Interesting observations! At the moment, Canada becomes a critical bottleneck for trade, as most ships going between the hemispheres go there. If you want to sabotage it a bit, go ahead and connect central america with africa, or something like that, and disconnect the northern land route. Canada will soon find itself poor, I think :)
