Actually we implemented the controls where the character faces the cursor quite late in the development. At first he would just face in whatever direction you'd be walking in, but it was too hard to accurately aim for the different "craft stations" so we implemented that aiming mechanic, maybe we should have provided a toggle for people only wanting to use the keyboard? Definitely something to keep in mind though :)

Yeah, it all gets a bit last-minute in game jams I gather, but overall it's an impressive game. I suppose in the future you could get the head to rotate, but not the body.
