Hello, gamers and artists! My name is Mike and I’m the main writer and programmer of a narrative / text-based horror game called When Darkness Falls (for more info about the game, please check out our PatreonGameJolt or itch.io pages).

When Darkness Falls is a text-based game and audio is as important as the story being told. We want the player to have a good experience while playing the game and making choices that could affect their future in the game. The game is still in early development and we’re interested in finding volunteers for voice acting.

This is a free game being made by two people, using free resources and software and unfortunately, we’re in a tight position right now (so we can’t offer you any kind of financial help, as much as we’d like to) -- which means you’re signing up for volunteer work and if you’re chosen to be part of the cast, you’ll be helping us out to get experience to add in your portfolio and your name will be in our credits page and websites for everyone to see!

Any work will be done remotely so for you to join our team, you need to have a Discord account! We’ll always be available on our Discord group to offer you directions and help you with whatever you need, may it be questions about your parts or characters, etc. so always feel free to contact us.

How to participate

If you want to participate in the auditions, send an email to mikewscolt@gmail.com with the following:

  • Your name, age and pronouns;
  • Your Discord tag;
  • If you have any prior voice acting experience (this isn’t mandatory)
  • A few sentences about yourself;
  • If you’d be interested in a different role if one becomes available.
  • Your sides (again, feel free to submit auditions for more than one role!)

Your sides must be either .wav or .mp3 format and at the beginning of the recording, please state your name and who you’re auditioning for. Any other file format and recordings with missing information will be discarded.

Auditions will be open until May 31 at 11:59pm (timezone GMT -3)!

Feel free to submit for more than one role if you’re interested. LGBTQ+ people and actors of color are more than welcome and strongly encouraged to audition. We’re also open to any experience level! Don’t be afraid to send an audition if you’re getting started on voice acting. We want to help you as much as you want to help us!

Roles:

  • Mary: a mother, older than she looks (and sounds) like but no one knows how her real age. She’s mysterious and soft spoken, but also friendly and pleasant, a gentle soul that no one cares to understand completely.
“Once upon a time, in a village long forgotten by all, there was a beautiful girl that loved to pick up flowers at the edge of the woods. The flowers she’d always choose were the prettiest flowers in the whole village and she adored, more than anything, the wonderful smell they offered, and the way their petals curled and withered after some time.”

“Do not be afraid, my love. The dark can be scary and there are monsters and evil spirits hiding in the shadows, trying to hurt you, but I’ll always be here to keep you safe. I promise.”
  • Alice: a strange 14 years old girl that no one seems to know, but is always seen wandering deep into the woods. She’s somewhat friendly, but there’s something just really wrong about her… maybe it’s the way she moves around and how she talks, almost as if she were a doll.
[hums eerily]
“...what a pretty mockingbird, really pretty. He’ll like you, he will. Do you like my dress? Mama made it for me, a long time ago.
Long, really long. She’s gone, but he takes care of me now. He’ll take good care of you as well, I know he will.”
  • Alexander: Mary’s oldest son, hated by the villagers for reasons he never cared to find out. He’s not friendly nor gentle as his mother, but equally soft spoken. He’s ominous and can be seen as threatening, but he does have a gentle spot for children.
“Within, walls continued upright, bricks met neatly, floors were firm, and doors were sensibly shut; silence lay steadily against the wood and stone of Hill House, and whatever walked there, walked alone.”

“You’ve met a terrible fate, you know. These woods… there’s something wrong living here. Something evil. But you know that already, don’t you. You’ve seen them before, trying to claw their way into your room, crawling under your bed. You knew they’d find you."

[silence]

"No, you’re not. You’re brave. That’s good. Hold this courage close to your heart, little one, and hold it tight. You’ll need it, all of it.”

Last but not least!

More characters will be added later on as we make more progress on game development and we’ll let you know when it happens, in case you’re interested in auditioning for more roles. Just keep an eye out on this thread and on the social media I mentioned before, and you can also keep this file on your Google Docs. It'll be the first documentation I'll update when new characters are available!

Thank you very much for participating and break a leg!
