Mouse sensitivity requires a fair bit of fine tuning to get right, so I assume people just spent more time focused on the visuals, and less on that fine tuning.

Exactly. 👍

For this jam, whichever project we find the most visually appealing will win.👍

A browser version of the "game" running.

You can also submit a desktop version along with the browser version, if it runs better than the browser version.

Submitting an actual game will help us make sure that it's made with GDevelop. 👍

You can make your own models in other software and then import them into GDevelop. 👍

You can import GLB models into GDevelop with the default 3D model object type.

You need to own the legal rights to anything you submit, and you can reuse parts of existing projects, but you can't submit an entire project that was made prior to the jam.

Hope that helps. 👍

Not this time.

I made this post to try and help explain what we're looking for:
https://itch.io/jam/staged-scene-jam/topic/5636703/submission-expectations

There will be no community voting this time. Just judge voting. 👍

Since this isn't the usual game jam format, we'll explain exactly what the judges will be looking for.

1. A small visually appealing 3D game scene.
2. Something in the project must be in motion, or if it is a static scene, the camera should be moving/movable.

That's it!

Here are some examples of small "staged" scenes:

r/gdevelop - Graphics Showcase

That is.... strange. 😅

It's probably better if you just google the GDevelop YouTube channel and see the page there.

That's strange, it works for me.

Here's the channel page, you should be able to find the video at the top of the videos page.

It's set to premiere. 👍

Sorry, but games are rated based on the state they were in during the voting period.

We don't go back and check games afterwards, because that wouldn't be fair to everyone else.

You can update your games now. The judge voting was only for the 3 days after the voting period ended.

We're now creating the video and media for the announcement, so the judging part is finished. 👍

(1 edit)

The jam winners announcement/release will happen on Monday, December 1st.

The winners video will be set to premiere on the GDevelop YouTube channel, and when that video finishes playing, all of the community voting results will be unlocked here on itch.

Hope to see you all there. 👍

(1 edit)

1. Please do not update your itch page for the 3 days following the end of the voting period.
So the judges can have time to properly judge your game in the state it was in during the jam.

2. The winners video will be released on the GDevelop YouTube channel.
The community voting results will be released along with the winners video, which will be announced ahead of time on the channel, so we can all come together and find out who won at the same time.

3. Don't forget to add your game to the game jam 8 page on gd.games.
You can enter your game dashboard from inside of the engine and add the game jam 8 genre tag to your game, which will add your game to the game jam 8 page on gd.games. The genre tag will be removed when the winners video is published, so you'll lose your chance of being displayed on that page if you don't do it before then.

4. Jams are for personal development and fun.
Regardless of the rank your game gets in the jam, be sure to look at how much you learned, and the fun you had pushing yourself to create something new. 👍

To be added to the gd.games jam page, you need to add the Game Jam 8 genre to your game in your game dashboard through the engine, and make sure that your game is set to be visible on gd.games.

We're watching the community tab for blatant rate for rate posts.

Reporting is better used for games/users breaking rules written on the main page of the jam. 👍

You can't update your game, but you can update your game page and add screenshots.

As long as you don't touch your game file at all, because itch will kick you from the jam if you do.

It's unfortunately too difficult to track and moderate to make it into an official rule, because people would just have those conversations elsewhere. But we try to minimize it by moderating the community tab. 👍

Games in the jam are locked in until the jam voting period ends, and even then, updates shouldn't be made to games until 3 days after voting ends, so the judges are able to accurately test your game.

After that time is up, you can update your game. 👍

This is a message thread explaining why people should not ask people to rate their game in exchange for rating theirs.

If we see you repeating this behavior, moderation actions may have to be taken towards your game.

Please ask them to "play" your game instead of asking them to rate your game because you rated theirs, and then they can rate it if they want to after playing it.

Like dskyle77 pointed out, we'll mostly be looking at the highest rated games in the jam, but we'll also be scanning through the other games in the jam as well.

So make sure your thumbnail, screenshots, and game page are all as nice as they can be. (That will attract the eye of judges and other participants.)

While editing your game page though, do not touch your game file, because you may accidentally disqualify yourself.

Some people will go around, offering to rate the games of other people, if those people rate their game. This exchange doesn't mention playing the game at all, it's just about getting more ratings on games. So a group of people could get dozens of fake ratings on their games in a very short amount of time and inflate their scores.

If you want people to rate your game, the best way to do it is to:
Play the games of other people, leave some helpful feedback and rate their game fairly, and then ask if they'll play your game.

That will result in a much more fair jam. 👍

I've seen rate for rate spamming ruin the scoring of jams in the past, and I'd like to see a fair and honest jam here.

It's alright to ask someone to play your game if you've played, rated, and gave feedback to their game. But blanket "rate for rate" callouts can really mess with ratings as people try to collect as many ratings as they can without playing/having their own game played.

If I find people posting blanket "rate for rate" posts here, they will be removed. If I find too much of that happening, the community tab will be removed entirely.

During the voting period, developers from the community who submitted games to the jam, will be rating other games submitted to the jam.

When the voting period ends, the judges will take a few days to go through the highest rated games and select the top 5 judges' picks.

You have to try and clean up your project and remove extra files to get it to run as a browser game, there's a quick way to remove unused resources from your game folder here:

If after following this and creating a new save folder for your game you still can't upload your game, export a desktop windows build for your game and upload that. Make sure to explain the reason why you had to do that on the itch page in the description, so people/moderators know what happened.

But try to clean up the project folder first, because people are far less likely to play/rate a game they need to download.

As RicoTV said, submit as early as you can, and update your game page with new version of your game as you go.

That way, if things go wrong, you don't need to stress as much, because you submitted "something" to the jam. (Even if it's not as good as you hoped it would be.)

You can update the itch page, thumbnail, and screenshots on your itch page after the submission deadline.

Just be sure that you don't touch the game file, because you could accidentally disqualify yourself from the jam.

Updated. Thanks for pointing it out. 👍

It's better to share the itch version of your game, so people will be able to vote on it.

If they play the gd.games version, you may not get any votes from those playthroughs.

(1 edit)

When uploading your game to gd.games, it's important to check your internet connection speed, and the size of your game. Games that are too large will definitely have a harder time being uploaded to any hosting platform because of how long it takes to upload the game.

But can you try again and share a screenshot of the full error message?

Why can't you change your file names?

Yes, you can edit your uploaded game as much as you need to, until the jam submission time ends.

You can also update your itch page to make it nice, and add a thumbnail and screenshots, after the jam ends as long as you don't touch your game file after the submission deadline. So don't stress about how your itch page looks, focus on the game getting uploaded before the submission date ends.

You can submit a game until the time limit of the jam runs out, the timer is on the main page of the jam.
https://itch.io/jam/gdevelop-big-game-jam-8

There is 1 day left in the jam.

Then you need to be extra careful, a lot of people over scope their first game. 😅

Good luck with your game. 👍

As we approach the mid-way point of the jam, it's important to start thinking about your game's scope, and what parts of your planned game could be cut out/not added if you start running out of time.

As you get closer to the end of the jam, you'll start to run into bugs/issues in your game that you never planned for. The best way to prepare for when that happens, is to know what parts of your planned game idea you can abandon and still have a "game" at the end of the jam.

Make sure to focus on the parts of your game that NEED to be in the final release, and then if you have time left after those are finished, you can add the parts that you think are the next most important for your game. 👍

Good luck with the remainder of the jam.
