The death of your uncle does not seem accidental: what does disfigurement have to do with drowning? It does not look like the fish were that hungry for the man's face.  You decide to dig deeper into this story and end up finding more than you hoped for. Your experience with fishing will never be the same.

"The Thing in the Lake" is the (provisory) title of the game I'm currently working on for the #FishingHorrorJam. I hope it gives you the idea that there is something in a lake :-P
It is a pixel horror game made with Bitsy. It is an adventure/interactive fiction kind of game in which you explore and interact with objects/people.

For a while, I've been wanting to make a game with a creature in it. As I brainstormed ideas for this project, I found a sketch of a "thing" I drew in 2018. Because I quite liked it back then, I decided to use it in this game and give the creature in the sketch a full purpose.

As you can see, the poor thing did not have a complete body back then, and because the game has to do with fishing, I thought... why not create some kind of creepy mermaid/merman? And that is how the creature was reborn.

But the creature is not the protagonist of this game (I hope that is not a spoiler!). You play as someone investigating their uncle's "mysterious" death. You explore a park that leads you to a lake. From there, it's up to you to find out more ;-)

I'm looking forward to playing this game!

I really like it when you make pixel horror games.

Can't wait to see this creature in action!

Thank you for your support! ( / ; w ;) /

The game will have 2 main colors. I kinda like the ones I'm currently using, but I may change them later, let's see how it goes!

A little more about the game: your goal, as the player and main character, is to explore a park, find out about stuff as you interact with people/objects. There will be a campsite, a picnic area and a lake, of course.

I still have a lot to do, but I'm really happy with the progress so far!

Sounds really cool. Reminds me of the Metrovania genre of games.

Thank you! :D

I like the colors you're using. The black and green match the "thing in the lake" vibes.

"Thing in the lake" vibes *o* thank you!

I'm thinking of creating some kind of color "gradient" for the scenes: as you go deeper into the game, the scenes get darker...

Problem is, I hate choosing colors Dx I usually start making a game with some random color, maybe one that has something to do with the main theme. But I'm getting a bit tired of the one I'm currently using (#80a36a).
Gotta choose a new palette soon! ;_;

UPDATE:

Something you could do is add a "gradient over time" script that darkens your color palette ever so slightly every time a new discovery is made. It would be subtle, and wouldn't be noticed to much until you wanted it to be. Since I don't know what language you are programming in though, I can't tell you exactly what to do.

Because I’m using Bitsy, I’m not coding anything, I’ll just choose the colors “manually” I guess. But thank you for the feedback :D

It's been a while ;_;
I'm pleased to say that the game is 50% done!
The other half is already planned and I'm confident it won't take much for the whole game to be complete.
Here's a gif for you:

(Still working on the colors).
Gonna finish this project before the due time, I swear >:-)

New devlog coming soon! It includes a gif ;-)

Finishing the last scenes!

(I think I'm okay with the color palettes now ^^)

The next steps are: draw the cover for the game + find some background music.

ALMOST done! T_T

I love planning everything before starting a project, but I feel like the ending went a bit off script xD
Hope it's for the best...
One last gif for you:

The game is 100% done and so, this is the last devlog :'-)

I confess I thought the game would be longer, but that's okay. The gameplay is about 15-20 minutes long, and it took me exactly 23 days to complete it (felt longer though!).

In the end, I decided to leave it without a background music. As it's a text-based (horror) adventure, I guess it's better that way...

I'm proud of myself for having completed this project, I put a lot of effort and it really paid off! :-)

Well, I guess that's all! Hope you like it as much as I do! Now, I just need to draw a cover and finish editing the game page. I'll launch the game today or tomorrow, we'll see!

Thank you for those who read this devlog and followed me till now :-D I appreciate it!

Have a nice day, everyone :3
