Among Us 2

Hi everyone! Time for a big post!

First of all, thanks so much for playing and enjoying Among Us. It's been crazy to see how much more popular Among Us could be than we ever imagined.

Second of all, yes. We're confirming Among Us 2. This post is all about what that means and why we're doing it.

First and Most Important

Among Us 1 servers will stay alive for as long as it has enough players to start games. When we first started, we found that players couldn't really play when the servers had fewer than 30 - 50 players per hour. But lately we have 70,000 - 110,000 per hour. We'd be crazy to shut off the servers on you in 2021! And even if Among Us 2 gets lots of players, we'll just run both at the same time. If Among Us 1 servers shut down, I will open source the code so players can run servers instead.

But why a sequel?

Among Us 1 has been out over two years. It started as a tiny local-multiplayer-only game and has grown and grown and grown. Online multiplayer took 2 months and a total rework to make happen, then 6 months per extra map, and horrible server growing pains along the way. It really was not created to be this big. Because of this, it's extremely hard to add more things without breaking existing things. Frankly, it's terrifying to add in more things because the game is so fragile. Fixing this would require recreating core sections of Among Us, then making sure everything else still works on top. It's actually even harder than just making a new game.

So the first goal of Among Us 2 is to be made to withstand growth. We want to add to it at least as long as Among Us, but with fewer bugs along the way.

What will be in Among Us 2?

Well, first, we plan to basically include Among Us 1 in some capacity. Don't expect us to drag and drop all three maps directly over, but we think it's important to keep the simple play of Among Us with crewmates and impostors. But do expect some new options and balance tweaks. For example, we know very well that 3 impostor needs more than 10 players to be balanced, so 12-15 player games is a goal.

Second, we know that hide and seek is a very popular mode, but it is tough to find or exclude those games. Expect matchmaking to work very differently to better support custom modes and skill levels.

Also, we know that forming groups and making friends is tough. Accounts and friends will be in Among Us 2 straight out of the gate.

Better moderation: We know that hacking, bad behaviour, and toxic language is a problem in Among Us 1 and we definitely don't like it. But we never had the tools to really combat it effectively as a three person team, so expect Among Us 2 to launch with fewer hacks, a report button, moderators, etc.

But we've always known that the thing that would really make Among Us 2 unique from Among Us 1 is more roles. We aren't far enough in the design to confirm any roles or how they will work, but the primary addition for Among Us 2 is more complexity than just Crewmate vs Impostor. This should add a lot more replayability to the game and we're excited to see how we can shake things up for more advanced players.

We have a lot of other things we know players want to see, and a lot of surprises in store as well. So we definitely think Among Us 2 will be worthy sequel. That said, we want to get people playing it quickly, so we will probably start small in Early Access so we can grow Among Us 2 with player feedback. But the above is some of the key bare minimums before we launch at all.

Will it cost extra?

Yes, but.

We know a lot of players just started playing Among Us 1 which makes it look like we're quickly moving to a sequel, so we're going to try carry over some stuff from Among Us 1. We haven't confirmed that we can do any of this yet, but we might:

  • Launch with a discount coupon for Among Us 1 owners on Steam.
  • Keep Among Us 2 Mobile free but with (removable) ads.
  • Have free big content updates like maps and game modes. We're not making that mistake again.
  • Have in-game currency so we can break up big cosmetic bundles and let people buy/earn just the things they want.

When will it come out?

We really do not know at all. We just started planning. There is no art, programming or sound done at all. For the record Among Us took about 6 months to enter open beta (early access) and 6 more months to leave open beta. Among Us 2 will probably take at least as long to enter open beta, and will probably spend longer there.

Unlike Among Us 1, we expect to make Among Us 2 for PC first, then port to mobile. This will let us focus on making a great game faster because updates can come out in minutes on PC, where mobile can take hours or even days.

So basically

We're super hype to start Among Us 2. It'll take a while, but we'll make sure it's worth it. We hope you'll stick around to see what we can do.

Oh, also, we're launching merch on Friday August 21 at 12 PM (Noon, PST). Everything is on pre-order, but there will be shirts and a plush crewmate. The best places to hear when it launches are on Discord and our mailing list, but we'll do our best to get the word out.

Gran idea hombre!

This sounds amazing, but what price will Among Us 2 be? I'm only ten years old, and I don't have a paypal. I understand that higher prices may be required due to minimum gameplay during beta, but like I said I have a balance of $11 in cash so I can't support you financially, but I can support you by playing. What I'm asking is for you to possibly lower the prices as more people start to play. It's a classic supply and demand problem. Just a little side note, I had an essay on this kind of thing giving a whole explanation of supply and demand, which I believe you have too, by the experience you have with coding. I presume you've gone to primary, junior high, high school, and college, or are still attending college. My older sister works at Microsoft in Seattle as a coder, so I know a thing or two.

Thanks, ArtCantDraw by Krysti

If the price of Among Us 2 goes up compared to Among Us then the quantity demanded will go down but the demand for the game (and the supply) will stay the same. This means people will still want the game but less people will buy it overall. That's considering the demand for Among Us and Among Us 2 will be equal but personally I am excited for Among Us 2 and the new content it will bring. Very smart of you to bring supply and demand into this though. You should be an economist!

Thank you. I was thinking about that libe of work, as well. When my teacher asked what we wanted to be when grew up I answered with "an economist" and everyone just stared at me like I had an unreachable goal. Thank you for that suggestion overall, though.

The game will probably be free on mobile, and most popular games are free these days because they have tons of cosmetics to sell - among us does not have that many cosmetics. They need to get their money somehow.

If I didn't have any money like you, I would just get it on mobile when it comes out.

Also, you fucking idiot, don't lie about your age and then talk about shit obviously not in your age range. Ten year olds don't get essays. EVER. ANYWHERE.

Heh. Thought you were the dev and was about to thank you.

Not very much an essay but more a test about what we knew because we watched daily news in my class

It would be quite interesting if the imposter could hide the body of a dead man.

My idea is for the imposter to take the body to some pipe and throw the body inside. Because there is a body there, that pipe would be unusable until someone reports. The imposter would stay at -50% speed while carrying the body.

I ask that you consider this humble suggestion.

Sincerely, Pedro Cardoso (Brasília, Brazil)

I was thinking of that as well!

(+5)

Imagine Among us 2 on the switch! It would be easier to do that putting it on xbox or playstation because the switch has a touch screen.

(+3)

Hello Innersloth my child has been worried about his stuff not transfering into among us 2 he put 15 bucks on the game and he said he ll be sad if his stuff doesnt gets transfer into among us 2 so can you do this task because idk what child would like to waste 15 bucks on a game that is making a sequel and the first game dies down alot and everyone focuses on the sequel and theres 15 bucks down a hole so please make it so you can transfer your stuff into the second game please. Thanks for listening and have a great day :)

Will there be Among Us for mac?

(+5)

I think you should port the older maps if possible! Being able to play the old maps with the new roles would be fun. (also The Skeld would be silly, ridiculous fun with 15 players) Maybe a remaster/remake if it is possible!

(+4)

if you add more roles please add an option to enable/disable roles. I think that it makes it more fun and allows for a more exciting experience. also having a ban on certain names would be nice (ex. any sort of color, or any role name such as "traitor")

(-1)

One thing that would be cool would be if you could never tell when  the imposters were all gone.  This would fix a big problem in the game, the "ITS THEM! IF ITS NOT THEM, VOTE ME OUT!!!!!11!" problem. Being able to do that limits the imposter significantly. It would also encourage the completion of tasks, since that would be the only way to truly "Win"

(-1)

i would say make that an option when making a game. Allow to show imposter when killed or do not show imposter when killed> That would make it better for people who want a change and people who want to stick with the old game.

(+3)

So this option already exists! Its called "Confirm Ejects" and its in the settings in the dropship, if you have Confirm Ejects off it makes it so you don't know how many impostors are left or who is an impostor when they get ejected.

(+1)

That option was only added a week ago. Maybe this guy just hasn't played in a while.

Bro really?

You know, what if he decided to quit Among Us for a while, maybe he was bored or he just had something else important to do, and he saw this post about Among Us 2 before he opened the Among Us 1 game. Or maybe he just never hosts rooms so he didn't know about any of the new settings for hosting rooms, because I host rooms very rarely, so I didn't know about this feature too (And I haven't played it for like two weeks, but I have watched some letsplays, and I first found out about this new "Confirm Ejects" only yesterday).

(+2)

i think there is one, which is confirm ejects...

Just found out how to do that

No, Confirm ejects still ends the game when the impostors are gone. I'm talking "the only way to win is task win" type of thing.

(+4)

Awesome news! Keep it up you guys. I have one question, however. Are you able to, in any capacity, make Among Us 2 available for consoles? Among Us already has gameplay and UI that's perfect for consoles, and playing with parties on Xbox on mobile works flawlessly right now. Making the next game for all platforms would be incredible if you guys could do it. Thank you for all that you have done so far!

(+1)

That would be awesome as all of my friends play console, but the only issue with that would be the tasks, a lot of the tasks would only work on mobile and pc since it's click and drag, (such as wires), so console would require a total rework of the game or very simplified tasks, which would also make it unable to be cross platform unless among us 2 on pc and mobile also has those dumbed down tasks.

(+1)

But what if you could drag with the joystick?

What if you could use a cursor with the thumbstick (only when you are completing tasks though)?

(+1)

Just make them QTE on console.  The problem with the tasks isn't how you do them, it's that you do them at all.

eg the asteroids game, analog pad, one fire button. The leaves, analog and fire. The wires, press fire on the left side, then the right side. Swipe card, press fire to hold the card and then flip the analog pad.

These are suggestions mostly in the name of solving RNG issues.

To solve the "so and so is always impostor/so and so is never impostor" problem where someone can play all day and always or never be the impostor (eg the rng appears broken.) This requires minor changes.

First, when the players are in the "lobby", allow players to select "crew and impostor OK" toggles, this is only to allow people explicitly opt-out of being the impostor for the next game. It has to be set every round.

Second, allow playing the game with zero impostors as well. Basically, this mode is "players versus the ship", which happens when all players opt out of being the impostor. In this mode players can only lose by not completing all the tasks and having one of the typical sabotage items ending the game. The Sabotage items will be triggered roughly every 10% tasks completed or if any player hasn't done a task within 60 seconds.

Third, it would be preferable to randomly select impostors 0 to 3 when the impostors are not verified when people are voted off. This should also not reveal the other impostors to each other, which means they can also kill each other (unless "friendly fire" is turned off.

(-1)

You sound like one of the people that would quit a game because they are not an imposter

I've literately watched people play this game and get Impostor every time, while simultaneously having people complaining about it.

(+2)

The problem with "fixing RNG" is that it would no longer be TRULY random if you tried to make it fair

Indeed, but sometimes the RNG results in the same person getting the impostor every time. So this is more of a way to say "don't give me a straw" when the game draws straws for impostor. The other players don't see who's opted out.

There is a typo in first and most imporant. It should be It. Not I

(+1)

Know i know you've already confirmed it to be on PC and Mobile but i was wondering about counsel. See me and my friends don't have enough money to buy gaming PC and not even all of us have laptops. So i was wondering if you haven't already thought about it yet to try to bring it to counsel. I know that there are many more friends groups and players like us that cant play this just because we aren't on the right platforms. And Honestly i would love to play this game and i would easily spend money to get it and so would my friends. So i was just wondering i suppose if you were ever planning on bringing it to counsel. And if not could you look into it because i'm sure it will boost the player base even more and will let others like me play such an amazing game.

(+2)

Hey im not a big thinker when it comes to games like this but this could be a good change to the game or add something to it, which is, more rewards for after games, so for the innocent if they win they get like a random generated trophy and like they can have like a room for all there trophy and the trophies can have like some funny interesting names  for how the trophy looks, and if the impostor can have like the same feature as well but they would only be special for the impostor like if the innocent would like to get the trophy the impostor has, they would have to win as the impostor, so it makes a challenge and a challenge to win as the impostor, just something i thought of, if anyone wants to add anything or change anything u think might work with my idea, you can say but this is just my thought to help make this game more big than it already is :))

O, i just thought of this, if not trophy it could be random cool rewards for example, like a small t-rex statue, or a glowing orb, or something like a robot or even a stuffed animal, you know stuff that makes each match more enjoyable the next time u play.

(+1)

Yeah I feel like if they make a lot of features that can be contributed toward by the community (eg. The kill animations right now) where the community can design trophy's, skins etc. And post them on a "I'd like my trophy/kill animation to be added" page which makes them sign an agreement where they can't sue among us for using their art.

Oh also the discord server is full...

(+3)

I personally wouldn't mind buying Among Us 2 if it means supporting the developers. You guys make great content for people to enjoy.

(+3)

I had epiphany on how the broadcasting a stream without cheating can be done, and it's a bit more simple and obvious. Have the streamers run a second copy of the game that is in "spy mode" that hides the UI elements. So in "spy mode" it just clones the gamestate but removes the UI buttons and task list. This can also then be used with mobile users so they can play the game on a mobile device but someone else can stream them.

The only problem i see is that if they are an impostor, the stream will reveal them the second they kill anyone

(+1)

True, but the goal is remove the unintended cheating from shoulder-surf (or stream snipe) by watching everyone streaming the same game. As soon as someone dies, it does come back to "did you see who?" and the victim would already know who it was if they were watching carefully.

Especially from spectators to the stream. For the streamer, they can hide their twitch/youtube chat while they play so they're not tempted, but they can't keep people from watching multiple streams to sus out who the impostors are just by looking at the names on top of the characters or the voting screen. I was watching one set of twitch streams the other day, and it's like within a minute people in the other chat windows are already going "it's (other streamer)". So the idea here is to make sniping the stream unreliable.

Another way to accomplish the same thing, albeit requires a lot of effort on the part of the developer, would be to generate a "camera" and "microphone" output from the game and the streamer can then map their microphone through the game through discord or OBS or however way they want to stream it, and just send an alternate image/audio during the parts that would spoil the game. Like a greyscale mosaic over dead bodies. Creating a second copy of the game to run that just relays the info without the spoiler data is easier for streamers to understand IMO.

While I think the audio unintended cheating/self-spoiling is a problem, at least when you play with people you know, on twitch, that can be rectified by having someone controlling the mute buttons that's watching the stream but not participating.

It would take too much work and a "second copy" if the game running at the same time as the first would be A LOT harder than you think.

I get your reasoning, but there are probably other solutions to this problem. For example, if streamer mode is on names and colours are randomised each round. Or the streamers could just ban all colours and names of the streamers they are playing with from the text chat (stop people from saying anything about who it is)

(+1)

It requires less development effort to just relay the packets to a second client's IP address and have the second client turn the UI off.

(+1)

A battlepass like Bombergrounds could be a good idea. The only complaint I see among my friends, is that there is no reward system after matches.

Outside that it is a very popular system and in my opinion it works well. With free and paid levels.

(+2)(-1)

You should have TWO important things in mind...

1- Simplicity : you should make Among Us 2 players start simple and unlock new features with game play (basically don't throw in tons of game modes at once , show the player the core mechanics of Among Us 1 first then let them go)

2- Free to play , as a mobile player being able to play the game for free without paying anything is the only option (basically there should not be any features that affect gameplay that are locked behind a pay wall) , personally I can't support you directly but there are a lot of people who can by buying some of the cool skins or stuff like that.

Hope you make the game as soon as possible! It will be the greatest game ever!!!

There aren't any features locked behind a paywall, and they will need it to cost some amount of money on Steam until they have a reliable amount of skin designers. I think if they made a community tab where you could post your own skin ideas/designs, and posting on the community tab makes you sign an agreement where you can't sue among us (because you CHOSE to give them your design to support them), then they could make the game free and make people pay for skins. I guess it would be cool too if the person who made the skin gets it for free, and if you could only post a skin once every 14 days...

(+1)

If we already buy among us [ steam ] do we must buy the among us 2 again or free?

You'll have to buy Among Us 2 again, but you might get a coupon making it cheaper, according to the devlog :D
