This is a style guide to ensure that all proposals follow, more or less, the same conceptual and visual line. Nothing is mandatory, and you can, of course, present other proposals.

  • The purpose of the jam is to create characters for The Lantern. If you have an idea for a setting, a game reskin, locations, or anything else other than playable characters, try to introduce it into the game through a character (or save that awesome idea for another jam).
  • Each character submitted should have the character card and a brief introduction micro-story (one or two paragraphs are enough). If necessary, additional rules or clarifications can be added on another card (ideally, for double-sided printing).
  • The character's special ability can be a modification to the general rules, a bonus to certain rolls, a new mechanic for managing cards or resources, a change in locations or clues, something affecting the Journal, etc. Anything you can think of is valid.
  • If you believe an ability is too powerful, you can balance it with a cost, whether it's using inventory items, a status effect, a n action, or something else you can think of.
  • The character card should include the archetype's name, their special ability, and an accompanying image.
  • For the image, you can use anything you like, but if you want to maintain the game's aesthetic, use a black and white image with a strong chiaroscuro style.
  • You will have access to a Canva template and a PSD file for those of you using Photoshop, but you can use any software you want (or even do it by hand and take a picture, I won't stop you).
  • You can submit as many characters as you want. To submit the characters, create a new project on Itch, upload the files, publish the project, and add it to the Jam. You can use the micro-story text for the project page.
  • Use this community forum to ask questions and as a touchstone for your character, in case you want to get some opinions first. It is  always easier with a little help.

If you have any doubts or questions, feel free to reach out.
