What am I doing in the beginning? Waiting for something besides glitches to happen. Unless File>Quit is suppose to do something to the game besides close it.

Sticking true to the whole letter format, I'd like to ask you a question. Upon reaching said step, what is the process you did towards finding out beyond trial and error? Currently I have them narrowed down to basic functions and upon restarting, the buttons seem to act the same but the symbols change location.

If you know the basic types of each button (digits, operations,...) then there is a little bit of trial and error involved, sure. You have to figure out some calculation where you can predict the kind of answer you would get.
