For that, I would like to change one thing, and since I am not a programmer, I thought asking for help here might be worth a try.

So, the target language for my version is German.

In Italian and English, you type the commands in the imperative: "verb + noun", for instance: "take parachute"

In German, that would be possible as well: "nimm den Fallschirm". However, there are quite a few compound verbs, such as "weglegen" for "drop", which would result in: "lege den Fallschirm weg".

I just can't find a way that this could work, so instead I would like to swap the verb and the noun, which would result in the compound verbs to not be split: "Fallschirm weglegen".  The game just doesn't do it automatically, it cares very about the pattern of verb + noun, and I don't know how to change that so it would actually align with German grammar.

In my screenshot, I used "take parachute". The preferred one ("Fallschirm nehmen") is not recognized ("Wie?"). Please note that this is not supposed to be a discussion about opinions on German grammar.

PS: Just before I wanted to upload this post, I noticed that the input also doesn't recognize the umlauts (ä, ö, ü) as well as the ß (eszet, or sharp s). The latter one is fairly easy to fix, just change every ß in the commands to ss, but typing ae, oe and ue instead of ä, ö ü does not seem very user-friendly.

Would it be possible for submissions to be extended? I saw several people in the unofficial Discord group mention that they didn't really have time to work from version 1.1 of the code since it was released in the latter half of the submission period. I suspect I'm not the only person who had a lot of family gatherings to go to right after version 1.1 was released.

Also, uploading was really slow for me - every time I clicked a button, I had to wait several seconds for anything to happen, which meant my projects got uploaded, but not officially submitted to the jam.

It would be great to have extended submissions to counteract the crunch time and slow upload speed! Thanks for your consideration.

Happy new year!

The deadline for the project upload has passed and we are now in the voting phase… but I have a certain problem. It may seem insignificant, nothing game-breaking or anything… but there is a discrepancy in my game. The button used to go up is…well, letter U. (Aside from some longer commands).And this is how I marked it in instructions… but NOT in the default response to GetOut command.(Where all the directional symbols are listed in brackets)For some reason there I made a mistake and used the letter G! Well, that’s a discrepancy. And a technical error/weird situation, because if you press G…it will do nothing(It’s not supposed to anyway; I did not program it in)! It’s supposed to be U key. I would very much like to correct my mistake(I already did in the file)… but for that, I would need to replace the current file with…version 1.01, so to speak, on the submission page. Are we allowed to do that, or too late now?

TLDR: I made a typo and want to correct it, but for that I need to re-upload/replace the game zip. And it’s past the deadline. Can I do that? Natalia Ryś

Hi!

I was pretty much done with everything and in the previous version everything worked fine, but now that I updated (and cleaned) my translation to the new 1.1 game version, the commands are broken in a way that I can't even begin to understand.

Basically, everything is fine, until you make a typo, look for something that is not present in the current room, or drop something that you have already dropped (there might be other issues, but this is what I found so far).

I have a few ideas. Hungarian verbs in their imperative form are often composed of two words, where the prefix gets removed from the verb and gets put after the verb (i.e. megfogni (take) --> fogd meg (you take, imperative). I played around a lot with regex to make the game understand these verbs with all of their variations and synonyms, and everything worked perfectly in the previous version.

All of the commands still work, but only if you don't accidentally make a typo somewhere. I don't understand why this happens. Maybe something having to do with the default messages of the game?

To be fair, I may have maken a mistake somewhere in the code, but it's so long and I'm working on this alone, that I have no clue. I'll keep looking for mistakes and update or delete this post if I find anything.

Gibberish gets interpreted correctly as gibberish, everything works perfectly until you make a mistake, then the game just breaks.

I have a couple of screenshots, explaining the issue. They are in Hungarian, but I added a few notes to make the issue a bit more clear.

THANKS IN ADVANCE :)

Example 1: taking the parachute

Example 2 (whatever comes after the object gets ignored, this is perfect for the Hungarian case system) :

2. Just to make sure: the re-zipped folder is supposed to have the same name as when we received it(AnC-Multilanguage….I don’t remember exactly) or should we add a target language code (PL-pl in my case) at the end of it, so that Itch auto-detects the language when we upload the folder? Or maybe there is no such functionality and we are to set the language manually anyways).

I know I was asking about lots of things throughout this Jam, but if everything goes right, this is hopefully my LAST question🙂 Natalia

Being sure to always reach all the string in game, or test weird paths of the game, could be difficult.
Lots of command need to be inserted by hand, and, there is no copy-paste 😬

If you know how to play a little in the browser's console (or in the JS files): I'm happy to share with you something that you can use to magically type your commands, always in the same order...  without typing

Let's start with a function that let us simulate the typing of any given word.

function insert(input) {
  input.split('')
    .forEach((c, i) => {
      setTimeout(
        () => document.dispatchEvent(new KeyboardEvent('keydown', { keyCode: c.charCodeAt(0), key: c })),
        i * 4
      )
    });
  setTimeout(() => document.dispatchEvent(new KeyboardEvent('keydown', { keyCode: 13 })), input.length * 5);
 }

If you paste this function in the console, you can now use it like

insert("OPEN DOOR");
insert("TAKE THE BONE"):

Not so useful, as you need to type all instruction one by one (but at least you can copy-paste them  👀

Adding some more JS magic we can have a list of words to iterate with a simple function, and then, use only one command to "go to the next value".

function* inputsIterator(inputs) {
  let index = 0;
  while (index < inputs.length) {
    yield inputs[index];
    index++;
  }
}
const iterator = inputsIterator([
  "OPEN DOOR",
  "TAKE BONE"
]);

With all the above done you can write

 insert(iterator.next().value);

in the console and the first time it will insert "OPEN DOOR", the second time "TAKE THE BONE".

Is it clear? Yes, No? Available for explanation in case.
PS: This does not work on itch.io, but only when you test locally.

I decided to change ‘senno’ to Polish word for ‘sense’(which is just ONE LETTER OFF: ‘sens’-I mean like in ‘making sense’ not like one of the five SENSES)and then, because we need that fifth direction, conjugate it! Basically the direction combination would be South-East-North-South-Up.(and yes, I am using English/internationally accepted symbols for the directions, because TWO of the directions in Polish-north and south-start with a ‘P’-północ/południe. So I would need to pull off shortenings like PLN and PLD…which would be TOTALLY impractical for the riddle!) Buuuut…that requires changing the coordinates/labirynth behavior, right? Could I please ask for some advice on how that could be done? And another pronlem: would the ‘Up’ command/coordinate be even VALID/feasible in that labirynth? Or is it only possible to move on a horizontal plane (am I making sense? Haha😂)there? Thanks in advance for help, Natalia

I found a simple way to quickly go through all the texts while playing/testing with few simple changes on CRT.js like this

For copy/paste people, the two added lines

document.addEventListener('keydown', (keyEvent) => { if (keyEvent.key === " ") this.printOptions.quickPrintDelay = true }, true);
document.addEventListener('keyup', (keyEvent) => { if (keyEvent.key === " ") this.printOptions.quickPrintDelay = false }, true);

And the one you need to modify

resolve => setTimeout(resolve, this.printOptions.quickPrintDelay ? 5 : ms)

How this should work?

Just keep the spacebar pressed when you want to speed up the text.

When I was taking one last glance at my translation file, i noticed that some lines are literal “spaghetti noodles” (ironic, since the game is Italian!): they just keep stretching. You need to literally scroll the code editor screen(horizontally). I thought: “Oh no! No way something THAT long will fit on the screen in one go(I fear it would “leak” out, rendering part of the message invisible to the player)Need to cut it up”. And so, I put some \n tags inbetween sentences of such long passages.

1. Did I do  the right thing, or it would fit on the screen normally(despite at first glance being as long as a Loch Ness monster :) )

2. About that \n tag: please remind me…is it JUST \n, or do we need to ESCAPE it(\\n)?

I have a doubt, maybe stupid, about the licence (CC BY-NC-ND) present on the source files.

I was thinking about publishing my translation also on my GitHub profile.
The translation alone doesn't make so much sense to me, so I was thinking to have it along with the source code.

But seeing that "NoDerivatives" make me wonder if I can do it or not.

----

On top of that, there is also a sentence in the LocJam page that makes me think.

Can I do more?
Yes! If you have Javascript programming knowledge, you can tweak the code to take your entry to next level.

Maybe, I think that a licence like CC BY-NC-SA suits more what we are asked to do here. Because even if we're not sharing the source code, we are actually sharing a modified version of the provided game. (translations are generally considered adaptation, or derivate).

Sorry to be so picky,
It's just to understand.

As I was testing the game in Traditional Chinese, I found that action commands were not coded to accomodate languages that don't have spaces between words (Chinese, Japanese, etc.)

The code requires the input to be 拿  降落傘 (TAKE PARACHUTE), but a typical player would type 拿降落傘 (no space).

To fix this, go to: IFEngine --> js --> Parser.js. Do the following in Parser.js:

1. Change line 75 from

"(?:\\s+(.+))?" :

to

"(?:\\s*(.+))?" :

2. Change line 76 from

"\\s+(.+)";

to

"\\s*(.+)";

This will allow the game to process user inputs that don't contain spaces in the text.

Note: this change won't break the original game (IT, EN). The user will still be able to input "TAKE PARACHUTE" however, this change would also allow "TAKEPARACHUTE" as a valid input. Not sure if this is a behavior that the original devs want to allow.

I'm currently translating the game into Hungarian, however during testing none of the commands that have special characters (i.e. vowels with diacritics, such as áéóöőúüű) seem to work. For instance, I translated prega (pray) as imádkozz and the command broke. Or during movement, north and south are broken, because in Hungarian the words include special characters (észak (north), dél (south)).

Could it be an encoding issue with Javascipt? Diacritics do appear correctly when displayed in the text.

If I change the commands to not include any special characters, then they resume working, but I would rather find a different solution, as letters without diacritics can be hard to read in Hungarian. Does anyone know what might cause this issue or how it might be solved?

I'm kind of new to localizing so thanks in advance :))

For those who are having trouble working directly into the javascript file, I recommend trying to use a CAT Tool.
A CAT is not just a wondeful brand of tractor or the translator favourite companion, but also a software that helps the translator keeping track of their translation. The Memory helps you by telling you how you previously translated similar sentences, and the UI put source and target clearly side by side.

In our Javascript case, it can also help because you can program it to give you only the text that needs translating :)
There are plenty plenty of options out there, and I imagine you can make .js file work with pretty much any of them.
But I use these one, so here is how to add a .js file and have it properly analyzed.

I'll talk about MemoQ (free trial) and Trados Studio (no free trial). The best solution is OmegaT (free and open source) but I could not make it work for the time being.
If you know how to make OmegaT accept .js file please share it below. And If you're familiar with any other software don't hesitate to share as well !

You may have noticed that game inputs include quite a few "coded" characters, typically a backslash \ followed by a letter, with some parentheses and colons along the way. These are called regular expressions and they are used as variables in the game so that players can say either "" and both of those answers would be accepted in the game.

The first one you meet is \n which is a newline, i.e. the end of a line of text and return to the next line, e.g. typing two\nwords will display the text

two
words

Now it gets complicated because the regex can be combined - using (parentheses) allows you to isolate regular expressions from one another, and using a quotation mark ? allows you to make text optional, so if I want the text "big blue fish" but "big blue" is optional then I will type (big blue)?fish but let's say I want both big and blue to be optional so that the input would be (big)?(blue)?fish so here both bigfish and bluefish would be acceptable displays, as well as bigbluefish.

Which brings us to \s the whitespace character, i.e. a typographical space - when inputs include multiple words you probably want them to be separate so here bigbluefish should probably big blue fish, then you will add \s to your text to enforce the space. BUT you also want the game to recognize that the \s is RegEx that is combined with text, or else typing (big\s)?(blue\s)?fish would give you the display big\sblue\sfish. You will then need to escape the Regex with another \ e.g. (big\\s)?(blue\\s)?fish so that the display would be big fish or blue fish or big blue fish. You will notice the game uses the + symbol here to make sure that a user can enter one or more spaces without getting penalized so (big\\s+)?(blue\\s+)?fish allows the answer big           blue     fish.

If you are working in a language with marked cases, then you will definitely need to use RegEx to accept singular or plural answers: so you will put the acceptable endings in their own block using (parentheses) then start the string with a question mark? to indicate an optional ending followed by a colon: with the acceptable endings, e.g. ending(?:s)  would accept either ending or endings as an input.

The vertical bar | marks alternatives, so if you have a question where the answer could be blue OR red OR orange OR yellow then you will use blue|red|orange|yellow. This also works for alternative endings , e.g. ending(?:s|a|u)  would accept either ending or endings or endinga or endingu as an input.

You'll meet a handful of other RegEx bits such as (.+) which means any text, but you can generally leave those alone!

I'd like to ask for assistance since I did not develop the game and just wanted to start my career as a game translator. This is my first experience in translating and localizing games, so again I ask for help from the community and event organizers. Happy new year for the people reading this.
