Monthly(?) Bitsy jam? :D

Pardon me if it's already been done, but I feel a (monthly?) Bitsy game jam would be super fun and generate more interest in the tool. Yea or nay? I'd love to see more games created with this thing.

EDIT: Aaagh, this topic's in the wrong subforum. Oops.

YESSS I love this idea ~~ what would you want it to look like? should there be themes? (anyone else feel free to weigh in, too)

(p.s. don't worry about the sub-forum - this is a fine place for this conversation)

what do you mean by "what would it look like?" do you mean what would the jam signup page look like?

maybe I should have said "how would you want the jam to be structured?" the question of how long the deadline should be is a good example

In terms of deadline, do you like the idea of the deadline being based on a hard date, or a number of working hours? I feel like giving people, say, 48 cumulative hours might rake in more participants than limiting submission hours to a literal weekend... but then, I don't have any hard data to back me up lol.

What d'y'all think?

I think that giving each month a theme would be a great idea! I don't know how the theme would be decided but it would make the monthly jams interesting. Also, does "monthly" mean you're given a month to make a game, or is it a specific time that would happen every month.

Hmm, maybe the theme could be randomly selected from a pool? Perhaps voted on, if the jams generate enough interest...?

Anyway, I meant 'monthly' as in 'specific time', but if a month-long dev period sounds good to people I don't see why that couldn't be a thing too!

I think a big pool of themes would be the best way to go. A pool of 20 or something like that?

Yeah, that sounds about right. The jam organizers could cobble them together with input from the community, or maybe the community would submit their own themes and everyone would vote on the top 20 contenders? It depends how many people become invested in the event.

Hmm. Details, details. I like the pool idea though.

I like the pool of theme ideas. We could start just by brainstorming some here. And then ask people who participate in the first jam to submit ideas, and grow the pool that way.

As for timing. What about a once-a-month jam with a one-week window. That way people have plenty of time, but there's also a gap between jams.

Sounds like a plan. :) A one-week window seems the most comfortable -- I'm personally unable to do weekend jams with my schedule, so this fits me perfectly. :D

Brainstorming, brainstorming... are we gonna use one-word prompts as themes, or proper concepts? I'm cool with either!

For themes I think either or both is fine ~~ whatever feels right to you ~~

I will start a brainstorming comment! feel free to reply and add to it :)

some theme ideas

  • memory
  • what I had for breakfast
  • a secret
  • pen pals
  • if on a winter's night a traveler (interesting title of an italo calvino book)
  • labyrinth
  • mirrors
  • riding in the back seat of a car
  • daydream on a hot day
  • high five
these are just a few ideas, and I don't know how good they are, but I hope it gets the ball rolling! feel free to reply to this comment with your own ideas :)

Here are some ideas as well!

  • experiment
  • infection
  • the DMV
  • Very Important.
  • wrestling
  • radio silence
  • snack run
  • giant
  • preformance
(+1)

ahh "radio silence" is very good

Hmm, let's see!

  • Alien abduction
  • Surrealism
  • ... and we never looked back
  • Poetry
  • Repetition, repetition, repetition
  • Meta
  • oddly unremarkable
  • alter ego
  • rhubarb
These are a little nonsensical, but sometimes nonsensical prompts produce some good stuff! Looking forward to more suggestions if anyone has them. I have a few favourites from you guys' lists myself.

I like the idea of "oddly unremarkable" a lot

Thank you! I think we've got some winners here.

Where would we advertise an event like this? Twitter?

I have no idea. Twitter would be one way, is there a way to announce a game jam via itch.io itself?

(+1)

somehow I missed these recent posts! nice theme suggestions :) I also like "oddly unremarkable"

we can announce the jam on twitter for sure, but we can also host the jam on itch.io and I think we can post in the general itch.io forum

why don't we organize a jam for the last week of next month (April)?

Ayy, that's a great idea. :> Last week of April sits well with me! I don't have much of a social media presence but I'll help with advertising as best I can.

I know that there are some devs on mastodon so when the time comes I'll also try getting the word out there

sounds like a plan! thank you both :) I will set up the jam soon. anyone have a preference on what theme we pick from the list?

I took my favorite 2 from each list in no particular order then rolled a regular die twice and I got a 3, which is "... and we never looked back", and I got a 2 which is "riding in the back seat of a car", so those are my picks

Hi! I've made the jam page for this month! https://itch.io/jam/the-bitsy-breakfast-jam

I decided to go with "breakfast" as the theme this time, but I'm going to keep all other the theme suggestions handy for future jams :)

Also, I opened up submissions for the rest of the month, so feel free to post your games!

Thanks for suggesting doing this, I think it will be fun!

Ayy, awesome! Sorry I've been absent; film school is absolutely bananas near the end of term. Looking forward to partaking!

no problem! good luck finishing the term :) look forward to seeing your jam creation
