I tested the demo with my EverDrive GB X7 and it seems to work, but loading the ROM says there are no files, while there are definitely some text files along the ROM in the same folder.

Your description says the ROM can read text files from the SD card, but it does not seem to be the case for me. Maybe the text files need to be compiled into the ROM for the files to be discoverable/readable?

Well, it should work on Everdrive X7. and yes, it should read the files and directories from sd card.
Which revision and firmware version you have? does Updating the flashcard firmware fixes it?

It's an official EverDrive GB X7, Model 17, Rev C, dated 20.02.2018. My firmware version is up to date (1.06).

I just tried the VGM player, I have the same issue.
