Wanting to is a good thing, it just takes some time building up the courage and stuff. You shouldn't be the one actively trying to make it better if your mom won't put any effort in at all
Maybe start off small, like 'appologising' for the 'backtalk' (don't put like it heart and soul into the apology, just make it sound sincere)
Unrelated to the apology thing- maybe like- go shopping together or something and talk about her interests and yours and see what y'all have in common, build from there
