Why and How can we support indie creators in this economy.

Hello everyone, I am posting here because it's a question that has been going around my head for a while. I'll try to keep it short.

Not too long ago, people were able to afford much more with the money they had. Buying many games, supporting many creators they liked. However today it feels like even basic things like fast food is treated like a financially irresponsible decision from how expensive it is. 

Is it fair to ask players to bare the financial weight of supporting games on itch? Is there anything else they could do differently? Or devs could do differently? Ads isn't really an option in my opinion because it rely on visibility and independent creators often doesn't have that. (And they are annoying to everyone)

Personally, I have bought a few assets, gave some tips, and still feel like it probably didn't make a difference. I tried to be consistently playing games on the most recent page and give feedback, but is it enough? What is enough?

So in other words, is there anything we can do creators/players to make it more viable environment to all? Am I alone feeling that way?

For me, I like the idea of seeing games as art.

I think, looking at things from this perspective, you tend to see different qualities in a work.

After all… art can be as simple (or as complex) as an object positioned cleverly where it creates an abstract mental/visual distortion.

Yes I totally agree, but it circles back to what I am saying.  how can we support said art since financial is rarely an option anymore.  I want to support artists and creators, but I feel like the means to support them so they can continue doing it are less and less options. You see what I mean?


Edit: I am not saying everyone should support. Everyone has their reasons. I am trying to brainstorm if there is any means to support creators I haven't or we haven't thought of collectively.

I think my answer would be: besides the possibility to pay for a work, there’s usually going to be that social aspect too - where a creator will probably still enjoy people playing their games (even if it’s the free ones).

Plus, I think things kinda cycle around, where not everyone’s going to be able to afford to support creators at any given time, but the ones who have money and are able to… do. And even some of the ones who can’t pay immediately, might still do it in a couple of years.

Agreed, as I have mentioned I am daily going to the most-recent and leaving feedback whenever I can and sharing to people that may be interested. I just sometimes feel like I could do more to support indie creators overall but I don't know what or how.

And for people able to support financially, I also think it's less frequent, but that is perhaps just an impression from deductions of the overall market/world currently.

Sharing sounds like a pretty good idea, too. (Some complain about reach.)

I think the most practical way to support indie creators is just by actually using and sharing their work. Buying their games, leaving reviews, or even just recommending them to friends makes a big difference. Financial support helps, of course, but engagement and visibility are just as important. In this economy, small, consistent actions from the community are what keep creators going.

I agree it is the current way of doing it and perhaps the best yet, but I wonder if there is angles to it that wasn't thought of. I personally do my best to play and share daily and support financially when I can, but I don't feel like it's enough. I want to do more, but I don't know how

As said above, devs know what they’re getting into when they make a game and most often don’t expect revenue from it. But yeah, we’d be happy with people playing and sharing them. Good to rate, give reviews and spread the word.

But actually, if you do want to put a little more in, perhaps according to cynical metrics, post on Reddit about games you like. Badger YouTubers, commenting on games they should play. Sometimes it’s taken by them in a different way than a developer asking a YouTuber if they’re interested in playing their game. YouTubers may often be doing it for the views and won’t play a game unless there is demand for it. And smaller devs get more exposure if those YouTuber’s audience grows as well, so supporting them is supporting devs slightly.(YouTuber/streamer letsplays, video essayists, top ten lists.) like and reply to comments you see praising games you like and amplify them. It’s derisory but it all contributes to a little wind in the sails on the digital profile etc.

The YouTubers aspect is an idea I didn't think of as much, but perhaps indeed sending games I found as gems to YouTubers could indeed be an idea 


For info, since it seems to be unclear, I am asking this as the side of a consumer, not dev. As a consumer is there nothing more I can do is my question. But I start to realize slowly there isn't much more possible. I have perhaps an idea in work but I'm not sure. It would be a indie wallet kind of thing to support devs while also being able to get back from it too, this way maybe it would eliminate some of the weight of supporting people you like and all, but maybe that's silly
