The Future of Among Us

Hey everyone, PuffballsUnited here! It’s been a very exciting time for us the past few months! We’ve absolutely loved seeing everyone enjoying Among Us! Forte has been working hard to get the servers adjusted to deal with the huge influx of players. Thank you so much for bearing with us through these growing pains. Hopefully we can get started on new content soon! Speaking of new content…

Us devs have had several long discussions about what we want to do with the game. When do we stop working on Among Us 1? What content goes into Among Us 2? The main reason we are shooting for a sequel is because the codebase of Among Us 1 is so outdated and not built to support adding so much new content. However, seeing how many people are enjoying Among Us 1 really makes us want to be able to support the game and take it to the next level. We have decided to cancel Among Us 2 and instead put all our focus into improving Among Us 1. All of the content we had planned for Among Us 2 will instead go into Among Us 1. This is probably the more difficult choice because it means going deep into the core code of the game and reworking several parts of it. We have lots of things planned and we’re excited to bring new content to everyone as you continue to enjoy playing!

Here’s some things that are coming on the horizon:

* Servers. Forte is still working very hard to figure out our server issues. We don’t have an ETA but things should hopefully be getting better and better. This is taking up all development time on his end.

* Colorblind support. It’s something we’ve put off for way too long… We plan on adding other identifiers for players as well as certain color focused tasks (Like wires). This should also open the potential for more colors. In the past we couldn’t add more colors because it became too difficult to tell players apart.

* Friends/Account System. This is something we’ve wanted to do for a long time but just haven’t been able to tackle. For the health of the game going forward we’re going to sink our teeth in and figure it out! This one will definitely take some time.

* A new stage! It is still very early and we have only just begun designing the layout. The theme has been settled on though! The next stage in Among Us is going to be a Henry Stickmin themed location!

We have LOTS of other things planned too, we just need to prioritize and organize all our plans. Stay tuned!

Hopefully,  the updated version of Among Us will still run on older generation laptops/pc with OpenGL 2.1 (Intel 4500MHD graphics), a lot of people still use this type of laptops/PC.

(+3)

I hope so also. My laptop is from 2013. Intel i3, windows 8.1, with 1.9 GHz. Because when any game surpasses that, it plays as a potato.

(+3)(-14)

I hope its free cause im broke

(-5)

Why are people downvoting this when it's so relateable

(+1)(-3)

because why would you have a sequel free but not the first game?

(-1)

Imagine the downvoters getting upset about a FREE new game when the ORIGINAL is $5.

(+8)

I hope Among Us will be available on Linux devices soon.

I second this. Unity is cross platform so just export the project to to Linux and Mac.

personally, i have no linux device, but i would like to see more people being able to access among us.

(+6)

I hope Among Us gets ported on mac one day

Very good decision! I was actually holding back on buying the game because I wanted to wait for the 2nd more improved version. I can happily say, I have bought the game and have plenty of fun already! It's good to hear that the developers are more interested in what's best for the community rather then profit. :)

PS: Please don't implement an anti cheat that will destroy the experience for Linux users using Steam Play. This shouldn't be a problem with this type of game but please keep it in mind. ;)

(+2)

Woooow, what a move! Good on you! I was definitely sitting here looking forward to the clones and sequels after hearing how the code base has issues, but if y'all are going whole hog on this then I support that 100%! Super glad that this game took off for ya, and I hope the work proceeds smoothly and effectively!

(+4)(-2)

I would love to see achievements/statistics and leaderboards. For the leaderboards, could be as simple as getting points if you win (more points if you survive) and no points if you lose. Individual leaderboards for each public/private room (so temporary leaderboards) would be amazing!

Only problem is, some use bots. CallMeKevin made a video showing off an auto kill bot where all he had to do is press 0 and it would spam Q, the kill button.

(+5)(-1)

I really hope the new map has multiple floors like an upstairs and downstairs.

(+1)

How would that work in a 2d style game? Plus, it makes it so much easier for the imposter(s) to kill and not be seen.

If this is even going to happen, the kill cooldown has to be on max while the amount of tasks are on max.

nice!

(+5)

The game is pretty fun with friends. There are two things which would be nice to see implemented

Possibility of hosting a server (like the official servers, not P2P, or, if P2P being able to specify IPs manually, if other players are outside the LAN)

Linux build (shouldn't be that complicated, if needed i don't mind doing testing before releases on linux), if not possible PLEASE don't put an anticheat (or make it optional) that is incompatible with wine/proton (most client side anticheats are incompatible, just do some checks server side and it should be ok, i mean, one player shouldn't be able to go reactor to navigation in one second :D)

(i'm curious do devs even read these?)

(+3)

I agree on the linux build, they should just build a linux binary.

(+1)

lol this is unreal

(+1)(-3)

They should add an option to be able to create your own clothes, oh maps, an editor mode, but I still think that the decision they just made is very good.

(+3)(-1)

if you could make your own hats, you can make one that hides your color or a big ol' block as a hat to hide bodies. Basically, its really abusable.

people already hide their color with big hats and clothing, I hate it

(+1)

Very epic

(+2)(-4)

Please change the 30 FPS limit, i would love to play the game at 60+ FPS rather than being locked at 30! Thank you. :)

(+3)

Turn on Vsync

(+2)

Just turn on VSync

(-1)

I think that if it was higher than 60 the game would be in fast motion.

(+1)

That's not true MrKangaroo. There are easy workarounds now a days for that.

you living in the 90s or something? programs dont speed up with better fps

VSync exists bud

(+11)

Would be cool to have a Streamer mode. Where it hides the code and people can click on the hidden one to copy to clipboard (if its possible in Unity, I bet it does)

(+2)

Are you guys planning on reworking some of the currently existing maps? I feel like a few of them could use a couple of design/layout tweaks (especially Mira imo)

Really glad you guys are listening to the community, keep up the good work!!

(+5)

Will you guys let us host our own servers? I'm sure plenty of people would be glad to host servers for you guys. I definitely would be.

(-5)

Among Us is P2P I think

Here’s some things that are coming on the horizon:

* Servers. Forte is still working very hard to figure out our server issues. We don’t have an ETA but things should hopefully be getting better and better. This is taking up all development time on his end.

Literally the first bullet point in this devlog, what?

inside a LAN yes

(+1)

Uhhhhhh... No?

(-5)

r/technicallythetruth applies here. because the game IS 5 bucks, it kind of is P2P. But when talking about DLC, that's purely up to you now. Personally, i bought the mini crewmate bundle mainly because i wanted to support Innersloth a little more. (also because the crewmate is cute but that's not why i put it here.)

"In dedicated server games, there is a server set up to run the game. This server is not a player, and often runs a different version of the game software. It doesn't need a video card, it doesn't need the game assets that are only needed for rendering. With a dedicated server, all players connect to that server - this is called a "star" topology. The dedicated server runs the simulation. What the player's computer sends to the server is something like: "I am moving in this direction, I am facing this direction, and I am shooting". The server updates the simulation and informs all of the players of the new state of things."

"In Peer to Peer games, the players connect directly to each other. One player's computer (we'll say Player A) sends packets directly to the other player's computer (lets call them Players B and C). There are two common forms here - the game may have a dedicated host player that all the players will connect to (you get A-B and A-C). This is similar to how dedicated servers work. One player is both the server and a player. A second form of peer to peer game is when all players connect to each other, and there is no dedicated host player. This is called a "mesh". Everyone runs the logic and then try to negotiate with each other. It is usually something like "I am here, facing in this direction, moving in this direction, I am shooting, and my shots are doing damage to this enemy".

(-1)

Factually incorrect. The game literally cannot be pay to play because there are options that you have that bypass having to buy the game in the first place. Also, the definition of pay to play is the ability to purchase specific items that give you the upper-hand or an unfair advantage over those who do not buy said item. That said, there is currently nothing in Among Us that gives any kind of advantage to anyone. Everything in the game that can be bought is either to remove ads (for mobile players) or purely cosmetic.

(+1)

wrong, on LAN maybe, but worldwide... don't make me laugh, p2p means everyone connects to each other, and if one of us were to lag out on p2p, we'd all lag behind with them, and again, literally the first bullet point

(+2)

I think they should make the servers open source sooner though, since they’re having so many issues with them. Don’t have to pay for more servers if you just let the community host servers.

(+1)

actually, ithey said they'll make the server source or game open sourc when they hit only 50 playing

(+1)

To be honest a great decision that you guys have taken into account. The love people have given to Among Us is incredible, which is a great step to continue with the game's development. Keep it up guys, thanks for the astounding hours of fun that you've gave to us.

What the hell is wrong with you?

Well I use .OEU, so take that!

+1 for this... i use WARS instead of WASD cuz i use colemak, and i gotta use the arrow keys which is a lil annoying when i gotta use the mouse too

(+3)

The cancellation of Among Us 2 i feel was a good choice, i feel focusing on Among Us 1 is a better option because it's one of those games that (when ready for) can just be updated over the years with new updates and is one of those games where a second does really suit it.
