Hey!
Layering is the key! (Try to mash some sounds together)
Always think about what you wanna do, like try to breakdown the sound you want to make.
-> Bass/Mid/High Layer
Be creative!
If you need a weapon sound but can't record any, try to achieve it on another way, there are endless possibilities,
The brain always try to connect sound to picture. If you need rain, just record roasting meat, EQ it. If someone watching a video about a rainy day and you put the roasting meat sound underneat it, they will think its rain. (just an example)
Try different techniques!
This works with any sound, just pitch some sounds and you will get really cool results.
Use reverb, delay, frequency shifters....

I forgot I made this thread, so thanks for replying!
All sounds like really good advice- I really enjoyed messing about with Audacity for our previous games, so that'll be something to work on. Being able to realise what sounds can mimic other sounds is something I'm finding a bit tricky. As you say, the brain matches sounds to pictures- so being able to learn how to pick those apart could take some time.
But I'll certainly enjoy experimenting. Thanks for your help!
