https://itch.io/t/3622956/research-study-on-ttrpgs-surveyResearch Study on TTRPGs (Survey!)https://itch.io/t/3622956/research-study-on-ttrpgs-surveyWed, 27 Mar 2024 22:31:32 GMTWed, 27 Mar 2024 22:31:32 GMTWed, 27 Mar 2024 22:31:32 GMTHello everyone!

I’m PsychHound, or Luka. I’m a TTRPG dev here but I’m also in grad school for game studies, researching therapeutic applications for gaming. I’m doing a research study through my university looking into long-term tabletop roleplay and emotional resilience.

Essentially, my research is asking the question: Does long-term play of multiplayer tabletop roleplaying games affect your ability to weather social and emotional challenges?

The study is additionally interested in whether marginalized communities have a different experience with tabletop roleplay and emotional resilience than non-marginalized groups do.

The study will take place in a few stages.

The first stage is a survey. On the survey, there are screening questions to make sure all participants qualify for the study, and then open, short-answer questions about both your experiences with roleplay and making characters, and also questions about emotional resilience. You’re able to answer questions with little depth to more depth depending on your comfort level, or skip questions if you need to. The survey will take approximately 30 minutes, but depends on how in-depth you go with your answers

The next stage is an optional follow-up interview. After the survey closes, three participants will be selected to complete an opt-in interview which will last approximately 30 minutes to 1 hour. During the interview, we will discuss more in-depth your answers from the survey, and talk about the character(s) you’ve played.

The survey will be open from 3/27/24 to 4/12/24, or until I hit my maximum number of responses

To qualify, you must be a tabletop roleplayer, who has played at least three roleplay sessions of a multiplayer TTRPG, during a span of 6 months or longer. You must be 18 years or older and an American citizen

If you know others who qualify and would be interested in the survey, please feel free to share this post or the survey link with them as well

You can find the survey here: https://lukabrave.surveysparrow.com/s/emotional-resilience-and-tabletop-roleplay...

Thank you so much to everyone who is able to participate or spread the word!

I'm thrilled to announce the release of my new horror game, Confined, inspired by the PS1 era. After six weeks of dedicated work, I'm excited to share it. I would greatly appreciate it if you could check it out and possibly share it with others. It's also FREE!

Confined is a short horror-puzzle game where you have three minutes to solve a puzzle to escape a kidnapper’s grungy, dangerous basement.

I just wanted to share an experience and a small thought with you.
So many games on itch are free. And that's wonderful! I love that so many designers provide community copies for their games. TTRPGs Are such an accessible and affordable medium and I love them because of it.

A couple of days ago somebody left me a 2$ tip for my nano-TTRPG "Two hundred year old Greenland shark". It's more of a meditation exercise than a game. But somebody valued it enough to go back and tip me 2$. It is the first thing I published and the 2$ was the first time somebody paid for it. I was dancing! Really... it meant a lot to me.

Nobody expects to make much money from indie TTRPGs. I get that. And money isn't the best form to show appreciation. Direct engagement with a game, playing it, talking about it, sharing it and commenting on it... that's what it is about!
But still, this moment when I received the 2$ made me think.
I think it has to do with AI devaluing all the work that goes into writing and illustrating a TTRPG. Because that is an actual decrease in  monetary value of work that is being done by illustrators and writers.

So I want to encourage you to tip people 1 or 2$, if you can afford it. Because for the creative sector these are troubling times. So maybe use a bit of spare change to show somebody appreciation. Tell AI to bugger off!

What was the last human-made game you tipped a creator for?  For me it was Diedream.

There are already very good graphic designers, you just have to put the text and the program will provide you with some art depending on your description.

I have seen that some tools are very good at this especially graphics. I have not noticed the game industry would have an effect too along with the content writers and photographers.

Just saw an AI tool that is dedicated to game assets only. So what is the future of free game assets sites like 'itch' and others or the assets download sites...

I´ve been playing a lot of Matr1x 0verl0ad, Cuttle, Rummy, scoundrel, Regicide, The Council... Do you know any other games played with a standard deck of cards that lasts less than 45 minutes (other than traditional card games)?  I don´t care if they are for 1, 2, 3 or 4 players.

I could also use some games that make use of traditional family games gear that we all have at home (Cards, dice, chess, parcheesi, dominoes...)

Bonus points if the game has a theme.

I liked the idea of the students having a "product" at the end of an activity. In that first attempt, I "pre-drew" the prompts and put them into a Powerpoint Presentation. In small groups, students added items to the grid of their map. After giving them a few prompts, I had them follow the "finishing up" steps to use their own intuition/logic to fill out the rest of the map, then pick out some notable features to share with the class.

I will have another chance to try this with another group of students. This time I will have them create a more clearly defined "map key" to go along with their map.  I will have some large chunks of time(1 hour, short break, then 1 hour) to work with these students in a relatively relaxed setting for a few days.  There will probably be 10 to 12 of them. I will be doing some more typical jig-saw(I have this information; You have that information) activities and role-play dialogues(shopping/restaurant, etc...), but since I will have these big chunks of time, I'd like to try integrating some different activities, especially ones that result in a product.  I'm considering something like Magizoology to complement introducing animals along with habitat/diet, etc...  I'm also considering something like Evergreen Wilds to practice describing past experiences and problem-solving.

Itchio has a ton of these "solo journaling games" and other outgrowths from the TTRPG community and I know there is a lot of cool stuff out there. What are some other tabletop games/activities that could work well for this context?

One thing that was central and problematic is the role of stars (always 5, quantity over quality) and star-comments (private) on itch.

Before making any uninformed suggestions, I’d like to know if there’s a channel or federation of critiques on itch where they discuss practices. Then we’d neeed to know what are the app limits. I mean, there’s already a lot done, but I think there’s a lot more to do, and maybe it can be done with less effort and some coordination. Thanks for your attention and twice so if you can try and make evaluation progress on itch.

I hope it is okay to post this here, but I have a few questions.

I’m just beginning to design very small ttrpgs and taking part in a game jam. Is there any ressource that lists the different system suitable for small games with an explanation? I keep seing frameworks like PbtA, FitD, 24xx, osr and a few I know. But others I never heard of and it’s kinda hard to comprehend.

On another note, these boards seem really quiet since 2019/2020. Did anything happen in the community or did discussions maybe shift to another platform I am not aware of?

Thanks in advance

xoxo

I've been digging into the games from the Racial Justice bundle and am trying to decide what I should pitch to my friends to play. The folks I have in mind have minimal ttrpg experience--I've started a couple D&D campaigns (as a player) and listen to 5e/PbtA related podcasts.

From the bundle, Subway Runners, Blades in the Dark, Troika, and Damn the Man Save the Music stick out as being appealing, but I'm open to a short-ish, pre-made D&D campaign.

Thanks!
PS we'd be playing over Discord, so the remote elements of Subway Runners are appealing

It's a low crunch gritty and eccentric sci-fi with a strong focus on open ended character creation. Player ideas normally relegated to their character bios become the most crucial skills and traits a character can have.

Come join the fun and let's explore the world of Fainbure together!🥳

Got any  questions for the devs?  Please ask them here! I have been experimenting with writing TTRPGs for a few years now, but this is my first ever project to  go on kickstarter. I'm super excited! So hopefully it piques your interest. <3

    Cheers!

EDIT:  Hey, so, I posted this topic in the Tabletop Gaming section, and I've gotten a couple emails and replies from video game folks.  So, sorry, but I won't be reviewing any video games.

It has finally been discovered the way to browse itchio role-playing games in French!

To do this, you just have to go through the meta data when publishing a game and add the language.

So here is a nice list of games in French that keeps growing: https://itch.io/physical-games/newest/lang-fr

    Salut !

Il a enfin été découvert le moyen de parcourir les jeux de rôle itchio en français !

Pour ça, il suffit de passer par les méta données lors de la publication d'un jeu et d'ajouter la langue.

While these work for one player physical games, and likely unnecessary for games for 3+ players, games designed specifically for 2 players are not catered to.

I would like to request that everyone who has a physical game designed for 2 people, please tag it with "2-player." If enough of us do so, it will hopefully become one of the suggested tags, allowing people to search for games designed for two people.

I'll be going through the responses and reaching out to selected developers in the next few days.

    Howdy Tabletop devs and fans!

I’m Spencer from itch.io, and I want your help.

I’m working on an upcoming bundle (think something similar to the Halloween Bundle) but exclusively made of tabletop games. Because this is the first time we’re doing something like this, I wanted to come to the community for input.

My goal is to get a survey of who’s interested in taking part in a bundle. If you want to join in, please fill out this Google Form but keep the following in mind:

    • Please respond with YOUR PROJECTS only. Don’t sign someone else’s game up that you think would be a good fit.
    • Only respond with projects that you have the rights to distribute
    • This is for tabletop projects only, this means no video games, soundtracks, or other content. Sorry! (Don’t worry, we’ll have another bundle for you soon)
    • There are limited spots available in this bundle, so not everyone who fills out the form will be included.

We’re looking to run the bundle around the end of November, so we’ll leave the form up for around a week and then start contacting interested developers from there.

If there are games from other developers you’d love to see in the bundle feel free to send them a link to this post or link their projects in a response below.

If you have any questions or feedback you can email me directly at Spencer(AT)itch.io or respond directly to this post.

https://itch.io/t/570130/hey-looking-for-people-interested-in-a-new-vampire-rpgHey, looking for people interested in a new Vampire RPGhttps://itch.io/t/570130/hey-looking-for-people-interested-in-a-new-vampire-rpgWed, 02 Oct 2019 14:31:17 GMTWed, 02 Oct 2019 14:31:17 GMTWed, 02 Oct 2019 14:31:17 GMTHello, would anyone of you be interested in Vampire Tabletop RPG that focuses on fiction first (akin to Blades in the dark), has a less edgy tone in general compared to VtM for example, whilst still having a focus on the internal struggle of being an immortal bloodsucker and trying to hold on to your humanity?

So with the intro out of the way, let's talk a bit more about the specifics.

As I mentioned above, the game is fiction first, which in this case means that the rules will be there more as foundation to help the players,  instead of telling the players what they can and can't do. This is to allow the players to creatively solve problems using their vampire powers and ingenuity, without the system hindering them.

It will still have some ground rules and limits to put the players in the right frame of mind and help ground the ideas of what is possible versus impossible.

Roling is then also limited to when the characters action has a chance of major consequence that they would like to avoid -  for example, if a player wants to bust open a gate using their super strength, that's pretty easy to do, but will cause a lot of noise, alerting everyone nearby.

If they would like to do it quietly instead, that's a little bit harder - requiring a roll to see if they can bust the gate, quietly.

The dice used is slated to be the trusty D6. Or multiple of them.

How you play the game is up to each group and what type of campaign you want to play. Generally however, the players will cooperate in pursuit of their own or the groups goals, whilst avoiding outing themselves as vampires and outsmarting their opposition, whether it be humans, vampire hunters, other vampires or creatures not dared spoken of.

If this is not the right place to post it or if you would know of place where to post it, that would also be greatly appreciated.

I know the info's a little vague, and that's because it's still very much in the prototype stage and everything could change on a dime. I'm mainly trying to gauge, interests in the idea.

If its any clue I think it was distributed through itch.

This little social game was pitched as the players being AIs leaving messages for each other as the huge Machine-City around them died. Players would receive little prompts, which they would respond to by recording little messages and sending them into the Twitter tag cloud until they finally got their death notice and their signal died.

    I'm almost certain I didn't dream this.

    Anyobe remember it?

I publish today a new free web app  called For The Dramahttps://www.forthedrama.com )  for playing RPG online. It's based on the Descended From the Queen Licence by Evil Hat Publisher and Alex Robert's game : For the Queen.

For the Queen is a card-based storygame that begin playing in minutes up to 5-8 players.

For the Queen is talking about a Queen, live and betrayal. On this app, there are already 4 games :

    •  For the promised land : You are exiled, migrant, refugee, expatriate going to a city that not want to adopt you.
    • Story of choruses : a game inspired by the Sense8 series.
    • Doing the Job : a game about wrestlers
    • For my fellows : a game about an old group of heroes trying to reform again

I made this app because I love so much Alex's game, and because I could'nt find a good virtual table software for such a simple card-game.

My second goal is to allow everyone to create their own game. Try it, crash test it, improve and share it for free.

I hope you will like the idea !
