Charging commissions for collaborative indie projects?

I'm a pixel artist and I've landed a gig. The project seems exciting to draw, my type of art almost like I'm working on my own indie idea but I don't have to do anything but the art, but should I charge for the art? My client is a college student with a low budget like most indies. I like to see new indie games getting out there but most indies don't have a big budgets to hire artists and I have a lot of guilt charging them. If I do ask for a minimum hourly wage, we usually can't work together. How do I go about this?

I am a game developer who also happens to be an art hobbyist, so I always make art for my own game and therefore have to admit that I don't have any experience working with another artist. However, as a fellow artist myself, I think you should charge for the art. I don't understand why you would say something like "I don't have to do anything but the art." You shouldn't under-appreciate your skills. Art is one of the most important aspects of a game and sometimes could be even more time-consuming than programming. If you hire a programmer for your game, do you think you should pay them to work for you? If so, I don't see why a programmer shouldn't pay an artist to work on their game. If you really care less about getting paid, a possible solution I would suggest is to charge your client by each piece, instead of applying a minimum hourly wage.  Again I apologize for not being able to offer further insights since I've never worked with other artists, but I hope my thoughts can at least give you some ideas.

That actually makes a lot of sense. If I undercharge my work now, what makes me think that I will charge reasonably next time? That way I'll never grow. It's kind of an undervaluing loop mentality that I have to get rid of. I've always been doing pixel art as a hobby for a few years so I got used to drawing for fun, but my long term goal is to make a living from it so it makes sense that the undervaluing has to stop at some point.
