Goodbye Eternity's future

Hi everyone, I hope you're all doing well. I trust you've been enjoying the latest update.

Today, I wish to share some news regarding the future of Goodbye Eternity. Due to a decline in sales revenue on Itch.io, the inability to launch the game on Steam due to a ban, and rampant piracy of the game, I find myself in a difficult situation.

In order to continue developing the game conscientiously, some tough decisions will need to be made. This is so that everyone can enjoy the game right through to the end of the story—which, I assure you, isn't coming any time soon.

In light of these developments, I would like to give you a glimpse behind the scenes and share some figures from the analytics we set up after the latest update, in case you missed them.

For instance, if I asked you what percentage of the 70,000 copies of the game were pirated, what would your guess be? 40%? 50%? The highest guess I received was 60%... All these numbers significantly underestimate the reality; the actual figure is around 93%.

Yes, you heard correctly: 93% of the copies of the game were obtained illegally. While I am glad the game is so popular, it deeply saddens me that the financial viability of the project rests on the shoulders of the remaining 7% who support the game on Patreon, Itch.io, SubscribeStar, and Boosty.

From the bottom of my heart, thank you to all of you who support this project.

It was also decided that version 0.7.9 would be the last one to be offered free of charge. The intention behind this move is to present a demo version of the game, allowing people to familiarize themselves with the content before deciding whether or not to purchase the full version. I believe that 0.7.9, which encompasses several hours of gameplay, should suffice for players to make an informed decision.

I understand that many of you might be deceived by this news, but it's an unfortunate but necessary step towards ensuring the sustainability of this project. It's crucial to remember that creating a game is not only a time-intensive process, but also requires a substantial financial investment. To ensure that we can continue developing and improving Goodbye Eternity, we must strike a balance between offering free content and securing the financial support necessary to keep the project alive.

Of course, our decision does not mean we will stop appreciating the goodwill and dedication of our player community. In fact, we are exploring ways to reward those of you who have shown continued support throughout this journey. We also commit to maintaining the quality and richness of content for future updates, ensuring that the game remains worth your time and investment.

Lastly, we want to remind you that your feedback remains invaluable to us. We invite you to continue sharing your thoughts and suggestions as we navigate this new phase in the game's evolution.

Another important point that arose from the data is that the Android version of the game is the most played. However, it also poses a challenge as it requires the most resources. For instance, not everyone living in Brazil owns a PC or the latest smartphone, which makes the game inaccessible to some potential players.

Therefore, Selenyhr and I are now considering the future of the game and the direction it will take. The goal is not to earn more money, but to sustain this project and all future ones.

Please feel free to ask any questions you may have, and I'll be glad to answer them.

P.S: The release of version 0.8 remains unaffected by these changes, and we're still on track to launch this update in the autumn, as planned.

I just wanted to say i love your game and all your doing and fully have my support :) keep up the good work! Your hard work isnt going unnoticed

I know that Steam is a delicate tricky subject and I am also not an expert on the subject but I have heard that many games that were banned on Steam nevertheless entered GOG. Usually on GOG it works by separating the game from the main "content" in a free patch similar to how Kagura Games does as well. I hope the piracy situation eases up. Your game is one of the best purchases on this platform, you are an artist.

Since you're coming forward with this I would be interested to know how much does this development cost? Why did you get banned on steam? Why not make another account is it against ToS? Last of sales figures I get for the most part but how does pirated copies get numbers?

(+1)(-7)

It's difficult to get adult games to be accepted by Steam

(+11)(-1)

No, it's really not. Steam is flooded with H-games. You also aren't who I want an answer from.

This guy makes $14,000 A MONTH from PATREON ALONE and he's complaining about pirates. He has absolutely no reason to finish the game because of the insane income and it shows in how much effort he's putting into the game vs. running analytics and acting like a victim.

(+3)

Yeah, I already checked stats on Graphtreon now. He didn't answer any of my inquires here as you can see and however he answered someone else asking about how they know sales vs pirated copies with a smug non-answer. I'd express my disdain in more but I'd rather the comment stay up.

(+1)

Man that is awful to hear. I didn't realize people were so desperate to pirate indie games, but I guess that's also the nature of this genre. Hope some good luck comes your way or you can find some way to fight piracy. Until then though I'm happy to keep supporting.

(+2)

Translated from 59lands's comment since I agree that it might be a wayout.

You can try to release an All-age version without any adult content on Steam, and put a patch here so people can download and install to the All-age version in order to unlock the adult content.

This method has been used on steam already by Kagura Games.

也许你可以尝试在steam发布一个全年龄的本体,然后在互联网上发布成人的补丁(就像galgame一样),或许可以通过steam的审核?

(+6)(-22)

The 7% wouldn't exist without the 93%. Piracy means your games are popular; don't treat it as lost sales because it's not.

(+3)(-4)

I'm not treating the 93% as failed sales, I know that the majority of people pirate because they can't afford to buy the game.

(+6)(-1)

No, there are also some who suffer from special circumstances, and it is difficult to buy, and usually they need to use purchasing agent, such as China. I like your game very much, I think such a male protagonist is very manly and responsible, I like this game, this is the only game I bought at ITCH, even if I used purchasing agent, it cost 2 dollars more. I don't regret it, it's worth and I hope to see the follow-up and ending of this game! Love you~Hope you stick to it!(my English is not good)

(+3)(-6)

That is the dumbest thing I've read all week lol They literally give out a free and well updated version of the game. People that are greedy enough to want more but refuse to pay for it clearly don't care about the game and aren't doing anything positive for it. Maybe your comment would mean something if the percentage wasn't nearly as drastic as 93%. And as someone in the 7%, those losers sure as f**k aren't the reason I found and decided to buy the game almost a year ago now.

(+3)(-1)

The tone of the recent posts is pretty negative. Which makes sense. I hope the creator will recover from all of this. I am a fan of the recent content and would like to see more. But I would say the process needs to be fun for them. That said, I think the high lvls of piracy also means the game is popular. With lower quality games I don't think a lot of people would be sharing it. So maybe that's a small silver lining. Also, I dont think steam is a perfect antidote against piracy either. I have noticed before that its pretty easy to copy a unity game from steams catalogue on your local machine and be perfectly able to run it solo...

Strange that Steam did not accept this game, as there are kinkier games sold there.

Anyway, the game looks promising and interesting but the main reason why I'm a bit wary about purchasing it is due to my fear of purchasing EA games due to them so often getting abandoned.

Wouldn't it be better if the game was a bit shorter but actually finished in the first place? So many indie devs try to bite far more that what they can chew and while the game in their mind might be absolutely gigantic (which would take like half a decade to complete at the very least) they hardly ever have the strength to do so especially when its a really small group or (gasp) a single dev job.

If the game had an actual satisfactory conclusion but one that could be potentially continued with the same cast or cast related to the ones that appear in this game (or a spin off that happens in the same universe) then it would build some trust for the dev as one who actually finishes his games and not yet another dev who abandons the project midway.

Shorter but completed> Longer but forever unfinished IMO.

From the little that I know about game development, the developer either makes it on their own, and doesn't release it until the game is finished, or releases it in parts so as to make sure people actually like the game. The fact that they've started the development process, and have a relatively bug free and quality looking game tells me that they most likely already have a story created, and are now just implementing it.  Also if you've noticed, all the locations generally act the same way, with a certain number of hidden goodies, and a background. That looks and sounds pretty copy paste to me, which is good, because it means more to to work on the animations and story the creator(s) want to tell.

I get what you're saying, but the way they're releasing the updates in parts with little bits of each character is almost what your saying with spin-offs and other games in the same universe, but then they'd need to re-create either a new setting/environment, either from scratch, or copy-pasted from the current game, and at that point, why bother if it's copy pasted, might as well just build on what you have.

I like to think of game development as building a tower with blocks or Lego.  If you build the tower too narrow, it'll never be supported and will simply fall over(rushing to finish).  This also creates the base of your Lego build(video game), and allows you to start building upwards safely. If you've built with Lego, you rarely build vertically right away, rather you build upwards in a layered fashion, or after building a strong foundation. This allows the bricks to connect in a sturdy manner(debugging) for when you add the next layer(more content).  I also understand them working on 1 character at a time, as it allows the story to be more meaningful, less rushed, and makes debugging the code easier.

I also can't wait for the project to be finished, but if the developer is having financial issues due to piracy or some other inconvenience, how will they pay for their home? Family? Or even electricity which is needed to create said video game?  Their options are to either monetize the game, get enough support through donations sites, or to work irl on top of developing the game, which is the worst case scenario, as they'll have little to no time to work on said game depending on the demands of their job and how much they're paid.

To RNGeusEX,

We appreciate all the work you and your team are putting into the game.  I personally will stick with you until this game is hopefully completed, and hope you're able to recover from your financial situation.

Love this game, always have, always will, bought it as soon as I could. Hope everything pans out!

(+2)

This is one of the few eroge game that I bought cuz the quality is really good, I really hope the project will continue  after the 0.8 cuz this is a really good game rather it's the story or the quality of the art, I cannot support much more than sending my respect and my belief in this project, I hope the team will  be able to earn more fund for this amazing game, I hope the best for the ppl working behind it and the game !

(+2)

this sucks, and i dont know what else to say other than i support the project and believe in your success 🙏 this game is worth way more than $10

(+2)

That's a bummer man, I haven't played the game yet (was waiting for full release), but I still bought it cause I could immediately tell you were putting a lot of effort into it.

I know steam can be a huge boon to revenue and support. Is there no way to appeal? Why would they ban the game in the first place?

(+2)

RNG laid out a really good appeal and they just auto-denied immediately. it's ridiculous.

Because Steam only accepts abandoned, trashy, money grab eroges. That's it. This was not part of that criteria.

(+8)

regarding the insane ratio of piracy, I don't suppose you have data on where exactly the game's pirated from, do you? Knowing the adult games space like I do, I highly, highly doubt that people are searching for your game specifically with the intent to circumvent the financial support. It's just people browsing sites dedicated to mass-posting adult content and your latest updates are being thrown in with the rest of the hodge podge. That 93% is a testament to how many people are consuming adult media in that free, grab bag fashion rather than how many people are avoiding paying for Goodby Eternity specifically. Idk if that exactly lifts your spirits, but if it's any consolation, I found this game via one of those sites and I've just been waiting for the full release before buying (but I'll pick it up today in light of this post).

(+1)(-9)

I blame F95 Zone since its one of the biggest websites that shares illegal copies of these kind of games.

(+8)(-1)

still a goated website

(-10)

for poor and toxic people, yes.

(+8)

Have yet to see a toxic person on there, and I'm proud to be poor!

(+2)

lol

(+1)(-2)

Honestly when I read your patreon and it said  the game free for everyone I thought that meant when the game is fully complete it would be free should I play one demo then I decided to wait until the game complete

As someone who first pirates games and when i love them buy them... I agree with you about it being fustrating and there has not been a single developer in this industry who has not complained about piracy. They either fought futile against it followed by them plainly giving up on their project. Please don't let is drag you down, the glass is half full, focus on the 7% and i hope with you it increases.

As a person living in today's economy... as much as i would love to i can not support every single game with the female domination genre. I tend to support games which are really showing promise and promise with me is build on 3 pillars in the following order: Stability, Story/Writing and Art/Images/Animations.

While the 2 last are obvious on why it is a pillar, the first most important is project stability and that is mainly about you. I need to see and know you are stable (steady updates, news, mental health, ...) and live by what you say (principles) aka keeping your promises. You have been doing amazing so far, thank you. I'm glad i still got an eye for good developers like you who i deeply support.

As a long time female domination project follower and gamer i can tell you posts like this will maybe increase your stats to +/- 9% which isn't much. Here is some advice if you want to lower piracy but keep in mind even this is not bullet proof but definately will help you increase your $ numbers. The point is to make it harder to pirate, let 'em sweat a bit. Link the game to the network (online) and make it so that it can only work with internet connection. Make unique codes for every sell from now on while also sending unique codes to everyone in your database who bought the game already. Link that code to the game database for access. Keep building on that based on how people pirate your game, you will see it popping up on pirate sites with manuals so see how they do it and build a countermeasure against it, rinse and repeat to keep it difficult to pirate. Handling piracy is like working in the garden, if you don't want the weeds you can't just wish it gone, you got to put in the time and effort to keep it low.

Ps: The reason why i pirate the games first is because many put female domination in the mentioned genres while there is a girl only insulting a guy in a scene... Yea, i'm not paying 10 EUR for that. It seems female domination is something subjective depending where one lives. I don't know if this info can help you with promoting the game better to help people skip this stage and instantly invest in your game.

Edit: To be clear before i get shot, i bought this game close to release.

(+2)

Actually awful advice for an indie dev. The best piracy countermeasure for indie devs is simply offering good customer support and ease of use for paying customers. The only anti-piracy measures shown to work for a time are denuvo but it costs hundreds of thousands to millions depending on the expected sales of a game.

Idk ive seen that advice work for a few games i follow...

(+3)

I hate always online bs in video games. These anti piracy measures only hurt legitimate buyers in the long run. Ex. I play on a tablet that I take places where i dont have reliable internet.

(+1)

As someone who bought the game (366 days ago apparently) I love the art, the writing, the story and the transparency you have provided as a team.  It saddens me to hear this news.  I will make sure to help support and either look into Patreon or just buy the game again on itch again.

Keep up the great work

- Big Fan.

wait i'm a bit confused, so the 10$ price tag for the game will not include updates after 0.7.9 as in the updates after that will be paid for to unlock it (like that in mcsm where u pay for each chapter of the story)?

(+6)(-1)

No, you're mixing everything up. People who bought the game will always benefit from updates.

It's the people who didn't buy the game who will be stuck at 0.7.9.

(+1)(-1)

oh alr mb lol

(+2)

I will say, I did initially try the free part of the game first, but once I saw I enjoyed it, I happily purchased it for $10.

(+2)(-1)

It may be sad that the lack of financial support for this game is low and could affect it’s future but people will always turn to a place that benefits them more even if that’s saving as little as $1. I am no exception either, I pirate many thing from movies to games to artwork and many more but if I come across something I enjoy I will always try to support the creator in some way. I have pirated your game before and really enjoyed it so I bought the full version because I enjoyed your work but don’t get me wrong if I didn’t enjoy it then I would not waste my money on garbage, that goes with everything that’s my humble opinion.
