Among Us 2

Hi everyone! Time for a big post!

First of all, thanks so much for playing and enjoying Among Us. It's been crazy to see how much more popular Among Us could be than we ever imagined.

Second of all, yes. We're confirming Among Us 2. This post is all about what that means and why we're doing it.

First and Most Important

Among Us 1 servers will stay alive for as long as it has enough players to start games. When we first started, we found that players couldn't really play when the servers had fewer than 30 - 50 players per hour. But lately we have 70,000 - 110,000 per hour. We'd be crazy to shut off the servers on you in 2021! And even if Among Us 2 gets lots of players, we'll just run both at the same time. If Among Us 1 servers shut down, I will open source the code so players can run servers instead.

But why a sequel?

Among Us 1 has been out over two years. It started as a tiny local-multiplayer-only game and has grown and grown and grown. Online multiplayer took 2 months and a total rework to make happen, then 6 months per extra map, and horrible server growing pains along the way. It really was not created to be this big. Because of this, it's extremely hard to add more things without breaking existing things. Frankly, it's terrifying to add in more things because the game is so fragile. Fixing this would require recreating core sections of Among Us, then making sure everything else still works on top. It's actually even harder than just making a new game.

So the first goal of Among Us 2 is to be made to withstand growth. We want to add to it at least as long as Among Us, but with fewer bugs along the way.

What will be in Among Us 2?

Well, first, we plan to basically include Among Us 1 in some capacity. Don't expect us to drag and drop all three maps directly over, but we think it's important to keep the simple play of Among Us with crewmates and impostors. But do expect some new options and balance tweaks. For example, we know very well that 3 impostor needs more than 10 players to be balanced, so 12-15 player games is a goal.

Second, we know that hide and seek is a very popular mode, but it is tough to find or exclude those games. Expect matchmaking to work very differently to better support custom modes and skill levels.

Also, we know that forming groups and making friends is tough. Accounts and friends will be in Among Us 2 straight out of the gate.

Better moderation: We know that hacking, bad behaviour, and toxic language is a problem in Among Us 1 and we definitely don't like it. But we never had the tools to really combat it effectively as a three person team, so expect Among Us 2 to launch with fewer hacks, a report button, moderators, etc.

But we've always known that the thing that would really make Among Us 2 unique from Among Us 1 is more roles. We aren't far enough in the design to confirm any roles or how they will work, but the primary addition for Among Us 2 is more complexity than just Crewmate vs Impostor. This should add a lot more replayability to the game and we're excited to see how we can shake things up for more advanced players.

We have a lot of other things we know players want to see, and a lot of surprises in store as well. So we definitely think Among Us 2 will be worthy sequel. That said, we want to get people playing it quickly, so we will probably start small in Early Access so we can grow Among Us 2 with player feedback. But the above is some of the key bare minimums before we launch at all.

Will it cost extra?

Yes, but.

We know a lot of players just started playing Among Us 1 which makes it look like we're quickly moving to a sequel, so we're going to try carry over some stuff from Among Us 1. We haven't confirmed that we can do any of this yet, but we might:

  • Launch with a discount coupon for Among Us 1 owners on Steam.
  • Keep Among Us 2 Mobile free but with (removable) ads.
  • Have free big content updates like maps and game modes. We're not making that mistake again.
  • Have in-game currency so we can break up big cosmetic bundles and let people buy/earn just the things they want.

When will it come out?

We really do not know at all. We just started planning. There is no art, programming or sound done at all. For the record Among Us took about 6 months to enter open beta (early access) and 6 more months to leave open beta. Among Us 2 will probably take at least as long to enter open beta, and will probably spend longer there.

Unlike Among Us 1, we expect to make Among Us 2 for PC first, then port to mobile. This will let us focus on making a great game faster because updates can come out in minutes on PC, where mobile can take hours or even days.

So basically

We're super hype to start Among Us 2. It'll take a while, but we'll make sure it's worth it. We hope you'll stick around to see what we can do.

Oh, also, we're launching merch on Friday August 21 at 12 PM (Noon, PST). Everything is on pre-order, but there will be shirts and a plush crewmate. The best places to hear when it launches are on Discord and our mailing list, but we'll do our best to get the word out.

Please create some sort of log in to the app, this way there could be like a cloude to save content between devices and if in a future u can add cross play that be very useful, Pls . thanks

there technically is already crossplay

(+2)

Can you guys please add quick play to just join in a lobby without searching for one and keep the Private match thing though.

ahhhhhhh :(

Maybe you can add more content to the game like a gamemodes, that will be great  i do not recommend adding a workshop because it can happen like with gmod in which if you want to enter a server you have to wait 1 or 2 hours

(+3)

man, it would be great if you could add voice chat or something

No me deja entrar a ningún servidor:(

Ya respondió por qué arriba bro

Noce se si es a sólo a mi pero parece que hay servidores que no funcionan por que a mi se me queda cargando al buscar una partida en línea

Is it possible to make Among Us 2 playable on console too?

Deleted 2 years ago

That would be cool on all consoles.

Game is fine, the problem is it's too easy to discard people. Impostors should be able to do work, or animations should be disabled for everyone. It's really annoyng to see ppl getting together to watch their tasks get done. Maybe this sounds too extreme, but i think is one of the main problems.

Deleted 1 year ago

If everyone except imposters had a "DUMMY/DUNCE" hat on, that would make it easy to tell imposters from crewmates. That last idea for the role is kinda bad and would break the game.

maybe only the people who voted for the jester have that hat, so it wouldnt out the imposters while still a [jokey] punishment for voting out the jester

i think you should add a character with a gun, like a detective. he is never the imposter, and can only shoot one person. this could make it easier to eliminate a imposter that no one believed u about, just get the detective to shoot them. they could porbably be toxic and just shoot random people, so it might not be the best idea, but i think that would be cool.

also maybe a character who can revive dead crewmates if they get there within a certain amount of time. that could break the game tho, because the  crewmate could just say who killed them so i dunno these ideas are probly trash but

maybe a character that can revives by himself, but he doesnt know the colors of the others crewmates, for him all crewmates looks the sam

A extra role would be someone that can kill an impostor. but can also kill Crewmates so he  would have to be careful.

Well I just wanted to say thanks you for being very good with your fans and never giving up, I have played among us since 2018 and I was surprised because such a good game, I mean it was simple but fun

(+4)

if they also had a proximity voice chat (you can only hear people close to you) as an option in game that would be awesome, and that would mean that in-game while doing tasks you could talk if you use voice chat and not only talk when i emergency meetings

So are they trying to make among us 2 for console players too? or am I missing something.

(1 edit) (+1)

Reviewing a lot of these comments, a lot of stuff I'm seeing about are console adaptations and voice chat, so here are my thoughts on those topics. They already have said that console version wouldn't be good because of the text chat. It's too slow to try and send even a small message. Now with Among Us 2, they said there would be in game accounts, meaning making friends and stuff. And therefore I believe that in game voice chat would be amazing. I'm thinking something like a reputation rating. People is poor reputation, would have less features like voice chat (assuming that they had that because of previous incidents like toxicity). People with higher reputations will have better chance of being queued with one another and those with lower reputation would have better chance of being queued with those of low reputations. People has also talked about ranked matches which I think this reputation system could be amazing to have. Abusive voice chat and toxicity doesn't have to be the only things that affect reputation, leaving mid game (though idk how this well be with people with poor connection) is just an example. These are just my input on these topics so feel free to discuss!

My friend told me ranks should be added but in different mode

so in logic term among us 1 will be for those with low end? cuz if theres 2 online games of the same name wouldnt be hard to manage? plus if AU2 di became succesful due to smooth server and good gameplay wouldnt some gamers abandon AU1 then just carry on,on AU2?

(1 edit)

1. for low end? hard to manage? they're not saying they're going to make it 3D and add a ton of effects, they just want to make it easier to add game modes and game changing mechanics in itself, as the AU1 source code is quite outdated and "it's terrifying to add in more things because the game is so fragile." And I don't know what's that about it being hard to manage, going off with the first quote, the source code is too fragile to even add anything completely new to it, so there's no real moderation, as it was not implemented in the first place, and no way to add new stuff, as it's too complicated to do so, so the two things that do have to be maintained or "managed" are: bugfixes and servers, and neither of those pose a real problem.
2. "Among Us 1 servers will stay alive for as long as it has enough players to start games. [...] And even if Among Us 2 gets lots of players, we'll just run both at the same time. If Among Us 1 servers shut down, I will open source the code so players can run servers instead."

i had a thougth abt new roles and abilities  for among us 2 if you were interested :)

first idea was that imposters could have a “poison” ability. it would have the same range as a normal kill but instead of killing them steaight away, there is a 20 second delay until they die. there will be a notification to the poisoned player that they have been poisoned and it will tell them who poisoned them, just like a normal kill. they will have a 20% movement reduction while rhey are poisined.  there is no way to remove the poison unless there is a meeting called wothin the 20 second period before they die, where they will ba able to tell people they were poisoned and by who. poisoned players will also not be able to call emergency meetings themselves, for obvious reasons. when imposter uses this ability, they will not be able to kill in the next 10 seconds no matter what.

one of my other ideas was a third role called hunter. this role would have a tranquiliser ability, which lowers vision to that similar of when lights are off, and has a 50% movement reduction that lasts for 8 seconds. this ability would have along range and would not appear with a notification to the effected player, instead of being near the player, the hunter would just have to have them in line of sight and click on them. there would be no visible animation to other players, but the player model of the effected player would appear to have a tranquiliser dart stuck in them. if a player dies while tranquilised their dead body will show the tranquiliser dart. this role would also be able to kill and use vents just like imposter, but they do not know who each other are and are competing against each other to win the game. meaning that hunter and imposter can both kill each other and are working independantly of each other. Hunters would be identifiable to each other by a yellow nametag. Hunters would win if they kill all imposters, but not visa versa, meaning that normal rules apply to imposters. becuase of this, hunters would be limited to 1 per game as long as there are at least 3 imposters, so hunters would only be present is larger games between 12-15 players

the last role idea i had was detective. this role would have a stun gun ability, which stuns a player for 3 seconds, lowering their movement by 70%. they would also be able to call emergency meeting from snywhere in any map. When detective discovers a body, they are able to identify if the person was killed by a hunter or an imposter, identifiable by a symbol next to the dead players name, however this only occurs if specifically the detective discovers the body. Detective would also have a flashlight when the lights are out, allowing them full vision in a cone shape in the direction that the player model is moving. the detective would also be identifiable to all other players by a blue nametag and would be limited to 1 detective per game

I believe these three roles/abilities would complement the new 15 player max games very well, as well as adding a new layer of depth and strategy to the game. thank you for your time :)

I have a few new role ideas. Plz give support.

Medic: Trashed idea. If you have an idea, give it.

Security guard: Can hide in vents, and while in vents, can look at cams. He will also have a flashlight so when the lights go out, he can use the flashlight. There can be up to 2 per game, and they are on the crew side.

Blackmailer: Will stop someone from talking in the next meeting. They can’t take vents. They can only say “I am blackmailed”. Up to 1 per game, and will be on the imposter side.

Assassin: Works like an imposter, except when the lights are out, they are nearly invisible, and when they kill, there is no body. If he kills and the lights aren’t out, it’ll be exactly like an imposter. They can take vents. The assassin can’t sabotage. Up to 1 per game, and they’ll be on the imposter side.

Imposter: Same thing here except there will normally be 2, but there may be 1 imposter and an assassin.

Crew mates. Nothing special. Up to 5 a game.

Detective. People that are in a certain radius of him he will gather info about. Once he gets enough info(a certain time limit) he’ll know what their role is. Up to 1 a game, and is on the crew mate side.

Engineer: He will auto fix electric, sabotage doors, and commas when he uses to fix them. He also has 1 fail safe to save a sabotage for the reactor or o2. He can also upgrade the security cameras by adding up to 2 cameras per game where he wants. These cameras will be visible from the security office, and guard. The engineer can also fix any of the hackers hacking. If he finds something hacked, he can fix it in 5 seconds. Up to 1 per game, and will be on the crew mates,

Hacker: Can sabotage anything ( including tasks for a certain time) and can even hack abilities. Can go in vents. The hacker can also hack security cameras meaning the cameras can’t be used. The abilities will be hacked for 20 seconds. Up to 1 per game, and is in the imposter side.

Spy: Works kinda like the spy in Tf2. The spy can turn into another color whenever they want, and after a body is found, or a meeting is called, the spy turns back into their normal color. The spy can kill, but can’t take vents. The spy can sabotage. If he kills the person their disguised as, he’ll turn into the person farthest away from him. If they are in the same room as the color he’s disguised as, to the person he’s disguised as, he’s his normal self. To everyone else, the spy is the the persons color, and the other persons color is the spy. Up to 1 per game and is on the imposter side. This role was made by pCumin.

Bodyguard. Will have a shield that can take 1 kill. If someone is in a certain radius and is about to be killed, he’ll take the hit for them. If he was protecting someone though, he won’t know who was the killer. Up to 1 per game, and is on the crew mate side.

Captain: Every 3 people that are ejected or killed, he finds out 1 person that is on his team. This goes on until he knows who all the people on his team are. Up to 1 per game, and is in the crew mates.

Relentless Bounty Hunter: The bounty hunter will have a list of 4 people to kill. His kill has no cool-down, but he can only kill those 4 people. If a bodyguard takes a kill, he’ll kill the bodyguard in that same shot. If a medic is reviving one of his victims, the bounty hunter can kill the medic too. If they are killed, he is given another person bounty. If he completes his list of 4 bounty’s, he wins. He can’t go in vents, or sabotage, for he is a neutral role.

Chef: The chef can leave food on the ground for people to pick up which will speed up tasks, and ability cooldowns. They are a neutral role, and win with either team as long as he survives.

There will be certain tasks for certain people, like the captain has to do a task in the captains quarters about everyone, or the engineer has to fix a camera outside navigation, or the hacker might have to do a specific hack somewhere.

Also, thanks to pCumin for this part, this works like Enemy on Board. Once you join a lobby, you are given a side, crew mate, or imposter. You get to choose your role though once you join. Once you’ve picked that role, no one can pick that same role unless it has multiple of it. Obviously, every new game, you are given a random side, and you gotta pick ur role fast. Also, imposters will have their own chat. The one with a bloody speech bubble will be imposter chat, and the normal speech bubble will be normal chat. This will help plan kills, and will have the game be more fun.

This is it. Obviously, all of these won’t be in a single game, it will be randomized, and with the up to 15 players in a lobby, i feel like these roles would be a good addition. Give feedback.

i like all of these roles except the medic and the ones that disable killing in any capacity. the one focal point of this game right now is that once you are dead you stay dead. i really love the engineer role. also something else i will say is that players shouldnt be able to find out the roles of any other players unless its proven they arent on imposter side through tasks. other than those two points i think these roles are great

I only want the medic so the people will stay in the game since most people leave after they die, and I think that with a possible second chance, it would keep the people in the game.

Medic but he can know when the body die

Medic can't be doable with the way you explained it. When you get killed, you know who killed you so if the medic revives them, that person who died will know who killed them.

Easy. Dont Allow the Person that is revived to talk

i also think that adding this wuanitity of roles would make it a little too complicated but still love the ideas

so i would say medic, bodyguard, detective and captain would make the game wayy too easy for crewmates to win

Detective has to stay near people for about a minute to 2 minutes to find role so he is not op.

plus I made it so I upgraded the captain so he has to wait for 3 people to get ejected or killed.

no medic can revive the body if he found the body before 20 seconds or the body will actutaly die

yes, thank you Firefox. I needed to find a way to make the medic less op.

this was my idea i like

(1 edit)

The spy role would be literally unplayable with friends, sounds really good on paper but is only playable with total strangers, and the bodyguard idea sounds way too op, as it can literally kill an impostor and even deny a kill, even if you remove the killing on a 1v1, the fact that it can deny a kill for anyone near you is still too op thinking that impostors literally snap to their victim's body when they kill and there's a little blood animation (if I'm not remembering wrong) too. Other than that, all those roles soud really interesting

(+1)

I switched the bodyguard role so it can’t kill, and they won’t know who the killer is, unless it’s a 1v1.

I’m also making it so the spy will only gain the ability of the person he kills, not the whole person.

(6 edits) (+2)

The spy role could just be like the TF2 spy (as you said) and let you transform to someone else whenever you want instead of having to kill someone to change to their color. That would also make matches much more interesting as you could change your color to someone who everybody knows is innocent. And also, all these roles could be in like a role selection screen, so, like that new game “Enemy On Board”, once you enter a match you already have a designated role: either crewmate or impostor, but as an impostor or crewmate you can choose between different characters and “races” (for impostors). So it could work almost or exactly like that: you enter a match and you’re given the role of either crewmate or impostor but you get to decide which role you want (with the limits that you already said to each role so if someone locks up, for example, detective everybody else has detective restricted as there’s already someone who’s chosen it).

edit:rewrote the first part because I felt I didn’t quite expressed myself well and wrote the second paragraph about the roles and a “role selection system”.

yes, I’ll put that as the spy role. I’ll also give u credit. Of course, whenever there’s a meeting called, you turn back to your normal self.
