I think that animals would be a good contribution to the game, Lots can be done with the idea of animals even to the point where it can be used for the final ending. there could be more acheivments like "carnivores"- have over 60% of your pop. eat meat or "vegans"- none of your population eats meat... You could also tame them or other things like that.
