Hey there. First, thank you so much for the kind words! There's a specific timing to when the guards pay attention. You need to take the long route, walk towards the well and then go from there on the lower half of the map towards east. Both guards have two pauses when they turn away: A shorter one and a long one. The shorter one doesn't give you enough time to pass them, so observe them and wait for the longer one to begin before passing by. Also don't walk too close to them or they'll notice you anway.
