How do you actually "promote" a game

i've read many topics, i think during that i even became a writer- anyways, unless you message a content creator, or a dozen of them (which in my case didnt go well) so, now what-
well i did try promoting my game in various places but yk i have to keep up that nonchalant personality,

but still- nothing. the game before was in development and i didnt think much, well i couldnt think much. have you seen how much updates i make in a month?
so yea, content creators didnt work, new and popular is filled with...nudity and i just- i cant find a way.
so, tell me how you lot found or how game developers normally find a way, since im new to development generally.

Firstly, the game is good, so this is not an issue. You are indexed.

My first suggestion is to add a web version. Tons more people will play the web version, than the downloadable version. The only way people even download my game is a charity bundle.

Secondly, using reddit.com and other socials are helpful. The itch.io community can also help, but not as much. However, devlogs only do anything once you have followers. They are useless right now.

Lastly, it can take a while. You can't make it to "New and Popular" anymore, because the game is not new. You will have to aim for reaching the Popular list for the smaller tags.

Also, check that your sensitive/adult content is off to avoid the adult stuff on new and popular.

Yo thanks for the tips, yea i'll try and i have a few friends helping with promotion/trailer so uhh- also I can't make a browser version sadly because of several reasons but when i released a huge update once people saw me on new and popular! So that's a thing! Also idk if maturity is on or off ill check. Thanks!

I think it was meant that you in your settings need to turn off maturity, else you will see those games while browsing.

(If you actually have a game with sensitive content, you cannot turn it off. A feature that often gets complaints.)

Oh, and redo your css please. Your page is not useable. You obfuscate the mouse cursor. That is not allowed. You can't use the css to hinder any User Interface features of Itch. If you make me miss my click, because I cannot accurately see where I will click, that is a very bad thing.

Oh yeah the mouse, I'm trying to calculate the offset and even in the game this was a headache but I probably forgot about it cuz I got comfortable, anyways thanks!

You can't make it to "New and Popular" anymore

New & Popular is the same as Popular with only a bit more emphasis on New. Just look at the number of games. It is the same number.

Popular has also a historical and a current component.

Aiming for target audience tags is a good strategy in my opinion. Also, with only a few hundred games in a tag combination a game would even be still visible in recent even if it were the oldes game of them. 200 games is only 6 pages. That can be scrolled in a few seconds.

We run a lot of listings on itch and we log where every visit comes from, so here are the actual numbers instead of a guess. They are for asset packs and small games, so treat this as a shape rather than as your shape.

Across 175 listings we have taken 529 visits from outside itch in total. 402 of those, so 76 percent, came from reddit. Everything else combined produced almost nothing. We posted 299 times to X and Bluesky and Mastodon and gained 14 followers between the three. That is the most useful thing we learned, and it is narrower than the usual advice: it is not socials, it is reddit specifically, and the others cost the same hours for nothing.

One measurement detail that matters if you go looking at your own numbers. Reddit arrives under two different referrer strings, www.reddit.com and android-app://com.reddit.frontpage/, and the second was 12 percent of ours. The dashboard referrer table only shows the top 20 rows, so it undercounts reddit, and it can show no external row at all while external visits really are arriving. That table is exactly why we had our own external arrival written down as zero when it wasn't.

On devlogs being useless before you have followers, our own numbers disagree. One devlog produced 9 referred visits in a month when every external social channel combined produced zero. A devlog puts the page back on Recently updated, and that surface doesn't care how many followers you have.

Last thing, and this one is from the pinned indexing FAQ on this board rather than from us. The review queue is prioritised on genuine traffic to the page coming from outside itch. So the reddit post and the indexing wait are the same job, not two separate ones.
