After the blowers fire, pieces of other creatures can glitch into the back wall of the trap, or get thrown through the wall and out.

I'll create and publish a Mine Shotgun creature if i get the chance

Glitchy and powerful, here comes...

The MINE FIELD GENERATOR!

Not only does it generate minefields by overfilling itself, but also spills them out unevenly!

Also if you spam space while the 4 chambers are crammed with mines,

you can send them ALL out at GODSPEED, killing EVERYTHING

who undeleted all that

A rather intriguing specimen has turned up:

This rather wide fellow was spotted roaming around, with plenty of enemy giblets strewn everywhere, so I decided to investigate a little further:

...the "Pusher" zooid seems to have gotten  rather huge boost to its strength.

Utilizing only 3 spikes and a whole load of pushers, this ruthless little fellow is able to launch its spikes absurdly far. Furthermore, due to the constant push provided by the "Pushers", the spikes will move rather erratically after being fully extended, acting as a pseudo-flail which decimates enemy zooids at a speed that's never been seen before.

The only feasible downside has got to be its size and speed: it lumbers along and turns at a rather low speed, potentially allowing enemies to out-run or ambush it, although none have been able to do it so far (this thing has adapted a "kill it before it has a chance to kill you" tactic that leaves none in its wake). Even so, by coating itself in "Pushers", it has sufficient energy to always keep them powered if need be, being able to use said "Pushers" as a force-field of sorts, rendering it untouchable to most enemy breeds.

I have heard of an "Ancient" zooid (similar to the Sniper zooid) capable of doing something similar without the need for "Pushers", I'll see if I can find any specimen that has such a thing...

After doing some further exploration, I was unable to find a specimen with the Ancient zooid that I was looking for.

However...

I have managed to get a hold of the DNA sequence of the zooid from an old fossil!

Known as the Grabber, its name alludes to its function: It acts as a biological grappling hook!

With much excitement, I decided to have my first foray into gene-editing, and "injected" the sequencing into an existing specimen that had a remarkably similar attack mechanism to the previous siphonophore I showcased (i.e. the post just above this one), allowing it to grow the zooid.

The above image shows its initial form, moments after the extracted sequence was injected.

A few hours after the gene therapy (and after leaving the specimen in the Free-Roam area), this was what it looked like:

Not only has the specimen grown to a considerable size, but it decided to incorporate the "pusher spike launch" method onto the Grabbers as well!

The grappling distance of this thing is absurd:

Those Grabber hooks can easily reach outside of its field-of-view, allowing it to cause all sorts of chaos: Preventing enemies from escaping, dragging in unexpected obstacles (i.e. spike balls), etc.

Even without the use of the Grabbers, its large array of Pusher-launched Spikes create a large "area of death" around it, and its front-facing array is strong enough to chew up Frakir* specimens with ease!

Of course, this menace needs a nickname, and I've decided to keep it simple this time:

Whiplash.

* The following image shows an approximate reconstruction of a Frakir specimen, which was the result of a mutated Cra'than (the original Frakir is an Advena):

After almost a month of silence, I am back, and with somewhat interesting discovery:

What you see above is a ravenous predator, sporting yet another type of "ancient zooid" - the Energy Leech. As its name implies, it is basically the Leech zooid, but it saps energy from opposing siphonophores, dealing next-to-no damage as a trade-off. Due to the similarities to the Leech, the Energy Leech also has the same "latching" effect that allows it to pull enemies that it is attached to closer. The above creature has exploited this by putting a row of spikes in front of its Energy Leeches - lowering the effective range of the Leeches, but making them into close-range grappling hooks that hold on to any enemies attempting to escape from the spikes.

The result is a creature capable of tearing through foes, while making sure that running isn't an option for the enemy. For good measure, the creature also evolved a row of Poison Squirters, in the event the enemy is tough enough to require the use of poison to soften it up.

Finally, the relatively compact size of this creature makes it rather agile - only being out-sped by creatures composed almost entirely of movers, or creatures that are reduced to their "core".

The only thing this predator possibly has to fear is its unfortunately fragile structure zooids being ravaged by ranged weapons...

/!\ ALERT /!\

A rogue specimen has escaped from 3RR0R (Real name classified)'s lab. It was last seen escaping the Free Roam area.

An image of the specimen's last known form is provided below.

WARNING: This specimen is HIGHLY AGGRESSIVE AND DANGEROUS. Do not attempt to dispose of it yourself.

Notes left by 3RR0R on the specimen:

This particular Buginis specimen was rather intelligent as opposed to its usual counterparts, so I've decided to enhance it using the same method I used for the specimen with Grabber DNA, this time with the Sniper zooid. Along with its pre-inherited Pusher, Squirter and Chitin zooids, this creature had the essentials necessary for a long-range pusher-enhanced armament. What I didn't expect, however, was how scarily cunning this thing was...

Despite its large form being supported by only five movement zooids, rendering it terribly slow, it made up for it by being extremely heavily-armed. Mine-producing zooids line almost the whole of this creature, with the exception of the front and back sides, which are lined with Pushers instead. The creature used the all-too-familiar "weapons rack" structure (seen used by another Buginis specimen in my previous post), with one row being used to house movement zooids instead. By placing the Pushers at the front of the rack, not only do the poison mines get flung out, but the range of all its weapons can be boosted using the pushers, allowing for a ridiculous amount of firepower to be concentrated on its front. The rear-end Pushers help somewhat compensate for the enormous pushing power of the front end, and allow this creature to perform a unique maneuver:  emitting mines while activating its pushers , the creature slowly rotates in circular manner, causing two streams of poison mines (which are flung out due to the Pushers) to seemingly emanate from the creature. As if the huge amount of Miner zooids weren't enough for area denial, this maneuver essentially makes the creature nigh-unapproachable, unless one intends to get heavily poisoned.

After laying waste to everything I could throw at it, it eventually managed to find a way to escape via a connection between the Free Roam area and the wild, which is usually a one-way route meant to allow me to see unsuspecting wild specimens (there is a proper exit, but it is usually sealed off when I'm around). This thing just blasted its way through the one-way flap like it was nothing! (Reminder to self: find a way to make a better one-way flap, because rubber ain't cutting it anymore)

My advice to all other fellow researchers: please do not let your creatures get anywhere near that thing. I will find a way to keep it contained once more, and I don't want it hurt, nor do I want it to hurt your specimens either. We all share a common goal after all: to create the most powerful specimen of all. However, as you can see, control over the specimens we make is still crucial, so that incidents like THIS won't happen(I don't want entire ecosystems destroyed just because something got loose)!

UPDATE: Alert is no longer in effect. Specimen retrieved.

After that near-disaster, I've managed to secure the specimen after having to breed a huge amount of small Cra'Thans (consisting of two Turbine zooids and a Sizzler) to incapacitate it. However, the one thing more shocked than the specimen has to be me, as it had rapidly adapted its form to solve some of its previous form's issues. Take a look at this:

As you can see, it has taken on circular form, evenly spreading its Miner and Pusher zooids, using the "instant mine field" tactic when it uses its rotational maneuver. The Sniper zooids now cover the four cardinal directions of the creature, with less zooids per direction, but more coverage overall. Furthermore, it seems to have done away with the Flak and Squirter zooids (perhaps it deemed them ineffective?).

To prevent this thing from breaking out again, and to study it better, I have placed it into a special isolation tank that simulates the Free Roam area (no linkages whatsoever this time!). That should keep it busy enough to study it!

In the meanwhile, I'll be looking for any other intriguing wild specimens, while patiently waiting for my new aquarium set to arrive...

...oh, the fun I'll have when it does...

...Oh, right, I forgot to give this one a nickname.

It shall be henceforth known as:

The Adaptive Annihilator.

(1 edit) (+1)

It's not unuuuuusual to have fun with anyone.

Im too lazy to edit my previous comment so,

Here's this thing!

The rhymingly named Poison Pistol!

This thing has claws on the outside just to deter enemies from randomly attacking it.

It's specialty is firing poison VERY VERY VERY far. However, a Poison Sniper of some sorts may launch poison FASTER and further then the P.P.

How it does this?

It has both the Blowers and Spitter eaters wired to the same key.

And it has to fire that one key on it's keyboard while it's reverseing.

Here's a meme. The red is the enemy creature. The blue is mine.

About time I broke my silence here.

It's been awhile. Pardon me for my absence, for the Aquarium has given me the opportunity to create creatures unlike any I've done before. Here's a taste of what I've been up to:

After studying several sessile Cra'than specimens, I went ahead and attempted to create one of my own. The result was The Doomsayer (pictured above), a writhing mass of zooids tethered to the environment (seen here in a simulated Cra'than habitat). This thing originally started out as a core, looking like this before steadily anchoring itself:

As stated earlier, this is but a taste of what I've done. I've been busy creating and re-creating various creatures, and I hope to show more soon.

Developer(+2)

Holy hell this looks really cool. I imagine small Siphos running into that thing and getting eaten. Looks very organic and natural. Even makes me want to add these kind of "obstacles" to the game.

Is this topic dead? I hope not.

(1 edit) (+1)

G u e s s    w h a t ?

I am finally back, again. Long absences from here seem to be a recurring thing for me...

Anywho, let's get right into it.

Ever since the discovery of a new species (The nomadic Vagorus), I have been hard at work studying (read: conducting extensive research on) its various parts, as well as the morphology of typical specimens. What you see above is a theoretical* construction of a "Big Bad" from this new species. Boasting a very symmetrical form evocative of a modern quadcopter, the Drifting Destroyer is well-protected on all sides by its arrangements of Burstopod and Twister zooids. The combined effort of these zooids make this thing nigh-unapproachable:

It hurls vortexes and Burstopod bombs all around, making it difficult to assault it without getting stuck in a vortex with a couple of bombs. Due to its drifting nature, this specimen would theoretically prey only on small organisms. Hence, its method of attack is not well-suited for taking down siphonophores as-large-as or larger-than itself. On the flipside, its method works like a charm against small creatures; rendering them helpless with bomb-laced vortexes.

Finally, let's talk about its movement. This species' movement zooids are extremely versatile: it gives anything it is attached to a turning speed advantage that almost no other movement zooid can offer (a close second is the Turbine of the Cra'than). Despite it's symmetry, the above creature actually has a method of taking advantage of its speedy turning: It can help itself get unstuck from obstacles that it encounters while drifting in the currents!

Welp, that does it from me for now. Look forward to more stuff from me in the future. I'll give you a little hint as to what's coming: I've been tampering with a Frakir specimen in my downtime...

* No specimens of this species ever grew to a large size, possibly for ease of drifting. However, if a specimen ever achieved a large-yet-efficient form, this would most likely be the result. Said theoretical creature above was created using a combination of simulations and genetic manipulation.

(1 edit) (+1)

So...

I did say I was tampering with a Frakir specimen last I left off, no?

But before I dive into the juicy bits of this post, let me first showcase what led to the final result:

On first glance, this appears to be a typical Frakir specimen. However, if one looks closely, one will realize that the zooids have been "segregated" (each "arm" now has zooids strictly from the derivative species)!

This "Segregated Frakir" was originally an experiment to see how a Frakir specimen would perform if its zooids (particularly, its utility zooids) weren't shuffled around for synergies. The verdict? the above form can still perform decently, although the Saenus Beefuorus section lags behind the rest due to its utility zooids (the Pushers) not helping out in combat much.

Now, on to what I did next...

With the discovery of the Vagorus species, some of you may have seen this coming.  As to how I managed to do this, I simply injected the DNA sequences gathered from my prior research of various Vagorus specimens into a modified Frakir (the extended "arms" being the modification, made in anticipation of the formation of a new "arm"), and let it feast from the nutrient dispenser in the aquarium. Just as I predicted: It grew a brand new "arm", made up of Vagorus zooids. The result is a five-pointed Frakir, although improvements can be made to the enormous "void space" between the arms...

...it's still a good killing machine though.

I decided to call this freak-of-science Freikir, for the name is similar yet different from the one that started it all: Just like the specimen itself.

That's all for now, but before I go:

Next time we meet, let's just say that the Cra'than aren't the only ones with sessile specimens anymore...

Oh Vagorus, you surprise me...

(+2)

As promised, here's the sessile Vagorus specimen I found...

Originally, I mistakenly thought this thing was a gigantic Drifter zooid stuck to a piece of the environment. However, upon closer inspection, it turned out to be a Vagorus specimen with a magnificent morphology!

Named the Quill (based on its similarity in appearance to its namesake), this strange specimen has given up its nomadic lifestyle for something akin to filter feeding:

As you can see in the above illustrated diagram, the Quill anchors itself on the various pieces of detritus found in the Vagorus nesting environment, usually on singular pieces of rock/dead organic matter that are nearby or in the way of a constant current of water. It lies there, waiting for unsuspecting prey to be swept by said current and into the feather-like feeding structure, where it uses a whole array of organic weapons to ensure quick incapacitation and absorption. Meanwhile, the "holdfast" of the creature is itself heavily armored and protected, preventing any sneaky creatures from trying to ambush and dislodge the Quill.

Overnight observation by automatic recording equipment of the specimen also reveals a stunning adaptation:

Apparently, when the Quill deems its current anchoring spot unsustainable (by, and I'm really making a huge assumption here, somehow measuring the amount of prey successfully caught and eaten relative to time), it can un-grow its holdfast and assume the above form (that I dubbed the "locomotive form"). As such, it is able to completely relocate itself should it desire to! However, the "locomotive form" has some glaring issues, particularly in anti-flanking (the rear has no defences now!).

Welp, that's all for now, I'll continue to keep y'all posted if I discover anything remarkable.

(1 edit) (+3)

I'm back, and with an alarming discovery...

...oh boy.

A sessile Vagorus specimen that is purely Vagorian (unlike the Quill), this gargantuan mess of zooids appears to be hell-bent on assimilating any detritus nearby, utilizing bits of rock and whatnot as a sort of "support". Due to the amount of Twister zooids on it, it is capable of generating a sizable field of strong currents and vortexes around itself, while all its Burstopods shred any siphonophore caught in the maelstrom.

To make matters worse, this specimen also has a remarkable growth pattern: it will grow "tentacles" (technically, pseudopods) that attempt to reach any nearby matter. The "tentacles" will hang loosely by default(as seen from the bottom-center to bottom-right of the above image). However, upon sensing something nearby, the "tentacles" will rapidly grow to entangle its target. It will then proceed to do one of two things, based on the situation:

1. If it grapples a living siphonophore, it will grow as many Burstopods as possible and rapidly kill the entangled target.

2. If it grapples debris, it will grow Peapod zooids to fully encapsulate the debris, before growing Burstopod and Twister zooids to claim the debris as it own.

Interestingly, the core of this specimen is enmeshed in a net of Peapod zooids. I am not too sure of the purpose of this, but I have theorized that it is some primitive form of central nervous system(to allow the "tentacles" to respond accordingly), although this has yet to be confirmed.

This Vagorus specimen has been named "The Mass". It was deemed to be a threat to the Vagorus habitat when it was originally found in the wild, and was thus relocated to an isolation aquarium, where it will be fed and experimented with.

This is super cool, thank you for posting this <3

Well that's just terrifying!

Makes me think of attempting to build one of those with whatever species i can do it with.

Or even a roblox thing where you play as the beast...

But ROBLOX is 3d and Sipho is 2d...

Let's just hope for the best...

Also, a little typo i found.

what i see: this specimen also ha a remarkable growth pattern

what it's SUPPOSED to show: this specimen also has a remarkable growth pattern

(2 edits)

Well, guess I must've been somewhat correct in my assessment of it having some sort of nervous system, as it seems that The Mass has gained sentience and helped me correct a typo!

...jokes aside, thanks for the correction, and I hope you liked my creation! I feel honored to have inspired you with it. And yes, your observations are correct - those were the respective zooids I was referring to. I refer to them by the names given in-game!

Since saved creatures now have codes, I might share some in the future, due to reception they're getting...

(+1)

Back again...

...and I might have gone way too far with the science this time.

What you just saw was an attempt at modifying yet another Frakir specimen (Can't you tell that I have quite the fascination with this particular species?), which has resulted in...

...erm...

...do I even want to know?

All I know is that its feeding method is as fascinating as its size: it can somehow generate whirlpools (similar to those found in the wild that lead to deeper waters) to pull unsuspecting prey into one of its four, shall we say, "torture chambers". A rather intelligent tactic, due to the fact that its whirlpools are virtually indistinguishable from normal ones.

What's more, similar to normal Frakir specimens, this thing has a lair made of rocks, albeit with no proper entrance. This synergizes well with its whirlpool-generating tendencies, as the lair protects the rather vulnerable "exterior" while it sits there waiting for other siphonophores to take the bait.

I've lovingly (read: reluctantly) called it Inverse Frakir, since it somewhat resembles a Frakir turned sorta-inside-out (ie. rather than being a four-pointed "core" of an arena, this thing is the arena, kinda like Mhajh'tha).

...for anyone who wants the genetic code of this abomination, for whatever reason, here you go...

...guess what?

Sorry for my long absence(again), I have been busy with life and the new zooid types discovered...

Presenting: The Hive Series

This set of three creatures were genetically engineered (read: created) by myself to be the toughest of living obstacles (Why? For testing purposes of course!). While all three have extremely limited movement capabilities, their sheer number of Swarmer zooids will make short work of any siphonophore that gets too close. The Swarmer zooids are a recent discovery, and are marvels in their own right - symbiotic hives? Who would've thought!

The three creatures are as follows:

Top Image: Hive Alpha - The first of the Hive Series. Rather simple structure, with nothing special. Capable of self-healing.

Middle Image: Hive Phi - The second of the Hive Series. Significantly more complex structure, so as to accommodate yet another recent discovery: Greaser zooids. The addition of Greaser zooids gives this creature a noticeable range advantage over its predecessor. However, there is a tradeoff: This particular creature is more fragile than the other two, lacking Nervefiber zooids and having many Peapod zooids as connecting zooids. Of the three, this creature moves and turns the fastest.

Bottom Image: Hive Omega - The third and final creature of the Hive Series. Absolutely massive creature that builds on the strengths of its predecessors: Peapod zooids are harder to reach and damage and have increased connectivity, drastically more Swarmer zooids to overpower enemies quickly, Sizzler zooids added for energy regeneration and for protection against creatures that get too close. Be wary when placing one of these into an aquarium.

This is taking new zooids to a another level!

This little guy dreams of becoming a gigantic sessile blob of flesh wrapped around rocks.

Will his dream come true?
Only time will tell...

Edit: He has found a cluster of stones.

Edit x2: He decides that this is the best stone to root on.

Edit x3: He has figured out how to save up nutrition for defense modules while still wrapping himself around the stone.

Edit x4: This is his current method of attack.

He will constantly reposition them to keep hitting his target.

Edit x5: He senses a nearby rock to cling onto and expand his colony.

The mine came from where he is at.

Edit x6:

Due to enemy attack, he has deemed his previous rooting site unusable and picked this one instead. Good pick, because there is a rock right next to him!

Edit x7:
Game over...

It was a nice run though.

Very cool roleplay! If we had some mechanic, maybe through a zooid, which would buff neighboring zooids stats if Sipho has no movers, this kind of play could work. Or a zooid that is like Grabber or Leech, but doesn't let go of objects and doesn't require lots of energy to maintain hold.

I have a suggestion...

Building off of your idea of a "Grabber/Leech that attaches to objects": The Holdfast zooid.

Type: Utility

Max Health: 10 when un-anchored, 15 when anchored

Range: 3 (similar to Leech zooids)

Nutrition Capacity: 4

Energy Regen/Second: 3 when un-anchored, 10 when anchored

Mass: 2

Drag: 10

Ability: Anchor (Energy Cost: 30, Cooldown: 1) - Attaches itself to a nearby object. Doing so greatly increases the energy regeneration and health of the zooid.

Base zooid cost: 4 Nutrients

Great for making sessile creatures, this zooid is able to sprout "roots" to attach itself to any object (yes, even eggs and spike balls, though the latter is risky). Since sacrificing movement is quite a large trade-off, this zooid offers exceptional energy regeneration compared to other utility zooids when anchored, while also making sure it is not easy to destroy. Also, rather than requiring a constant energy cost for the zooid to hold, a better alternative would be to make it be a toggle ability, ie. spend 30 energy to anchor, and another 30 if you wish to un-anchor.

Good idea!

I wonder how it would work with Zooids from other Siphos around - it might be too powerful as a holder. Although we could always say other Zooids are more "slippery" than stationary rocks. Also state as a toggle might get weird, but if we do it as we do with Flail - global for whole Sipho, it should be okay. I will write this down and propose it as a prototype for next potential Zooid drop.

Thanks for considering my idea! You also nailed the method which it will toggle (which I forgot to mention), i.e. global for whole Sipho like flail.

And yeah...it was designed to be a little bit on the overpowered side, but in my mind, it was to balance out the fact that it only becomes powerful when active and anchored. After all, it's fragile dead weight when it isn't anchored! Nevertheless, I'll leave the balance to you guys, since you will be the ones to playtest the prototype if it does come to fruition. I'm just glad that my suggestion helped!

Thx so much for this, infact this is kind of what ive always wanted, like my very own christmas wish.
