around using powers, considering the combinations of powers they ran, and it was very smooth. One of them had a character with intangibility (rolled) and elemental Air (selected). The other had Create Illusion (rolled) and Telekinesis (selected). These ended up being very fun combinations that they got pretty creative with, which was certainly the point of it all. One thing that came up was around whether intangibility was a mental based power or mystic. And, essentially we came to the conclusion that it could be either one depending on the character, and what that player wanted to do.

A couple of things I'm considering making some changes to...

On the topic of Pressure Moments. We wanted to roll to use powers more, but there were definitely times that felt more high stakes, like 'pressure moments' should be. And, in the rules I say don't bother to roll if it isn't a pressure moment. But rolling ended up leading to some fun moments when failure happened, or successes. And they didn't feel like the pressure moments in all instances. I think a lot of tables might lean towards this kind of play naturally, but I may write something up on the topic or adjust some wording.

I also came across a few typos and areas I may revise in slight ways for clarity. Anyway...

I think the game makes it clear that narrative play takes precedent and that rulings will need to be made, after all it is a one page game, essentially. And situations like that came up. My biggest victory was at the end when both players asked if we could do this again soon, we all had a blast. While certainly not perfect, The Basics is a pretty fun game, and I appreciate that.

Also, my friend Andy has been hard at work making villains and his (along with some of mine) will be in the villains book that will be added here. And he's got ideas for more! I'm excited to see all that he comes up with. The ones so far are really cool and I think will spark some good storylines.
