Hello! I just got an idea for a game project called: "Mission Racoon", this will be (i hope) my first attempt to make a complete game.

What is this?

A simple portrait mobile platformer game where you need to shoot at enemies coming from different directions

Little concept sketch done with paint. (yeah...)

As the player progresses, the game becomes harder and bosses  will be added as well.

Mechanics

Since i want the game to be simple and easy to play with the smartphone the only controls will be the following:

  • Shoot right
  • Shoot left
  • Shoot upwards
  • Jump

To achieve this, i came up with this gamepad idea:

If the thumb goes to the right, left or up, the player will shoot in the respective direction. If tapped, the player will jump.

Graphics

I want the game to have these good looking pixel art graphics inspired by games like the classic Sonic the Hedgehog or the famouse indie game Mighty Goose.

But since i work alone, i'll have to learn to draw with this technique.

Storyline

The game will rely mostly on the gameplay but i came up with a simple storyline:

"An alien raccoon is in a mission to "clean up" the earth infested with robots controlled by a big evil guy". Pretty ingenious, huh? :)

Game Engine

I use Construct 2, Simple to use, doesn't require code knowledge and i'm already familiar with it.

Release

I don't want to pay for a monthly Google Play/ App Store fee so the game will be published here on Itch.io in .apk format for android and if i figure out how on iOS.
And maybe in the future i'll make a version for desktop

Thank you!

If you've read all of this, well, congrats! I guess you have a good attention span.
I'll try to post maybe once a week or whenever some big progress has been made, see ya!

Note: There may be some grammatical errors, i'm not english, so...

DevUpdate 1:

Hello readers! Today i want to show y'all the little prototype of the game:

General:

Raw example of the game
As you can see, the enemy spawn is working, the gun, the controls etc...
I added also a little shake effect.

Progress Bar:

Raw example of the bar
As the player defeats the enemies, the bar fills up. You have, for every level, a specific amount of enemies to defeat that when defeated, a boss will spawn.

Conclusion:

This is very little progress for today but it's still something.

Thanks for reading!

Cool! Can't wait to see how this turns out!

Thanks!

DevUpdate 2:

Hello People! ;) , yesterday i was kinda busy and couldnt work much on the game but today i finally made something!

For the bosses feature, i realized that the shoot left, right, jump controls aren't enough, so i added the swipe left and right controls to move the character, here's an example:

Example with the mouse

Here, i temporarily disabled the enemies spawn, it's kinda bugged but it works.

I also tested it with a smartphone:

Couldn't post a gif for this.

Again, it works.

Just wanted to share with y'all the small progress that i've made, thanks for reading! ;)

If you got some feedback feel free to comment!

DevUpdate 3:

Hello! Got some updates to show y'all:

Life System

Did a three lives based life system:

What are those red bars?

Indicate whether an enemy is spawning on the left or right.

Progress Bar Fixed

I set a goal of 5 enemies, since the goal is small, the bar will fill up faster.

Boss spawn

Once the goal is completed, the boss will spawn with a small cutscene.

Character concept

Unfinished

Tried to do a little pixel art of the character, it kinda sucks but we'll see what to do...

Conclusion

A week has passed and i've made some pretty big progress. The prototype is finished and tomorrow i can start the actual development.

If you got any feedbacks, feel free to comment.

Small update: Started working on the main menu and had to make a title card:

What do you think? Should i Change it?
