Filtering by language

I know it's possible to filter by language on itch, but the process for doing so is ridiculously difficult.  There is no way to do so from the main games page.  There is not even a way to do so from the Directory.  Instead, I have to do this:

  • Somehow find a game, any game, in the language I want.  Sometimes I can use the language name as either a search term or a tag.
  • Click on More Information.
  • Hope the developer of the game filled out the language metadata.  (Only a minority of developers seem to have done this, even for games in minority languages.  I had to look at several Welsh games before I found one that actually listed the language as a language instead of a tag.)
  • Click on the language.
  • Skip over the all the games whose developers thought they could be clever and select all languages, even though the game itself is mostly textless.
  • Even changing the UI language doesn't change this.  I have to jump through hoops to find a German game with my UI language set to German.

Surely the user experience can be improved here.  Am I the only person who cares about this?

You're not the only one, and I agree with what you're saying. I also think a menu that allows filtering by language would be a good idea.

A tip: when I want to search for games in another language, I use the URL:

itch.io/games/lang-<CODE>

Where CODE is the 2-letter ISO code.

To search in German, it would be:

itch.io/games/lang-de

For Spanish:

itch.io/games/lang-es

The great thing is that when you're on the games page with the language selected, any other filters you use are automatically added to the language filter.

Thanks for pointing out this situation.

I'm in the process of adding new languages support to my games. I'll make sure the give them the proper language flags.

Hallo mein Freud,

I have several games, and some of them are fully translated into Spanish. The available languages are even reflected in the thumbnails. I am learning German, my mother was German and I have citizenship rights through descent. I would gladly translate my games into my mother tongue as well.

The problem I see is that translation can be very tedious in many engines. On top of that, German UI text does not take up the same space as English, so you have to adjust the UI and UX. And to make things even more complicated, the main language on itch is English.

To top it all off, without even promoting myself hahaha, I am working on a game about Germany, the second one I have made. In this one, the dialogues are originally in German and then translated into English. I am sure there are more like this out there, but you cannot find them.
