this happens to me as well, there's no way to save the game either

Same here, it doesn't save the enemies I've discovered for the journal either.

...and when I beat the game, it crashes. I don't get to see the ending animation.

Looks like I have the same problem. 

Kind of big deal in game when one is supposed to die.

Sorry to hear you've been having issues with the game, the crash was related to our winding down of the Loot Rascals servers and we think we've hopefully been able to fix this issue on PC now. There is a new build of Loot Rascals live on Itch so you use the Itch app to play the game you'll be able to update via that and if not you'll need to redownload the zip file from your Itch account. This should hopefully fix this crash on death/winning issue.
