Very addictive game with a satisfying runtime and excellent audio implementation: all elements were balanced well to create a very fun fishing experience that was not too overwhelming. Also loved the story and thought that it was a fun touch that showed you were able to maintain a healthy pace in completing your jam project.
P.S. If you have a minute, I think you would really like my team's game "Growing Up"! :D
This is the best progression system I've seen in the jam. Also the cleanest GUIs! I think the game could do with a little bit more sound design during the missions themselves, but otherwise a legitimately perfect entry and super impressive accomplishment of scope given the time constraint. Awesome awesome stuff!
If you want to check out Growing Up, that would be so lovely ;D
Great concept and fun execution! I enjoyed the music as well. The one criticism I would have is that the physics sometimes feel more like crawling up to a swinging point, with occassional bursts of extreme excitement. I think in future development the game could benefit from either a change in the physics or more incentives to "restart" when you get to a slow point, encouraging the player to try to do each level in one go. Cool stuff!
After playing for a solid 30 minutes, I can safely conclude that this game is not "nothing". In fact, there is a lot of really cool stuff happening here, especially considering that this is your first completed project. This is a really stellar accomplishment keeping that in mind. Working progression system, both 3D and 2D environments with functioning controls. I am honestly very excited to see where your game dev journey takes you if this is your first complete project :O
The notes I would give:
- Progression feels a tad slow
- Controls are only introduced after you use them to speak to the first NPC, worthwhile to consider teaching the player the interact key in a different fashion
- Collisions with platforms are a bit clunky and could use some ironing out; try allowing the player a grace period with jumping off the edge of platforms and making collisions a tad less harsh perhaps
Overall very VERY solid first-ever game jam entry. Can't wait to see what you do with it!
Really enjoyed the use of multiple audio regions to give a sense of progression as you explored. It is clear that you as a developer appreciate aspects of mystery both in the narrative you crafted and in the game design (exposed yet seemingly unreachable paths, etc.).
As mentioned here otherwise, respawn time could be reduced. I also felt that the game ramps up in difficult a little bit suddenly towards the end, which could be worth looking at.
P.S., the sudden, piercing sound of dying on spikes made me jump: twice LOL
