Goodbye Eternity's future

Hi everyone, I hope you're all doing well. I trust you've been enjoying the latest update.

Today, I wish to share some news regarding the future of Goodbye Eternity. Due to a decline in sales revenue on Itch.io, the inability to launch the game on Steam due to a ban, and rampant piracy of the game, I find myself in a difficult situation.

In order to continue developing the game conscientiously, some tough decisions will need to be made. This is so that everyone can enjoy the game right through to the end of the story—which, I assure you, isn't coming any time soon.

In light of these developments, I would like to give you a glimpse behind the scenes and share some figures from the analytics we set up after the latest update, in case you missed them.

For instance, if I asked you what percentage of the 70,000 copies of the game were pirated, what would your guess be? 40%? 50%? The highest guess I received was 60%... All these numbers significantly underestimate the reality; the actual figure is around 93%.

Yes, you heard correctly: 93% of the copies of the game were obtained illegally. While I am glad the game is so popular, it deeply saddens me that the financial viability of the project rests on the shoulders of the remaining 7% who support the game on Patreon, Itch.io, SubscribeStar, and Boosty.

From the bottom of my heart, thank you to all of you who support this project.

It was also decided that version 0.7.9 would be the last one to be offered free of charge. The intention behind this move is to present a demo version of the game, allowing people to familiarize themselves with the content before deciding whether or not to purchase the full version. I believe that 0.7.9, which encompasses several hours of gameplay, should suffice for players to make an informed decision.

I understand that many of you might be deceived by this news, but it's an unfortunate but necessary step towards ensuring the sustainability of this project. It's crucial to remember that creating a game is not only a time-intensive process, but also requires a substantial financial investment. To ensure that we can continue developing and improving Goodbye Eternity, we must strike a balance between offering free content and securing the financial support necessary to keep the project alive.

Of course, our decision does not mean we will stop appreciating the goodwill and dedication of our player community. In fact, we are exploring ways to reward those of you who have shown continued support throughout this journey. We also commit to maintaining the quality and richness of content for future updates, ensuring that the game remains worth your time and investment.

Lastly, we want to remind you that your feedback remains invaluable to us. We invite you to continue sharing your thoughts and suggestions as we navigate this new phase in the game's evolution.

Another important point that arose from the data is that the Android version of the game is the most played. However, it also poses a challenge as it requires the most resources. For instance, not everyone living in Brazil owns a PC or the latest smartphone, which makes the game inaccessible to some potential players.

Therefore, Selenyhr and I are now considering the future of the game and the direction it will take. The goal is not to earn more money, but to sustain this project and all future ones.

Please feel free to ask any questions you may have, and I'll be glad to answer them.

P.S: The release of version 0.8 remains unaffected by these changes, and we're still on track to launch this update in the autumn, as planned.

Hell, I bought the game and I'm already really satisfied with 0.7.1😂 telling me its gonna be free for 0.7.9? That tells me there is gonna be a bunch more content for us that actually supported it! Only thing I hope is no ntr/cheating stuff and the game seems to be doing a good job with it, keep up the good work! -

DEVV, I HOPE YOU THE BEST. I REALLY LOVE NORIKO, CAN'T WAIT FOR AUTUMN REALLY.  My Brother Interested with Noriko Too, Maybe I will bought another copy for him XD. NORIKO SUPREMACY!!!

i know youre getting a lot of shit in these comments.

im sorry all the piracy has happened ive been following this game for quite some time and got around to buying it a few days ago. its been a very good experience  i actually am getting into the story. i hope you continue to work and see it through to the end. its one of the more compelling games ive played  please dont stop it

I think it would've been fine to leave the demo at the first sex scene

(+4)(-6)

i dont know if this will help but im willing to bet most of the pirated downloads come from lewd ninja or f95zone. im pretty sure they allow owners to take down the game from there website. maybe try doing that

(+5)(-1)

That's not really gonna work, if it was that easy there would be no piracy. Imo the best solution for the Dev is to post their game themselves on these sites, and alter them slightly there e.g. make the game give a splash screen at the start guilt tripping the Pirate into paying, or have the audio be extremely compressed.

You cannot stop people from getting what they want, but you can change what they get

this, that 93% is people trying the game out as a demo and deciding it's not worth it. treating them like missed sales is like comparing view stats for the store page to buyers.

That's disheartening to hear man, its really a bummer.  Your game is definitely a benchmark for indie adult games, and I rank it up in like my top 3.  I would gladly pay for this game again, as I know the amount of work and labor that goes into projects like these.  The money is worth it, and it shows in the quality of the product.  People need to support their favorite devs/artists when they can.  Best of luck, and I'll continue to support this game in any way that I can!

(+2)(-3)

Can you make this game cheaper? That will be more people to buy it

(+7)(-1)

How could anyone even accurately track a percentage of pirating..? All I can imagine is a government body conducting some sort of warrant

(+1)(-13)

The solution is really simple, in fact, I'll let you imagine how we were able to achieve it.

(+15)(-3)

A non answer from a dev like that can mean only one thing: he made it up.

(+8)(-1)

Yeah, makes sense

(1 edit) (+3)(-1)

They compare telemetry data to sales data

(+8)

Ill buy the game if it is completed but I dont really like to buy incomplete games cause there is never a guarantee the game will be completed I wish you all the best in future endeavors though!

(+3)(-4)

These devs that take as long as a AAA game to just make some sexy animations, really need to get a clue. No one wants to pay you $10 a month for a dribble of content every 3-6 months. If you can't make a completed game, then GTFO! And the ones that think their writing isn't something we just click right on through... get an effing editor, people. Most of these games could lose 90% of the text in the game and we would miss nothing.

Next update can we hey more noriko scenes

I finished the game and I really enjoyed it, it was great and I wanted to know when the next game update will come?

I am confused. I already bought this game, am i supposed to buy it again? Also steam literally has a game on it where mc has naughty naughty with his biological sister. Hell, it has multiple. Not sure why this one was banned.

(+3)

Not at all, you bought it once, you own it for life with all future updates.

Some devs choose to charge for each update, but that's not the case here.

then how do i go on getting the newest update without paying ive been paying since like three or four updates ago to support then sumeone said i didnt have to keep paying

(+8)

I bought this on itch at a sale price of $7.00. What a bargain!
However, I had a bad experience on Patreon with a dev who I believe was simply milking subscribers; I'm not willing to sign up to a subscription service.
I do think this game when completed will be worth what I would pay for any decent full game - around $35 to $50.
I would like to continue to support you; you have earned it!
So my question is this: I understand that, having bought the game on itch, I already get access to all subsequent updates. If this is correct, how can I add further donations at my discretion, which I feel further game updates deserve?
I am happy to give you another $5 right now (I'm live in a 3rd world country, and our money is worth peanuts). I would top that up with another $5 or $10 from time to time until the game is complete.
And yes, if it's not already obvious, I love Goodbye Eternity, and I think you're doing amazing work!

(+6)(-1)

You could easily cap it now and people can make an informed decision. It's been a great ride and the $10 was well spent on this game.

(+6)

Already happily paid for, is there a patreon or something to help continue to fund this project? Would love to help keep this amazing game going

(+5)

Yes, there are options for people who would like to further support the game:

We’ve also got a Discord for the community where you can also participate in the game’s development. Check this itch.io page, there’s a Discord link in the game description ;)

(+7)(-10)
I dont even know how to piratete it... just spend 10$ and stfu
(+11)(-9)

Let me preface this by saying I have zero issue with capping the demo at any revision. That's your choice and you're welcome to release whatever you want as free content. However, much of this comes across as a complaint that people aren't "buying" the game here.

Ultimately, it boils down to this: It's buying a game, not game development. Frankly, there's still no product to steal. Taking issue with people not buying a non-existent product is nonsense. The subscription model and the everything-as-a-service ideology has really broken the concept of actually buying something for far too many people. Nobody buys a car from some guy with three wheels and a windshield sitting on the floor with the expectation that he'll get them a whole car someday.

If you want to provide a service to raise funds, do so. Regular community interaction, development content, etc. are all a service for those that wish to participate. If you simply want money in exchange for development, you're working purely on donations.

Good luck with development, as the content we do have is solid for sure, but there's a reason people have been saying "it takes money to make money" for so long. Development is expensive, but the end user shouldn't be the one footing the bill.

(+2)(-2)

I fundamentally get what you're saying about buying a full game being very different from paying to develop something unfinished.  However, I guess I just don't agree with the rest of what you say.

For one, it seems very clear to me from reading the store page that funding game development is exactly what anyone who spends money on this is doing.  It says in many places the game in unfinished and under development.  If anyone doesn't want to do that,  that's perfectly understandable and reasonable, stick to the free demo.  However, that doesn't mean there isn't anything to steal and the developers can't complain about people doing it.

This isn't a non-existent product, it's an unfinished product.  Stealing blueprints is a crime, stealing ingredients is a crime, stealing prototypes is a crime.  I just don't understand your reasoning there, it doesn't seem to match reality at all.

The service being offered for money here is a more developed version of the game and they're charging money for it.  It's not for everyone, sure, but it is a legitimate business model.

And don't even get me started on the fact that people have paid for three wheels and a windshield on the floor expecting a whole car eventually, just ask Tesla.

(+3)(-1)

It’s not a failure to adhere to reality so much as a failure to convey what I actually meant…

I said there’s no product to steal. That is not true. There is a product here. It’s still theft, yes. What I intended, was a continuation of the thought that you’re supposed to be purchasing a game, not a piece of one. As such, the game still fails to exist, so there is no game to steal. There is still work to steal, a project, etc. That wasn’t an endorsement of piracy or anything, just a failure to address what I intended to.

With that said, I think piracy is wholly irrelevant to the topic at hand here. It is run on a donation model. As such, a purchase is a donation with a maybe attached to the full game, not a purchase of a fully fledged game. So the whole tone of the initial post here about how weak “sales” are an issue and how piracy is hurting everything was a bit ridiculous. The subscribers and the early adopters are all people willing to gamble on whether it might be completed, and if things are left purely to that sort of funding, it likely won’t if past experiences hold true. The stats on sales and piracy come across as whining and even a guilt trip rather than a simple “free access is capped here going forward, donate for more updates or we look forward to seeing you upon release” as it easily could have been. Again, the piracy angle came across as a way of guilting people into donating rather than anything relevant. Piracy is everywhere. That’s not news.

The game, up to now, had been following a schedule of early access to donors but free access to everyone eventually. So the idea that anyone is significantly harming anything by not donating, which is by it’s nature, optional, is a bit strange. As I said, capping the demo is fine whenever and ultimately makes a ton of sense for precisely the reason above. What real incentive is there to support it if you can just wait? Or not if you’re really insistent on piracy I guess.

With all of that said, I believe the price should be higher upon release (if it makes it there). Incentivizing the early adopters with more than just early access to what everyone got under the delayed “demo” model or even early access to the actual game under the current capped demo model is a good plan. Especially when you’re basically using early adopters as free play testers (or people paying you to test your game for you if you want to be extra cynical about it).

And unfortunately I can’t say the car example works outside of Tesla’s incompetence either thanks to the everything as a service issue I complained about right off the bat. BMW basically licenses half of “your” car’s features to you these days… My point there was a purchase of a full product should be just that, and so many have lost sight of actual ownership of anything or manufacturers/developers finishing things before expecting to be paid by their customers.

(+3)(-3)

this is sad to hear and I doubt there's rrl a way around piracy. As someone who used to pirate a lot, I can say that even tho its morally wrong it's free lmao. But ur game rrl is one of the best in the market so I hope u can find a way to gather more sales.

(+5)(-1)

I really appreciate your honesty as a dev and it sucks that the game is not making much, because I really dig the art style, and I found myself intrigued in the story since I played the demo in 2022, but there's just not enough content in the current version of the game, for you to be asking people to purchase the game. You can ask for support on Patreon and all the other sites, but these are just donations to help move the project, its pretty unreasonable for you to expect people to go all into the project in its current state. You can pretty much blame all the kickscammers and failed indie projects, that have been turning up asking for payment as if it was early access, promising that the game will be made on just that purchase alone, only to end up in development hell and then having to basically come up with excuses, all the way until the devs finally decide to hell with it and cancel the project altogether, but none of the people that did that early access purchase were reimbursed, and this is why in the end these people were scammed, and its why nobody will trust a dev's words anymore.

It is also the reason why a lot of gacha games are failing as well, because a lot of companies have been wanting to cash into the current gacha trend, since it has proven to be very lucrative for some big names out there, but then because of their poor planning and bad decisions, they lose the interest of the playerbase and cannot keep up with the demands, and then when people quit the game and the devs have no real way to bring them back, they fail to meet the expectations of the investors or publishers, and then the game is declared a failure and shortly after that the end of service gets announced, but none of the players that were playing daily and investing a lot of time and cash into the game, are ever compensated properly since some companies do not even make an offline version of the game, and even if an offline version does get made then all progress linked to that player’s account is lost, so its like what was the point of all that time and money invested into playing it.

This is the current state of the gaming industry, because of many rotten apples, the rest of the bushel goes bad, as by the time you have been identified even though you were a good apple, you have already spoiled thus they mistake you as a bad apple as well. My only recommendation is to continue proving that you can overcome these obstacles, and hopefully people will take notice and decide to support you, as nothing can be done in regards to people’s skepticism.
