How long should a demo be?

Can the demo be 10 < x < 30 mins long? How much would this effect the overall score?

has to be an hour

Well actually...if your game is good enough, time is not a factor.

The proof of this is Dezue’s Quidget, which won first place People’s Choice last year. I remember being able to finish that game in like 20 minutes. But it was a hilarious 20 minutes. Guess a lot of other people thought the same way. :)

Awww thank you, man! That's so nice of you to say.
Thank you for playing and I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Stay funky,
Dez

But winning People's Choice is different than the Degica's Choice. They are looking for a game that can be expanded. If you have a game that is less than an hour because you accomplished everything you wanted and have no other plans, I think that would lower your score in their mind.

It doesn't have to be a full hour, if you think you can communicate everything you need to the judges, it can be whatever length you want. (Though if you go over an hour, the judges will only be obligated to play the first hour).

Really? Cuz the point of my game can be pretty much conveyed in 5 minutes. Run around, kill guys, avoid traps, play minigolf lol

Would that take away from scoring? I can get all 18 holes done, but I would rather really polish a few

Really length needed is strongly dependent on genre, but I'd probably aim for at least 15 minutes of actual gameplay.

Thanks. I just appreciate the amazing opportunity. Making just the prototype forced me to solve some problems i've had with a lot of the games I've tried to make so its already been worth it.

should we make a full game or just demo ?

The goal of the contest is to make something that can be expanded into a larger experience. So demo may not be the right word, but it doesn't have to be a complete game.
