Context

Fifty years ago, Portugal freed itself from the shackles of dictatorship. Soldiers marched, people took to the streets, and together, they brought down the oppressive regime. The revolution brought democracy, freedom of expression, and an end to colonial war.

Obviously, things weren't quite as straightforward — anything involving politics and society rarely is. But Freedom is very simple: either you have it or you don't. This JAM aims to celebrate FREEDOM and prevent it from being forgotten. After all, as you know, 1974 was a long time ago... This JAM does not aim to celebrate regimes or political movements.

Delivery

During the dictatorship, the state police (PIDE) had the authority to arrest citizens who spoke negatively about the government, questioned power, or even dared to think. Countless books, poems, records, films, and photographs were banned. Anything that suggested hope, peace or freedom was seen as a challenge to the regime, and that meant trouble.

For this JAM, we want something that would be confiscated by the PIDE. The content can be real or speculative and materialize in the form of an RPG, a comic book, an illustration, a text, etc. Creations of your own that did not exist before this JAM.

FAQ

> Do I have to make something historical? 

Not at all. You have to make something related to Freedom. It's true that the JAM was inspired by the Portuguese historical context, but you can use fiction to address the subject - just like Neil Gaiman says: "Fiction is the lie that tells the truth."

> I'm not Portuguese. Does it make sense for me to participate? 

Of course it does! Freedom has no nationality, gender, or skin tone. If you believe you have the right to Freedom and that it should be celebrated, then participate.

> Can I use AI? 

Please don't. If there were AI during 'Estado Novo', any output generated would be controlled by the state - it wouldn't promote disruption and, much less, freedom. Also, considering that the algorithm was fed without the consent of artists and creators (depriving them of the freedom to choose to be part of it), it would be somewhat controversial to use this tool when the central theme is Freedom. As Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr. said: "your right to swing your arms ends just where the other man's nose begins."

> I'm not very familiar with the theme. Can you help me with some bibliography?

 Forty-eight years of dictatorship provided plenty of material and content. There were so many episodes, places and participants - victims and collaborators of the regime. It's impossible to list them all. The "Carnation Revolution" entry on Wikipedia is a good place to start. And you can always use your browser to search for "25th April Portugal."

Há 50 anos atrás, Portugal libertou-se dos grilhões da ditadura. Os soldados marcharam, o povo saiu à rua e, juntos, fizeram cair o regime opressor. A revolução trouxe a democracia, a liberdade de expressão e o fim da guerra colonial.  

Obviamente que as coisas não foram assim tão lineares — tudo o que envolve política e sociedade tende a ser algo complexo, com muitos matizes. Mas a Liberdade é muito simples: ou a temos, ou não a temos. Esta JAM procura celebrar a LIBERDADE e prevenir o seu esquecimento. Como sabes, 1974 foi há muito tempo... Esta JAM não tem como objetivo celebrar regimes ou movimentos políticos. 

Entrega

Durante a ditadura, a polícia do estado (PIDE) tinha autoridade para prender cidadãos que falassem mal do governo, que questionassem o poder ou que ousassem sequer pensar. Inúmeros livros, poemas, discos, filmes e fotografias eram proibidos. Tudo o que sugerisse esperança, paz ou liberdade era visto como uma afronta ao regime e isso era sinónimo de problemas.

Para esta JAM queremos algo que, pudesse ser confiscado pela PIDE.  O conteúdo pode ser real ou especulativo e materializar-se sob a forma de um RPG, uma banda-desenhada, uma ilustração, um texto, etc. As tuas próprias criações que não existiam antes desta JAM.

> Tenho de fazer algo histórico?

Nada disso. Tens de fazer algo relacionado com Liberdade. É verdade que a JAM foi inspirada pelo contexto histórico português, mas podes usar a ficção para abordar o assunto - tal como Neil Gaiman diz: " ficção é a mentira que conta verdade." 

> Não sou português. Faz sentido eu participar nisto?

Claro que faz! A Liberdade não tem nacionalidade, nem género ou tom de pele. Se achas que tens direito à Liberdade e que esta deve ser celebrada, então participa.

> Posso usar AI (Inteligência Artificial)?

Por favor não o faças. Se houvesse AI no Estado Novo, qualquer output gerado seria controlado pelo estado - não promoveria disrupção e, muito menos, liberdade. Além disso, tendo em conta que o algoritmo foi alimentado sem consentimento de artistas e criadores, (privando-os da liberdade de escolha em fazer parte do mesmo), seria um pouco controverso usar esta ferramenta quando o tema central é a Liberdade. Como disse Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr.: "a tua liberdade para rodar os braços termina onde o nariz do outro começa".

48 anos de ditadura fornecem imenso material e conteúdo. Houve tantos episódios, locais e intervenientes — vítimas e colaboradores do regime. É impossível enumerá-los a todos.
