Yes, you will get Gameover if you lose a combat, but you only have to start from the nearest SavePoint. And if you feel that you're losing, you can try to escape the battle to avoid being Gameover (except of Boss fight, almost every fight can be escaped with success rate up to 75%)
You can also avoid encountering Enemies by holding Shift while traveling on map =D
