Friday Progress Update, Jan 05: "Kittens"

Howdy, hey!

It's 2024. The first Friday of 2024, even! And I'm, predictably, back with another Friday Progress Update.

So it's been another week. Where do we stand? Firmly, say I! The script is now written. There's no doubt typos to fix and things like that, but the base script for the next update is at 100%. Writing the rest of it gave me around 130 more renders to do. Before I hit the sack tonight, that number will be below 100. When I write the next Friday update, I hope it'll be at 0 or damned close. So release in ... Two weeks? Shit. Did I write that? It's NOT A PROMISE!

So I'm going to touch on the topic of choices a bit, and the coming update. In the next update, more than before, some sexy stuff (which is what the choices are mainly about) is thrown the player's way without a choice then and there. Instead, previous choices dictate where things go.

On one hand, this gives a playthrough less interrupted by menus. On the other hand, if you just do one playthrough, you won't even know that there were things you didn't see. Good or bad?

A topic along the same lines are "customizable" sex scenes. I have mixed feelings about these in a VN. In a sandbox, it makes more sense. You often play through the same scenes several times, and can try different choices, or add choices, as you progress.

But in a VN, if I do a sex scene and have it considerably more customizable than now, for example letting the player choose foreplay/sex/finish position etc from 2-3 choices each. This is trivial from a coding point of view but less trivial from a rendering/posing point of view. Instead of doing that, you could do two sex scenes from it on two different days and show the player all of it.

But then again, a game must have choices to be a game. When we say "VN" we don't really mean a "Virtual Novel", we mean an "Interactive Virtual Novel". Choices. A novel is something you read and virtual just means it's on the computer. We call those read-only Kinetic Novels though. I'd blame Japan but they had a pretty rough start of 2024 already.

If you have feelings on the topic, let me know.

Now I'll tell you a secret to finish this up. I kind of like sandboxes. They catch a lot of flak but many of my favorite adult games have been sandboxes. Trying to do one wasn't in the cards for me though as I started out with zero coding experience. I'm also a fan of the old-school trainer type games. I haven't played a good one with 3D graphics though that I can recall.

Anyway, time to stop rambling and get back to rendering if I'm going to hit that sub-100 goal for the day! See you again soon and thanks for your support!

PS It's so cold out that I eat ice cream to warm up. No joke.

MMM choices are fine, Sandbox is usually a massive pain in the ass, leading to just skipping time non stop to reach whatever events are available, or missing them, and skipping non stop for god know how many cycles... VNs should remain VNs.

I prefer to have the least amount of choices. Sandbox usually is too much work for me. I definitely do not like collecting items/money/health, etc.
