Tactical Fantasy Game (think xcom)

We've been toying with creating an xcom type game in unity, but in a fantasy setting. Fighters, wizards, rogues. Orcs, dragons, trolls. You know, the usual. So far we have unit selection, attacks, and a basic ai that heals. We've included a bare bones vid but there's not really much to it at this time.

We hope to get the inventory system working for the players with weapon and armor upgrades and player abilities.

So is there any interest in a game like this? Any features that would really make it great?

I'm sure there woud be interest in such a game - you just can't really expect people to get too excited until you have a bit more to show them.
Personally, I'm a huge fan of the original two X-Com games, and while I consider them almost perfect, I'd say there are two keys things that stand out for me:

1.) The combination of squad-level tactics with strategic gameplay (the geoscape-based portion of the game). If you want to see what X-Com would have been like without the strategic layer, you only have to look at Laser Squad (the game to which X-Com was originally intended to be a sequel) or any of the Rebelstar games  - they're nowhere near as good, despite the tactical combat being relatively similar.

2.) The theme. X-Com had a really unique and interesting theme, with fantastic alien designs and excellent presentation. Fantasy is okay too, but avoid generic fantasy. Similarly, you need a unique and distinctive visual style - that's more important than the actual quality of the artwork / 3D models.

Devlog Update: Our Fantasy Tactics Game

Welcome to the world of Evervalley - Blood and Bone, a high-fantasy tactical RPG that blends deep strategy with turn-based combat inspired by XCOM. Step into the role of a kingdom’s last line of defense, leading a squad of elite warriors against the relentless invasion of a Necrotic Warlord and his monstrous legions.

The Story

A once-mighty kingdom stands on the brink of annihilation. From the shadowed depths of forgotten crypts, an ancient warlord has returned, bringing with him an army of undead horrors, orcish marauders, and wraiths that threaten to consume the realm. As the commander of the last royal stronghold, it is up to you to rebuild, train your forces, and push back against the rising tide of darkness.

With each battle, you will uncover secrets buried deep within the kingdom’s past—truths about the Necrotic Warlord’s return, the origins of his monstrous army, and a power that could either save or doom the world.

Gameplay & Mechanics

At its core Evervalley - Blood and Bone  delivers tactical, turn-based combat, where every decision matters:

Squad-Based Combat: Command a team of warriors, mages, archers, and paladins, each with unique abilities and strengths.

Permanent Death: Every battle is high-stakes—lose a unit, and they’re gone for good.

Base Management: Between battles, upgrade your stronghold with facilities like the Apothecary for potions, Training Grounds for advanced skills, and a Wizard’s Study for powerful magic research.

Dynamic Equipment System: Discover and equip thousands of randomly generated weapons, armor, and accessories with unique bonuses, allowing deep customization and strategic planning.

Enemy Evolution: The enemy doesn’t remain static—new abilities, stronger variants, and unexpected counter-strategies force you to adapt your tactics constantly.

No Time Pressure: Plan and engage in battles at your own pace—there’s no doomsday timer looming over your campaign.

The Road Ahead

Right now, we’re in the middle of balancing battles and refining AI behaviors to ensure a challenging yet rewarding experience. Enemies will react strategically—swarm units will flank, casters will retreat when injured, and brutes will prioritize high-value targets like your clerics and archers.

Next up, we’ll be testing advanced difficulty scaling, ensuring that every fight feels fresh, dangerous, and dynamic.

We’re excited to share more updates as we push forward! Let us know your thoughts—would you lead your kingdom to victory, or will the Necrotic Warlord claim it all?

Stay tuned for the next devlog!

We have started a developer log and will be posting regular updates to it. We hope everyone will join us there.
