DEVLOG UPDATE 05/11/2020

Hi! Its been some time since my last devlog, its benn a tough couple of weeks, but things are moving forward.

Some new things:

-WE HAVE SOME MUSIC! the last gamedev Manukapp offered to make some music for the game and he already delivered a GREAT song for the main menu. I already put it in the menu and it sinchronizes nicely with the new splash screen. I honestly like how it turned out a lot!

-We also have some new enemies, fully animated and implemented on the game: The ogre, the gnome, the bat, the rat and the rat horde. I'm not telling you hoy to beat them, you figure them out on your own ;) (I hope the archer isnt completely useless anymore lol)

-With the new enemies I have completed the difficulty progression. It now starts slower and increases difficulty with time. It reaches top difficulty realtively fast tho and it is quite more difficult than before.

-I got rid of the old static tutorial. Now the first time you play the game you start an active tutorial with some very stupid lore. (you can replay the tutorial from the new options menu if you want)

-I added a lot of UI. An options menu with credits, the option to turn off the sound, etc, a highscore system and a pause menu.

WHATS LEFT TO DO:

I finally decided to make a single final boss. When you defeat it, you unlock an endless, harder mode just to beat your highscore. It will be pretty difficult to make, but I think with that, some more sound effects and the rest of the music the game will be finished!! After release I still plan to add more enemies and backgrounds, but I thin for now its playable and fun.

Maybe i'll release a second demo so you can chech the difficulty and give me some feedback on that.

Thanks for reading! :)

DEVLOG UPDATE 04/21/2020

Its been already two full weeks since this first drawing:

I can't belive its been just two weeks, it seems a lot more! This damn quarantine and social isolation lol.

I've been having a blast making this game, I know there is still a lot of work to do, but i'm enjoying every second! This is my first proyect on the page and almost my first game ever! (I have previusly made three very crapy games since december 2019 while I was learning the basics of unity and c# with Udemy and brackeys tutorials on youtube) and the community is very kind an supportive. I wanted to say thanks specialy to Enriketi, 40wattstudio and TheSneak for the support and feedback! You guys rock!

What's new:

Its been only two days since the firs demo so there is not much new stuff. I added sound effects for the attacks of the three heroes, for the monsters dying, the shield deflecting fireballs, and the gold bag. Now Im working on the music...... EVERYTHING I MAKE SONDS LIKE GARBAGE! So I expect it will be a while before I can make something I dont hate..

And thats it for now! Thank yoy for reading!!

DEVLOG UPDATE 04/19/2020 (First DEMO build)

DOWNLOAD IT HERE: https://sepigamedev.itch.io/final-fanta-three

This was my first build on unity and I had a LOT of problems! Unfortunately I didnt have time to add sounds or music.

Is there any unity user that can help me out?

There are things that work perfectly fine on the editor but not on the build! For instance the fricking tutorial... On the editor it works fine, but on the build the fire-ball and the arrow goes flying as soon as you enter and then they cant be instanciated! I tried reimporting all assets, re-building it many times and nothing seems to work!

I am VERY noob with this, I know, but I could really use some help. I dont understand whats wrong :(

DEVLOG UPDATE 04/16/2020

So the thing is... I want to draw a title screen for the game, but "Fantasy rush: not an RPG" is a stupid name and I hate it lol. I need a new name :(

Also, new name or not, I hope to have a playable demo this sunday!!!

Whats new:

-You can now lose!

-I drew the GAME OVER screen (It still needs to be animated)

-Score system implemented!

-You can already play the game and its super fun! (at least for me)

Whats next:

-Im starting to look for cool gameboy sounds to put in the game (if you know where I can get some please let me know)

-I want to animate the GAME OVER screen

-I also want to make a tilte screen, but the name I have for the game is stupid :(

Thank you for reading as always!

DEVLOG UPDATE 04/13/2020

Say hello to these new enemies!

-THE GHOST: The mage can one-shot him, but the knights sword pass right through him without making damage!

-THE MUMMY: The mage can kill him, but it takes him FIVE fireballs! The knight can kill him in one hit.

-THE SKELETON: His shield resists magic attacks. Only the knight can kill him.

-THE MONEY BAG: It comes flying, so only the archer cann get it. It currently does nothing, but its super fun to time your shot in order to hit it! :P

WHATS NEW:

-All three enemies (and the gold bag) are implemented. The walk towards you with walking animation included and they can all be killed (they cant kill you yet though)

-Backround has been animated with those ugly looking fire on the torches. I may change the sprites later cause i dont like them, but they really help to give some life to the enviroment.

And thats it. Its not much, but im juggling between this and my home office work :( Also this four colour limitation is driving me nuts! I hope the game boy looks are worth it.

COMING SOON:

-The next thing I will try to implement is the monster random spawner, but I have no idea how to make that work. Im such a noob :P

-A score system. Each monster will give you a certain score and the money bags too.

-Sound effects. Anyone knows where I can find cool game boy sounds for free?

And thats it for this devlog. Thanks a lot for reading and I really apreciate the support. Special thanks to Enriketti and 40wattstudio for the support and advices!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

THE GAME:

(solo dev)

For the moment, FANTASY RUSH: not an RPG (name still in beta) is just a quirky, classic Game Boy styled, two buttoned mini-game.

You take control of these three classic fantasy heroes: an archer, a mage and a knight (totally not a cliche), to kick  some randomly generated waves of monster butts!

THE GAMEPLAY:

The main mechanic of the mini-game is: One button to change the character in a secuence (Knight, Mage, Archer) and one button to attack. Thats prety much it, you change characters and you attack your foes.

THE KNIGHT:

He can obviusly attack meelee only, so he is the most limited of the three, but don´t think he is weak. He can one-shot every enemy (as long as it´s in ftont of him), and his mighty shield can deflect all enemy projectile, so he is great for defense.  His powerfull sword is also the only weapon that can reach the floor, so only he can kill small enemies.

THE MAGE:

He can shoot fire balls bro! His attack is not as powerfull as the knights, but he can attack from a safe distance. "Lets just spam fireball and get this thig over with already" he thought when he joined the adventure. Unfortunately for him there are enemies with magic shields invulnerable to his spells. He can´t attack smaller or flying enemies either.

THE ARCHER:

He is the only one that can kill flying enemies and get the flying rewards. The whole team would be absolutely screwed without him, but he is completely vulnerable to evething right in front of his face. You have to take care of him.

THE AESTHETICS:

The whole game will be mouse drawn with a classic Game Boy four colour palette. All grafics are made by me on gimp. The image above is the only background I have yet, but the plan is making at least ten very quirky and bizzare backgrounds (like the moon or under water) and spawning them randomly with each game.  I am also pretty happy with that classic Game Boy frame I made. I stll have a lot to draw though!

WHAT IS DONE, WHAT TO DO:

DONE:

-The main character mechanics its almost done. You can change character with the space bar, attack with enter and all three characters are fully animated.

-I have only one enemy drawn (not animated yet), only one background drawn (not animated yet), and the classic Game Boy frame.

TO DO:

-Draw and animate A LOT more enemies.

-Draw and animate at least nine more backgrounds.

-Make and implement the core mechanic of the random spawners.

-Completely make the whole UI, menus, etc.

-Making ALL sound FX and music.

-Once the mini-game is done, I would love to do a STORY MODE with pre-made waves, bosses and a quirky story on par with the aestethics of the game, but that is jumping waay forward. As soon as I finish the mini-game it will be published here for free as it is.

A LITTLE ABOUT ME:

In december 2019 I didn´t know how to code (or anything about programming), I didn´t know how to draw (or how to even use Photoshop or Gimp), I didn´t know how to make animations, I didn´t know how to make music at all and I barely knew how to speak english... Now I still don´t know how to do any of those, but hey, at least im trying my best right? One thing is for sure, I really, REALLY love videogames.

When 2020  started I decided I was fed up with my desk job and started learning my passion in my free time (hopely in a future i can quit this dreadfull job). When COVID-19 quarantine started i suddenly had all this time I didnt know what to do with, so I started dedicating myself completely to learning unity and C#.

I would apreciate every piece of advice and critique, and I sincerly hope you like the idea and that you play and enjoy the game when its out :)

Thank you very much for your support!

(+1)
I like the way it looks, the boy's aesthetic looks great!! Keep working men!! I will be waiting to play it!!
(+1)

Thanks! I will definitly let you know when its out!

(+2)

Very impressive for just starting late last year! Looks like it would be a great game to port over to the Clockwork Pi.

(+1)

Thank you! I really struggle with coding and the drawings are taking much longer than they should, but in time everything will run faster I think.

(+1)

Coding can definitely be a challenge. My strategy (so far) has been to do at least one little improvement a day. The key thing is to prevent yourself from getting bored/disinterested in your project. Slow and steady gets things done.

(+1)

Thanks a lot for the advice! I will most definitly try to do an improvement every day! The plan for tomorrow is to draw the animation for the background (just some flickering fire for the torches), draw an extra frame for the knights animation and making at least two new enemies. Tomorrow will be a drawing day! Thanks again for the support, I really apretiate it :B

Playable demo coming out on sunday!

(+1)

Since your game has 3 playable characters, I would pick a name that revolves around "Tri" or the number 3.

(+1)

How about "Final Fanta-three" I am very bad at this xD

(+1)

Hey that actually sounds pretty good! Cheesy but immediately gets the idea of what your game is about.

(+1)

Final Fanta-three it is lol. At least for the demo, it can allways change later. Thanks for your help!

(+1)

Yep, you can always change it later.

(+1)

Oh man, I really want to come up with a name for this!

I don't think I can without playing the game first tho.  xD

Oh well, guess I can wait till Sunday.  :)

This comment makes me really happy! And also a little bit scared if im honest. Shit just got real yo! For the moment as suggested by 40wattstudio I´ll go with "FINAL FANTA-THREE" but it can (and probably will) change in the future so I will be waiting for your suggestion. Thanks for reading!

First demo is out if you want to give it a shot :D

(+1)

Played the game!

I'm unsure as to whether you would like feedback posted in here or not or if you have a thread specially for that.  But if you'd like to hear some, just ask!  :)

As for a name idea, how about something like "Retro-Trio".

Or maybe "Dungeon Trio".

Just need something that gets across the aesthetic and mechanic with as few words as possible.

Have fun!  :)

Thanks for playing! I would love to have your feedback, Im very new at this and I want to learn. As for the name, I liked "The retro trio", could also be "the gameboy trio" although that may be copyrighted. But I also have been thinking of a name along those lines.

Thanks again for playing and commenting!

(+1)

Ha!  Glad you liked the name idea lol xD

As for feedback, here are a few things I think you did well.

  *  The game is super simple, took me less then 30 seconds to understand the tutorial and get into a game understanding fully what I needed to do.

  *  Aesthetics are consistent and charming.

  *  The screen was clear and didn't feel too busy, I could understand what I was meant to pay attention to easily.

Here's some things I reckon you could change / improve.

  *  Have right and left arrow change the character, and something like space bar to attack.  I got a bit frustrated at having to cycle through the archer to get to the character I needed.

  *  Archer needs more use, I get that you can get extra points with it, but I think there needs to be an enemy only he can stop, maybe there is one a bit later than what I got up to in the game.

  *  Sound and music would improve the experience.  I'm guessing that is something you have planned already however.

Good luck with your game mate!

Have a good day!  :)

First of all, as a non artist Im really glad you liked my drawings, I was a little worried about them.

For the controls I chose left and right arrows thinking about porting the game to android in a future and having only two buttons made it easier to play with your thumbs (In my head at least xD), but maybe you are right, it is kind of unconfortable to cycle through the party.

Archer REALLY does need more use, and no, there is nothing else later hahah. I was planning to add a lot more enemies tho, I just wanted to see if the core game worked and if the mechanic was fun before doing that.

Ive been thinking in three more enemies especifically for the archer: 1) a spider that falls from above and at a certain point stops and starts shooting or something (the archer could kill the spider, destroy the spiderweb "bullets" and maybe the knigt could also protect the team from the bullets with his shield idk). 2) Some kind of bird that comes flying and at some point of its trajectory attacks  (only the archer can kill it) 3) this is my favorite, an ogre twice the size of the other enemies that can only be killed hitting him in the eye or face (only the archer can shoot in that angle).

But yeah I was thinking of adding more enemies for all characters (maybe for some you have to combine  your heros, like destroying a protecting field with a fireball and then killing the monster with the knight). The idea is to introduce new enemies little by little to add on the difficulty.

And Im working on sound effects right now  before everything else. I intended to put some on the demo, but I had some issues with the build :( The music will be a lot more complicated though, everything a make sounds just awfull!

Thanks a lot for the feedback man, it was really helpfull!

(+1)

Wow men, it was a lot of fun, I played several rounds non-stop and i made a record of 4480, nothing bad ah?? But I was very nervous with the enemies coming out and I made a wrong attack XD
I loved the boy´s aesthetics, it gives it a great touch, i really enjoyed it. I would like to see several more enemies in the future, more than anything so that the archer can help the party and I would like some boss battles. You are clearly on the right track.
Congratulations on your first playable demo on itch.io
Hopefully you can continue developing it

Thanks! I Will definitly continue developing! 4480 is a great score! Glad you enjoyed it. I promise the archer will be more usefull in the future lol. About the boss fights i'm not planing to add them on a near future, mabey on a story mode, but theres a lot of work to  do before that

Thanks a lot for the feedback!

(+1)

Two full weeks of development already!!

How long do you plan on working on this game?

(+1)

I dont really know, this is my first serious project. I tried to keep my scope as low as possible but I know I still have a lot of work to do.

(+1)

Heh heh, I was thinking the same thing for my project. I'll be done in about 3 weeks! I thought. Now here I am over two months later and still not finished yet. Definitely keep your scope low, but don't be surprised if that scope expands.

Hey cool game! I played the Demo! Really fun and simple but tense game, I love the design! I got to 7490! That round I realised the flying things just fly by, do they give you more points when you hit them then?

I noticed you don't have any music to it, I've read you're making sound effects but I could help you with the soundtrack, I'm a music composer.

This is my portfolio so you know what I can do, these are the games I've worked on before.

Let me know if you're interested!

My email: leomullerrodriguez@gmail.com

Leo

Hey! Im glad you like it! 7490 is a great record, I think its the second best of the people that playtested it! Yeah, the flying bags dont kill you, but killing them makes you 200 points (more than any monster). Im currently working on adding flying enemies that can kill you though.

About the music.. Are you serious?! that would be awsome!! Im really, REALLY struggling with the music. I spent a lot of time yesterday trying to learn some music theory on youtube just to make something not even good, but that doesnt make my ears bleed. But music isnt like programming, its not a skill you can pick up with a few videos and keep improving it on the go. Maybe if I keep practicing, but for now I really suck. I will send you a mail later today.

Thanks again for playing and commenting!

Oh sweet! I'm pretty proud of myself now with that score haha.

Anyway jokes aside, do email me with any musical references, and we can continue to communicate through there! Yeah I'd love to compose some music for the game!

Thanks for being interested!

(+1)

Today I played again and I was able to beat my record !! I made 14660 points !!! It is a fun game to warm your hand before playing CS. XD XD

Daaamn 14660 is a new record I think! Wait until you play it with sound and new enemies ;)

(+1)

Back on the game!

Great news! I already want to play it, the new hordes sound more than fun and exciting. I like the archer to take center stage XD. And in relation to the tutorial I would like to see that new format. Keep working like this, we want that new demo !!!!

I hope you are not tired of playing it and playing it and playing it by now hahaha. You've been of great help, thank you!

(+1)

The game is coming out on saturday!!

(+1)

Awesome! Looking forward to it!

(+1)

Thanks man, don't forget to check the credits ;)

Game is out now!

Awesome! I just tried it out and left a comment on your game page. :)
