Game where cactuses wanna beat you up

I started working on this game idea of mine some time ago, I don't have a title yet so let's just call it Some Cactus Game for now.

Main concept is that you will drive around in the desert while cactuses are chasing you and trying to destroy your car. You will be able to buy new cars and upgrade them with heavier duty bumpers, shields, guns and things like that.

I have some of the basic mechanics done, like cactuses beating you up:

You can run over them to show who's boss:

The car has a damage system, individual parts will break if they receive enough damage:

Currently I'm working on more cactus models, but for now that's all :>

New cactus is setup and running, he is a chunkier boi:

I've been also working on a turret system, it is working nicely finally. It can detect targets within a certain area, will shoot at target when it is aimed at, can only rotate between predefined ranges and will return to an idle position when there are no targets in range:

Some updates to keep track of progress:

  • New car is inbound

  • Fixed some bugs with the turret system, everything works as intended now
  • Started the work on the spawning and enemy wave system, on a basic level it is working, good enough for testing

I think this looks like a super fun game I would love to play! The game play reminds me of the good old PS2  GTA games when I would skip questing just so I could steal a car, get chased and race around while getting beat up and shot at by helicopters. My car would get beat up, bonnet would fly off and eventually catch fire and explode and that would be so satisfying to me for some-reason!!!!! Definitely put a big grin on my 10 year old self (my mum would buy GTA even if it was R18+ for us because we were "mature enough" to handle it ahaha). I would love to play this game when its finished! I love the idea of aggressive cactus! Maybe some could even shoot needles at you.

I'm happy that you like it, you really gave me a boost to keep working on this game! I also grew up playing the 3D era GTA games, so I may have got some inspiration from there :) I like your idea of cactuses shooting needles, I also have a completely round cactus in mind which will roll towards the car and explode on impact, so there will be definitely more variety of the enemies.

There's also a bug I couldn't fix yet, sometimes a cactus will stay in its attack state even when the car is too far away to be hit and it will just move towards the player hitting the air. I just call these raging cactuses, maybe I'll leave it this way even if I find the reason why it happens, just for the fun of it :>

I've been working on the gameplay area, there is still a lot of work to do but I have the layout finished:

I want to include features and landmarks any proper desert should have, like a secret military base, an abandoned junkyard, a crashed UFO site, just to name a few.

Hello, I'm a graphic artist willing to work on your project, I am a little new to it so I'd be willing to do it for free with credit. I also want to give some real feedback, I like how the particles look and how the models look, it makes me think of a Nintendo game, especially with how the cacti would spill juice instead of blood. I could see myself playing this game in the future. I would also think it would be funny if you had a cactus on top of the car as a turret like how the Ghost Busters have Slimer. I love the art style of the game so far, keep it up.

Here are some examples of my past work:

(I did not make the pixel duck)

Hey, thank you for your feedback, it helps a me lot and I'm happy that you like what I've made so far.

Also, thank you for your offer but for now I want to see how far I can take the game on my own. I only have external assets for stuff that are absolutely beyond my knowledge, like the car controller or the pooling system I use for spawning. The rest is made by me and for things that I have zero experience in I like to figure it out how to make, like how it was with rigging and animating a model.

Looking forward to the game, and if you ever change your mind just contact me.

I have the map setup in Unity, I managed to build a material with shadergraph to procedurally mask the wavy sand texture, it's not really visible on the gifs but they are there. Also played around with some post processing, slowly starts to feel like a real game :>
