The Future of Among Us

Hey everyone, PuffballsUnited here! It’s been a very exciting time for us the past few months! We’ve absolutely loved seeing everyone enjoying Among Us! Forte has been working hard to get the servers adjusted to deal with the huge influx of players. Thank you so much for bearing with us through these growing pains. Hopefully we can get started on new content soon! Speaking of new content…

Us devs have had several long discussions about what we want to do with the game. When do we stop working on Among Us 1? What content goes into Among Us 2? The main reason we are shooting for a sequel is because the codebase of Among Us 1 is so outdated and not built to support adding so much new content. However, seeing how many people are enjoying Among Us 1 really makes us want to be able to support the game and take it to the next level. We have decided to cancel Among Us 2 and instead put all our focus into improving Among Us 1. All of the content we had planned for Among Us 2 will instead go into Among Us 1. This is probably the more difficult choice because it means going deep into the core code of the game and reworking several parts of it. We have lots of things planned and we’re excited to bring new content to everyone as you continue to enjoy playing!

Here’s some things that are coming on the horizon:

* Servers. Forte is still working very hard to figure out our server issues. We don’t have an ETA but things should hopefully be getting better and better. This is taking up all development time on his end.

* Colorblind support. It’s something we’ve put off for way too long… We plan on adding other identifiers for players as well as certain color focused tasks (Like wires). This should also open the potential for more colors. In the past we couldn’t add more colors because it became too difficult to tell players apart.

* Friends/Account System. This is something we’ve wanted to do for a long time but just haven’t been able to tackle. For the health of the game going forward we’re going to sink our teeth in and figure it out! This one will definitely take some time.

* A new stage! It is still very early and we have only just begun designing the layout. The theme has been settled on though! The next stage in Among Us is going to be a Henry Stickmin themed location!

We have LOTS of other things planned too, we just need to prioritize and organize all our plans. Stay tuned!

As a software engineer, this is a bad decision, i'd much rather prefer you making a new game from ground up rather than building upon old stuff, i'm sure people would gladly pay for among us 2.

You won't be able to extend and iterate fast over the new game if you build it on top of legacy code, it rarely works, especially when you're a small team.

(+4)

Couldn't agree more, as a Software Tester in a Company of about 20 employees. Having tested my fair share of updated legacy modules, they are always full of bugs, and you spend years trying to polish them to perfect. When a simpler solution is to sunset the old version and dedicate the time to a full rebuild. The new build version is always vastly better than the original and gives far more scope for improvement and additions.

agreed, its so hard to look through code and figure out what needs changed. Starting from scratch is way less frustrating for one, and allows you to build the framework you want

Among us 2 is cancled.. They are moving all the updates into among us 1 and they are searching deep to the core into updating the code.. But hey free updates am i right pal?

(+1)

one and really important thing you need to add,

Voice Chat, yes Voice chat, they typing thing is so boring and you can see most people play it using discord, and the idea of telling everyone that i wanna play with to download discord so we can play, is too much and people will feel like “uh it takes time”.. Voice chat is so important, the typing is boring and make the game so slow, not exciting at all.

Thank you, and i really love your game.

also I’m an arab, and i really wanna play it with my friends, and typing in english for them it’s hard.. so i feel like a voice chat option would be great, also you can see the most streamers play it with a voice chat, it make the game so cool and take it to another level of excitement.

people will feel like “uh it takes time”
1) Clicks download discord
2) Clicks server
3) Joins voice
(Takes 30 seconds to get and join discord vs the amount of time implementing VOIP into the game... Also VOIP in game gives rise to trolls)

the easy it to get, the more people gonna play it, also i said that my mother tongue language is arabic, which is considered “hard” to us to do all that.

Also it’s not 30 sec.. cause people gonna register, and then check the app cause not everyone familiar with the discord app, at the end, I didn’t ask for much, voice chat is an important thing, cause this game need communication.

also it’s an Option, you don’t want it ? Turn it off, it’s fine.

I agree with @RedRawJam. There are a ton of free and cheap voice and video meeting options that you can use to play Among US alongside.

There should be both Voice Chat and Text Chat.

I would hate to see them waste their time adding this to legacy code when there are other ways this can be accomplished.

But maybe not. Maybe it is worth it.

young kids.. are you sure? Lmao.

(+1)(-1)

I hope for in game communication for the impostor

Wouldn't work in 1 impostor games. Actually wouldn't work at all. Because the impostors can speak to each other and can't move when chatting. Sus may result.

I would suggest a crewmate comms. But they can use it to figure out the impostors.

(+1)

Please add these features:

-peer to peer (I find the server/matchmaking unreliable)

-VOIP for when voting rounds

-VOIP for ghosts to chat to eachother

-2 minute wait before you can quit(stops imposter server hoppers)

-map making software would be awesome for the community to create more maps)

-Language filter( Whats the point in playing with people who don't speak the same language?)

i 100% agree with the workshop thing to make more maps, and as for the language there should be an option to translate messages automatically while also showing what they were translated from

(1 edit)

"The next stage in Among Us is going to be a Henry Stickmin themed location!"

I can think of a few ideas of where the location might be... And it might be a hunch!

-Toppat Space Station (Already Launched into space, orbiting around the globe)

-Toppat Clan Compound (Dogobogo Jungle, preparations for launch; huge map?)

-Toppat Clan Airship

-Government's Dogobogo Jungle Camp (Seen in Toppat 4 Life Path)

However, this might suggest that the MIRA might exist in the same universe as The Henry Stickmin Collection...

Edit: fixed spelling mistakes

The Wall could be another Henry Stickmin map that they could add in

I am screaming with excitement for a Henry Stickmin stage

so this may  help

a popular girl named jihyo from twice played your game recently with her fans and thousands of people downloaded it and started playing it

its free advertising for u but try to do a collab With them

And what part of that actually mentioned who they are?

You do know that many Youtubers were the ones who made this game popular.

CallMeKevin, RTgame, DangerouslyFunny, Blitz

and there are even more out there, but i don't watch those channels.

oh yeah dont forget xqc

sodapoppin started playing after seeing less viewed twitch streams play it, and according to things ive read it became popular after that, then pewdiepie and xqc and jacksepticeye and my favorite callmekevin and everyone started playing it

(+2)(-1)

Here's some Suggestions By Me!

1. Imposter Roles

So im thinking that there can be other Imposter roles. Like "Zombie". As the Zombie role you can "bite" other players while in meetings or in the map. The Zombie only infects others as the role spreads! The Joke: The Joke's Main Objective is to Get Voted off. If succeeded then Automatic win. (Only 1 Joke per round) The Assassin: The Assassin's role is to Eliminate their "Target". The Assassin keeps getting Imposter Abilitys (unlike other roles) as The Assassin Kills More Players. The Vengeful Man: The Vengeful Man (TVM) is like the Imposter but a ghost. TVM's abilitys awaken when he is dead. But! he cant kill. He can only Blind,Restart Tasks once, Possess for 5 seconds with 20 sec cooldown. Btw None of Imposter roles can see Imposter so that theres no ratting out. (only Assassin knows)

2.Crewmate  Roles

The Cure- Every Meeting the Cure can "cure" a Zombie (above for more details) only once. Cured Zombies turn back into Normal Crewmates unless Imposter. So! That its not only your a Crewmate.(only 2 minumum)

Saver- The Saver can deactivate any role. The trick is that everytime The Saver deactivates a role. It randomly has a increasing 10 percent to randomly kill you.(onl 1 min)

The Dead Man? -The Dead Man (TDM) is not actually dead. But! instead can talk to dead. The Dead Man however the dead cannot Say who was the Imposter. TDM can jump in vents but has a time limit for it of 10 seconds.

3. Abilitys

The imposter can place "Traps" these traps can Slow and shortly blind Crewmates and other roles for 6 seconds.BUT the slowness is for 20 seconds.(only has 2 traps per imposter if solo gets 4)

The crewmates can use a "Scared" button. The Scared button has 1 use. But! grants 2x speed but -1 sight for 10 seconds. So you better hurry! :)

The Imposter instead of instantly killing. The Imposter has to grab Scraps to make a Gun or a Knife. The Item you chose has Unlimited uses. But! has a 20 second cooldown every use. And! it takes 5 Scraps to make weapon. If your lucky. You dont need scraps! because theres a small 5 percent chance. You can get the alien kill!

The Crewmates can use a New ability. Work. Work has it own Power as it dosent affect tasks but its like a crafting bench for tools. Like to speed up Tasks or Make An new Ability recommened in chat!

Thats It i hope you liked it. Becuz i hav gud speling and BIG BRAINNNNNN

(this took 30 minuites) Yes i have no friends qwq

Wow. That's a lot of sugestions. If the devs add them, they will pprob dilute these ideas over the cousrse of maybe a few years

Wow! These are actually good. I hope they implement at least half of them

so you pretty much want the game to turn into town of salem?

These are such an exciting news, I wish to you all the best. :)

(+1)

Fix kick/ban not an option when dead. I was hosting and got spammed by nazis, but couldn't kick because I was dead. I had to exit and lost a lot of good players.

While it may be a dimension compatibility issue with my phone, but when 9 or 10 players are playing I also can't kick/ban because the button is over my text box and would always open my keyboard.

Online games should have a better moderation support than this. Playing online left a sour experience with me and I only play private with friends now because of it. I don't feel comfortable recommending the game anymore. Please fix this.

This is a serious issue.

(+1)

That's pretty much what the account system covers.

(3 edits)

How exactly it covers? I'm not saying the account system is bad idea, I'm only uncertain how it applies here. I was pretty clear on the issue, ie, not being able to ban. At the time of playing accounts not been implemented which is why I bring it up as an example of consequence. I had to quit out of a game (and thus) lost all my players. A game forcing you to repeatedly stop playing in order to have a "good experience" alone (regardless of extra consequences) is a bad game imho.

The issue of the dimensions is still a problem to me, albeit not one of as much importance. Compatibility ought to have been thought of, at least some sort of aspect ratio or something, but I can see it as a responsibility I have the ability to work around (ie getting desktop version), whereas the first example I do not.

As I said above, online games, doubly so ones with open chat, need to have better moderation support than this. It should have been one of the first things they had thought of. To think that everyone playing the game would be angels or that everyone playing wouldn't mind seeing some of the most hateful words in language is naive at best. Whether bad design or glitch, a problem is still a problem that needs to be addressed better than being able to have "friends" or "just play private".

I guess I wasn't being specific as to where it applies/covers.

The last paragraph regarding, "Online games should have a better moderation support than this." is pretty much what is intended with the account system. At the same time it will also be tricky too, because they'd still need to figure out a way to review the matches people had for them to see what happened,  what offenses were made, and then decide what form of punishment is suitable for said offense.

Then to add on to that, the account system allows for adding of friends, basically if you meet good people like you mentioned, you can add them so if you guys need to change lobbies it's easier to find each other.  The game is mostly aimed at people playing with friends rather than randoms. Even though majority would still end up in random public lobbies. That's pretty much the risk you're just going to have to bare with until this account system gets implemented and tools for moderation are added to it as well. And I'm really happy they are working on it as well. Now that they have the Henry Stickmin game out of the way and pretty much abandoned other game ideas to fully give it their all to get Among Us to where they'd love it to be. I believe there's still hope to resolve these issues. And I look forward to seeing what happens next.

Now regarding the fix for ban/kick mid-game. It can easily be abused if the host can perform this action any time during the game, I don't know if you took this to consideration. BUT if you are playing with friends and there's people who are being an issue it only requires 3 people to kick unwanted people mid-game during a meeting. These features were added specifically for these kind of issues. But I understand being a ghost this isn't possible. So it's best to get them out while you're alive.

Another thing you probably never knew as to why account system nor in-game moderation was never an idea was due to  the fact that initially Among us was never designed to be an online game, only a local game to played with friends in real life. So there was no need for these to begin with. But, down the line things changed (for the better) and online support was added for people to play with other people around the world. By the time they got this far, and due to how small the player base was, again this wasn't that big of an issue compared to what it is now.

So yeah a lot of you new Among Us players aren't really aware of the history of this game and as to why it is the way it is right now. It's totally understandable. And hopefully you can also see things from the developers side as to how they ended up with what we have in the game right now. Things have changed so much and so fast especially after how the player-base/community had be stagnant for so long. I expect it to be some what overwhelming, especially since they only have 1 developer that works on the back end of the game (coding/programing). There's a lot on their plate right now. And I totally understand the issues you and many many other fans are having. It's very much relatable.

(1 edit) (+1)(-9)

I have a couple suggestions for Among Us. I hope this reaches the devs.

1. Knockdown: Maybe occasionally, instead of dying by imposter, you get knocked down (or... something...) you basically are lying there, and cannot move, cannot do anything, and have a certain amount of time to be rescued. People can rescue you and carry you to the medbay (and put you on a bed or something. I basically just suggested a proper use for the medbay rather than just a location for a task or two) to revive, then after a certain amount of time, you revive, and maybe you have info on the imposter. To make these types valuable, it's rare for this to happen. Whoever is carrying the body gets their movement halved. Due to to this low speed, the death time would maybe be 1 - 3 minutes. (you choose, I'd be lucky if this idea even gets suggested)

(+6)(-1)

This idea is really bad, because it kills the purpose of trying to deduct who's a killer. Everyone will believe a person who almost died about the impostor

you may want to see the replies I just wrote.

(+1)

The Ides isnt that bad though. But i would add that Imposters can get Purposely knocked to play more "Mind Games"

Maybe.. That neutralizes the coment Amaimono had said.  The imposter can lie and say he THOUGHT (pairs with my other response to Tropix) he saw Yellow do it or something. Then he may get away with killing an inno!

wait, after the player gets revived, they now know who the impostor is right? or is the impostor shaded (a shadow) during knockdown animation and they cant see the impostor when they're knocked down, they can then see 2 mins after revive

Maybe. You need to be paying close attention. The imposter could be shaded. If you are doing a task, u usually won't see the imposter. Maybe colours are shaded out and hats and pets not exist while you are in a task. The idea I made would be paired really well with first person, (or only seeing the people in a cone shaped area in front of you, so like a FOV) but yes, the imposter could be shaded. Maybe hats can be disfigured, so it would be a deduction: Who wears hats?

The imposter would probably be known beforehand. Plus, this "knockdown" would be rare.

The point is so, there is a slight chance that the imposter will be revealed for every kill. This is only like 3-5% chance.

Plus, devs can add or take from this idea. Many ideas could be made, then some changed a bit then used. If the devs want to use the medbay or something, they would scrap the rest. Maybe they would change an aspect of my idea. In the end it's up to them. Add percent, add idea on to my idea.... Anything. I just want to make the game better, and in my eyes, giving the medbay a use AND having a surviving imposter system is 2 in one!

This would be best with long or medium range kills, when the lights are out

(+5)

Just a suggestion that might be relatively 'simple' to do but that could extend high-level play a lot and make 3 imposter games with 10 viable:

Add an option for 'Blind Imposters' where imposters are not informed who other imposter(s) are, and are then also able to kill other imposters.

This means imposters will also have some guesswork to do  in order to avoid killing their teammates, and crew members can no longer assume that slain players were crew members.

I'm excited for the future of Among Us!

Thank you for the continued support on the game.

Take care!

(+3)(-1)

We just want to be able to change map and players in the lobby

(+2)(-5)

You should be able to access the map each discussion. If a meeting has been called and someone died before that time, their body doesn’t get shown on the map. If a body is reported then only that body will show on the map, this could help new players.

(+3)

If the imposter did self report, they may want to change the story up a little bit. Therefore, this idea may have a few downsides. It does sound like a good idea though!.

what about instead of being teleported to the cafeteria around the button, teleport everyone around the body?

(+6)(-1)

I would love for you guys to increase the lobby size and having a 15-20 lobby :D

(+3)

I think they're planning on adding support for around 15 which will be pretty fun ☺️

(They were going to add that to Among Us 2 but now these ideas are going to Among Us 1)

(+1)(-7)

i would love custom skins

(+8)

Then people would make them inappropriate?

people do this for other games anyways. Just kick or report them

Maybe if InnerSloth had a team that approves them. Like how Roblox has a team that moderates every image you upload.

(+3)

Amazing ideas so far, you should definitely add a map editor and some more keybinds too!
