Devlog 10

I will admit, this week got off to a rough start. We got our grades back from our past week’s game and ours was less than stellar. We had some rough patches and they ended up getting the best of us. However, this week ended up turning into a chance to redeem myself with an all-new battle-battle-type game. The objective was to make up our own competitive game that had no violence whatsoever. I know that I covered a little bit of this in last week’s devlog, but I wanted to mention our progress so far with the  poker idea. We are still working out a title which made me think back to a portion from Chapter 7: Game Design Documentation- “Even if you aren’t sure of the title yet, you are probably calling it by a name. Later on, the team can brainstorm titles and choose one based on what will communicate the idea of the game most effectively.” Despite this being a hurdle, it is the last thing on our minds right now. Unlike our game's role model (poker), our game requires no skill at all really. It all depends on the unpredictable luck of the roll of the dice. Chapter 11: Randomness- You cannot be “good” at LCR because no skill is involved in determining the winner.” We kind of wanted to use this factor to our advantage. We found that our game being based on luck rather than skill made the game more fun for everyone. We made the game hard by having our characters fight powerful bosses. Chapter 11: Randomness- “When players lose because of randomness, often they feel as though they had a lack of agency in the result. However, when they win because of randomness, they are less likely to object.” Overall, we feel that our game is reaching the point of perfection. We have a solid game background with fun characters that pack mighty punches against towering bosses who want nothing more than to defeat their opponents. The game is almost finished and we cannot wait to show it off!

I’m happy that you’re determined to bounce back from the previous project. I recognized that you worked hard on it but faced a lot of obstacles. They say “past performance is no guarantee of future results.” And usually that means not resting on your laurels but in this case it means you have a fresh start with BattleBattle and I’m looking forward to seeing what your team has!
