PATREON TRIES TO KILL CK!

PATREON TRIES TO KILL CK!

So, for those of you who didn't know, Patreon has shut down my page and with it 90% of my income.

"But why?" I hear you ask, through the microphones I've secretly placed in your home. Is it because I violated the law, or engaged in depraved acts beyond all ethical boundaries? Did I push the limits of human decency too far? What vile and disgusting act could I have possibly committed that justifies having my game and my income destroyed?

I put Alice in the game.

Yes, that's it. Alice exists. Patreon's new policy is, and I quote: "We do not allow the presence of underage characters in Adult/18+ content." Which means no Alice, no Lil' Roxy and those kids of yours? Definitely not. The fact that none of them are sexualized in any way is irrelevant. They exist, therefore the game is no longer allowed on Patreon.

So the page is completely done, finished, gone forever?

Well... I've been told that if I wait two months I can remake the game completely and submit it to the Trust and Safety Team for review and possible acceptance as a brand new page and account. But the kids would have to be gone. Erased from the game and the lore completely. Chloe will no longer have a little sister, Lil' Roxy will be unmade, and all your kids will be erased from history. If I want to get back onto Patreon I have to eviscerate CK.

I won't do that. I refuse.

Patreon will keep drawing new lines, keep shifting the goalposts, keep trying to squeeze adult creators off their site until all that's left is a shiny, sterile, puritanical paradise. They don't want me to be a part of that and, frankly, neither do I.

I could try moving everyone over to SubScribestar, but that has traditionally not done well. Is it possible? Sure. Is it likely? Not very.

So what's the solution? A roll of the dice. A gamble.

I'm bringing Corrupted Kingdoms to Steam.

Now, Steam won't allow modded Koikatsu (the engine I'm using for renders) on its storefront, so that means I need to remake all of the graphical assets. This is going to alienate and irritate a lot of people, I know, but I don't see another path here. Without the Patreon income I only have a few months before my resources run out. Some people won't like the new graphical style, some won't ever read this and will think I abandoned the old version for a chance at a bigger profit on Steam, and some people simply don't like Corrupted Kingdoms.

The pitfalls are many. Steam may not allow the game on the store, or it may be review-bombed, or people may simply not buy it, to name just a few.

But I have to do it.

Is it a risk? Absolutely. But it's this or throwing Alice and the kids in the dumpster, and I won't do that. Not for any amount of money. Patreon will never be satisfied. So even if this bankrupts me, I'm finishing this story, and I'm finishing it right.

Certainty of death. Small chance of success. What are we waiting for?

Let's do this.

Man, that sucks. I really like this game, so I really hope you find a way.

(+1)

Thank you. No matter what, CK will continue!

Now, Steam won’t allow modded Koikatsu (the engine I’m using for renders) on its storefront, so that means I need to remake all of the graphical assets

Sounds like way too much work to me to be feasible. Anyway, I doubt that Steam is any better environment.

How about you create two versions? The full version and the Patreon version. You can still put your heart into the full version without sacrificing your ideas for strange American capitalistic sense of justice. Doesn’t matter if the Patreon version is strangely cut or rewritten (everybody 18+), it’s good if people can understand from the context that there has to be a full version. You just have to be careful to never mention the full version on Patreon or inside the game you upload there.

(+2)

That doesn't work, unfortunately. The dev of Twisted World has also had their page shut down, and that's because their game is hosted on a pirate site - something they have zero control over!

Patreon can and will track down all mention of your game and use it against you, especially if they think you're trying to circumvent their rules.

Yes, it's insane. Yes, this is the world we live in.

dont blame a whole country for a hand full of stuck up ignorant morons.

Pure onyx places monthly releases on itchio, each time they update a month, (or whenever enough content is out) they simply make a new post on their account, so they have october release for 5 dollars, november release for 5. you get what I mean. if you still want the game free and just make the new releases pay for, then go back to the other versions on your acount when you make a new release and make it free. this waym if anyone sees your game on itch, they can buy it. and on top of that you get put on the new/trending tab all the time here. put a donation in a discord, or make a subscription service on discord for roles, and that also can help if you wish, hell. I'm sure you can also give certain roles on discord early versions of the game if they dm you edit: (*makes cocksleeve fairy thats shortstack* silence. *makes nonsexualized kids* OH FUCK THATS GOTTA GO: ~patreon)

(+3)

It's certainly a possibility :) I'm currently holding out hope that SubscribeStar may get a large enough migration than I can simply return to business as usual, but if not then I'll definitely be looking into other avenues of revenue generation before finally deciding fully on Steam.

(+8)

would it be possible to build a website that sends the money right to you instead of relying on patreon? You could have a Corrupted Kingdoms official website, and then when someone buys the game, the money will be sent right to you.

(+2)

It's possible, but people are traditionally very hesitant to send money through unknown websites. It's something I'll be looking into setting up, though :)

(+1)

I just don't want anything bad to happen to this game. I've been following almost from the get-go and really enjoy it.

(+2)

Wow this really sucks dude, i really love what youre doing with the game and ill definitely be shifting to SubStar to continue supporting the project. But my one question is that i play this on mobile so if you transfer to steam will the mobile version just be put down or will you continue developing it on the side also?

(+1)

Thank you for the support! I really appreciate it!

I will almost certainly continue making CK in Ren'py, in which case Android builds will continue to be published as usual. Steam doesn't have a mobile games distribution channel, so I'll have to figure something out, but I will do my very best not to abandon Android players!

Of course, if enough people migrate to SubscribeStar then I can just carry on there as normal and all of this becomes moot :)

(+6)

I believe your gamble is doomed from the start.

Last I heard, Steam has the very same policy, that no characters under the age of 18 may be present under any circumstance in R+ games. I know that from another game, Goodbye Eternity which had to modify a non-sexualised under 18 side character into a +18 one to put the game on Steam. I also know that other games, to solve this issue, either give children in their games "miraculous growth" or just mention them without adding any depictions (at least not officially).

here

Quote for those who don't want to visit the link:

The origin of the Steam ban.
I thought the ban came from using the term high school and dating sim in the game which implied minors. I guess there is no such thing as an 18-year-old high school student. The other problem was Chiaki, it's a character that was deliberately underage but had no lewd content (which is perfectly normal).
Steam refuses any representation of a minor in an adult game, whether there is content about her or not. As long as Chiaki is 12 years old in the game, Steam will never accept the game. The good news is that even after a so-called ban, it's always possible to take the Steam validation exam by paying again the 100$ fee.

Soooo... Yeah, I don't think Steam will work.

(+4)

Check rule 3 in Rules and Guidelines/What you shouldn't publish on Steam

So, apparently, "appropriately labeled labelled and age-gated" in rule 3 means that they accept no exceptions and that all characters should be over 18... Which is kind of ironic since they accept lolis as long as the creators claim those characters are over 18.

Well, whatever you do, hope you make it work.

(+1)

I appreciate the good wishes and the warning, both. Steam unfortunately has a similar problem as other places, in that it depends greatly on which rep you get to review your game.

Sometimes you get one that bans Factorial Omega, and sometimes you get one that okays Summer Memories. That's where the gamble comes in.

Worst case scenario, I can strip the adult content out of CK and make it available as an off-site patch.

But best case scenario, SubscribeStar picks up and enough people migrate over there that I can continue as normal. Fingers crossed! :)

(1 edit)

Good luck with that! I'll keep in mind to see if I can spare something at the end of the month for the amazing story you're building. Though I must be honest, between taxes, food, alcohol and my addiction to books and printed text, I can't promise anything.

Sailors say "good wind and fair seas". How would that translate to development? "Good code and fair Steams"?

Yeah. Let's go with that. Good code, and fair Steams!

(+2)

That sucks dude. Go for it, and once I get the scratch together I'll see about getting it on Steam once it's done. Also I love the Lord of the Rings reference. Keep on keeping on, and I we will see what shakes out on the other side.

(+1)

Haha, I wondered how many people would get the reference! And thank you, it means a lot :)

(+2)

"People have sex and then kids are born?! That's crazy" - Patreon team probably. When I first saw the news on Discord I though it's because of teens or flat characters in general, which could be considered subset of lolicon. But I did not expect that.
I wish I could help, but I don't have any spare money, and even if I had I haven't figured how to pay for anything other than Steam games (it's complicated).
Hang in there!

(+1)

Yeah, their rules grow more vague and somehow more draconian with every passing month!

As for the support, don't worry about it - make sure you're taking care of yourself first and foremost! :) It's enough for me to know that people care about the game and enjoy it.

(+2)

Sadness, just pure sadness, i'm so sorry for what patreon has done to you, and at the same time, thank you so much for holding your ground. There are so much good NSFW game that NSFW is just an extra spice, and the game is awesome by themself, but people don't know and don't care. Same as people in the comment, if CK is out on Steam, I'll buy the game, it's a promise.

(+1)

Thanks for the kind words and for the moral support! It really means a lot to know that people care so much about CK! <3

(+2)

Will definitely buy & support the game when it hits steam! It is sad that the style will change but its well worth it if it ensures a steady income for continued development of a great game. I hope many others feel the same!

(+1)

Thank you, I really appreciate it! :) If enough people move across to SubscribeStar then I won't have to change the art style, but if not then I just hope people will be able to accept the changes and continue to enjoy CK!

(+1)

5 capítulos inolvidables de Futurama para celebrar la vuelta de la serie | SeriesI will support the project again, I will be with you from the beginning to the end.

(+1)

Thank you, I really do appreciate it a lot! :)

(+2)

When it's available on steam i will be buying it f**k patreon!! best of luck with getting the game setup for steam, i cant wait!

(+2)

Thank you, that means more than I can say! :)

(1 edit) (+2)(-1)

if and when you put it on steam i will 100% be buying it, good luck!

Thank you, that really means a lot! :)

(+4)(-1)

Wish you luck man, if you manage to get it on steam, you'll know that I will pay for it

Thank you, I really appreciate that! :)

(+2)

Good luck

Thanks! :)

(+3)

Why everyone hate NSFW content that much...

And yet x-ray shots of blowing someone's testicles apart in Sniper Elite is fine... :P

And Handholding too... Sl*ts...

(+3)

I'll be real honest here...

It's early, I'm just up, and I may have misread the title as 'Patrick tries to kill CK' and though it was a a Spongebob reference or something ^^;

Anyway,  you could try SubscribeStar Adult and/or something like Kofi just to keep the money flowing while you set up for steam. Even if you just post updates on the rebuild, the idea would be to provide an avenue for income.

I wish you all the best either way, CK is a truly amazing project :)

KoFi doesn't allow porn, sadly, and my Subscribestar page has been up for as long as my Patreon page. If enough people migrate then I'll be able to continue as normal, but if not then Steam is the only shot unfortunately.

Thanks for the kind words and support! Whatever happens, I'll figure something out, and CK will live on! :)

(1 edit) (+2)

Before you go too far remaking it for Steam, another dev was told they have the same policy (no children, even as side characters).  I can't remember which game it was though.  I wish you well, no matter what route you go :)

That was Factorial Omega, and the issue was that Steam thought the main female character (who is lewdable) looked underage :P

No, I'm thinking of another game, I'll try again to find it.  It's possible this other dev was misinformed though.

I found it, the game is Goodbye Eternity (which at the time was called Extra Life) by RNGeusEX.  The dev talks about it here:

https://the-end-of-time.itch.io/goodbye-eternity/devlog/367070/should-chiaki-bec...

I hadn't seen before, but apparently after all the work the dev put into it, he still wasn't able to get Steam to accept the game.  He talks about it here: https://the-end-of-time.itch.io/goodbye-eternity/devlog/453593/fresh-news

Hopefully you are able to get it to work, or even better SubscribeStar picks up enough :)

(+1)

Im sorry that happened ive been enjoying this game

Thank you. I'm not stopping, though - CK will live on!

I'm glad I'm sure I'm not the only one would miss it if it didn't live on

(+1)

At least Steam is pretty okay with really crazy fetishes and such, so it's unlikely anyone's gonna get booted there.

The only thing with Steam is the $100 deposit (you get it back after $1000 in total sales), which is something that tends to surprise/dissuade people when posting there for the first time. IIRC the requirements are the deposit and a "press kit", meaning the description, tags, screenshots, that stuff.

Yeah, it's not an insignificant amount, and they can still deny you after the review process... so it's definitely a risk. But if not enough people migrate to Subscribestar then it's one I simply have to take.
