Very interesting first game from the both of you from the conception to the realization of it. I wasn't able to get the best grasp of the game but it definitely has a lot of potential to it. From the art to the gameplay, it's a very well crafted game for a first game jam/game in general, so kudos to the both of you and here's to a good game dev future to come

Newbie?
Yes - I'm new to game jams!
How does your game fit the theme?
The game puts the player in a place, where he has to experiment to get progress to master flight - equally how a (new) game dev needs to start/begin with a project to eventually create a full game.

Hey AlternalDev - great to have your feedback aswell.
Happy to hear you liked the design and aesthetics of the game, even having a rough time with the controls. We love to continue to improve our balancing to the perfect point of easy to learn and hard to master - and will create a less punishing learning cycle as soon as the jam ends.
Thank you for your kind words, we are eager to take on our next projects and jams and would love to hear more from you aswell in the future.
Thank you very much for your precious time spent on playing Learn to fly, you are awesome!
Amazing submission and it fits the theme so well, loved the gameplay and managed to fly in about 8 tries lol
Its nice to see this game getting the love it deserves.. :D
Dear Pixel Monsoon,
first of let us thank you for spending time playing our game!
Congratulations on mastering the ability of flight within only 8 tries and kudos for not giving up until ultimatly succeeding. Really glad that you enjoyed the entry. We are eager to test your submission to the game jam and wish you good luck for the remaining rating phase!
And thank you for commenting and letting us know your thoughts!
your definitely winning this cuz 1st the ratings 2nd the GAME it's so good
Thank you for your kind words!
While we doubt we will be taking one of the 6th winner spots - we already feel like winners having so many people playing and enjoying our creation. All of our goals with participating in the jam were already accomplished so we are really happy with the experience we had.
Glad you liked our game and love the enthusiasm :).
Thank you for playing our game SohamGames and we'd like to wish you good luck for the remainder of the rating phase and love to see your entry aswell.
This game is really cool, I genuinely felt like a baby bird with no idea what to do at the start. Except instead of a horrible death at the hands of gravity, my only punishment was waiting 5 seconds for the hatching animation. Phew!
This game feels very polished, it really feels like it accomplished what it set out to do. Awesome job, especially for a first submission!
P.S., my brother and I have always wanted to start gamedev together, too. But I could not convince him to actually help me on my submission, lol. I think that is super cool that you guys were able to work together on this. Keep going!
Love to have your feedback aswell JoyousLlama!
We didn't want to put some people off with having an animation of the bird falling to the ground or hurt himself - so glad you liked our solution to that.
It was really fun working together as family - the great thing was, although I was more experienced due to my software development background and experience with unity, we could start somewhere new together using godot and creating arts and music (where I still barely grasp the basic concepts), which was also a really good reason for me to learn godot throughly. So we plan to do more jams together and maybe, next time/jam you can convince your brother to join - it's lots of fun and the game you'll always treasure as memory of one another.
We really appreciate the time spent playing our game and wish you all the best for the remainder of the rating phase.
Thank you for playing Learn to fly!
Really fun game, it took me a while to figure out how to actually fly, but I think that is intended due to the nature of the game. I loved all the pixel art and sound effects, that egg opening sounded crispy. Good job!
Could you check out my game if you have some time, would really like some feedback. Have a nice day!
Great to have your feedback!
Indeed the core gameplay loop is learning the controls - nice job catching on to that.
Good that the creation of the SFX not only lead to omlette, but also increased the overall enjoyment.
Thank you very much for taking your time to play our game!
Of course we will return the favour and have a look at your submission before the rating phase ends!
Good luck!
Hey there, thanks for playing my game! I wasn't actually able to get it to progress beyond the main screen on chrome on MacOS in the web version. No input I pressed seemed to do anything. Not rating based on that but figured I'd let you know!
The visuals and audio are really good. It took a while to learn how to fly using the currents. I wasn't sure how to increase my speed as I always slowed close to a stop near the end(? where the ground ended). I do wish the restart was a bit faster though. Overall, it was quite nice after figuring things out.
First and foremost, thank you very much for playing our game, it really means a lot to us.
The horizontal world borders are poorly/not communicated at all, this is definitely something we should fix and also keep in mind for future projects. Love to hear you were persistent and eventually mastered to fly!
Thanks for the feedback.
The game fits the theme really well and the art is so good! the controls feel quite stiff and frustrating at first but is worth it for the pay off when you master it and actually begins to feel very smooth. I also really like the changing the sound when you get better at flying it was a good indicator that I was doing something in the right direction. I would've like if the egg opening sequence was sped up as it does feel a little sluggish especially on repeat runs. Good Job!
Hey FrankRJ - great to have your feedback aswell.
Happy to hear you had a pleasent time with our entry, although the hatching->fall sequence was to slow for consequetive attempts, where we agree and will fix the issue post jam. And nice that you noticed our audio and visual hints for change in gameplay, we tried to used ingame systems as much as possible to communicate the game to the player, sounds like it worked here - great!
Thank you selecting our game for testing and giving us this valuable feedback!
Beautiful game! The art was really well done and really invites the player to keep exploring. I appreciated repeating the cycle of hatching and flying, definitely fit the theme of the jam and I like the messaging behind that analogy. The physics of the actual flying was hard to understand at first, but I feel like that was kind of the point of learning to fly, you get more and more control over time. Nice submission!
I really liked the little feather cursor that you made, the menu looked super snappy and interesting. I was sad that it kind of disappeared once the game started, maybe I did something wrong but I never the cursor again.
I agree with what some other people have said that this game feels a little frustrating, and I think I know why that was for me - it's like you've made a puzzle game, but as a player I don't know what the end goal is, and there's no indication that I'm making any progress towards it. Usually in a puzzle game the goal is pretty clear, but the way to get there is hidden and you have to discover it by trying different things. In this game you've hidden the "how" by not giving the player any help with controlling the bird, but you've also hidden the end goal ("what am I supposed to be doing?") and hidden all the player's progress ("are these things I'm trying making any difference?") I think that's what felt frustrating for me, feeling like I didn't have a goal and I wasn't making progress, until suddenly I finished the game and I still don't really know how, or what changed, or if I did anything differently.
Aside from that, I really liked the game, I thought the graphics were cute, the little bird was fun to swoop around and the sound effects were really nice. I liked the general vibe, and it felt like there were a lot of art assets for such a short time!
Let us first thank you for commenting and taking your time for this detailed feedback.
We agree with you, analyzing the comments made us realize, the ultimate goal, flying up into the sky, is not directly or indirectly incentivized or hinted at through means of the game. For a next jam, we will make sure we don't miss on this point again, thanks for the valuable information.
Concerning the mouse cursor, we wanted to have visual or audio queues for different mechanics in the game. The mouse cursor was meant to indicate an "action"-input is available at your current stage. This is during the egg stage and during the last stage of flying. Our Idea of hiding it during the fall, glide, flapping and flying phase was to make sure players know they should concentrate on the wsad / arrow-keys.
Love to hear that the asthetics and ambience of the game were to your liking.
Thank you for playing Learn to flight - we really appreciate it!
i learned to fly. it was cozy and overall great experience.
great entry!
This game is really cool and the narrative of the newborn bird learning to fly is so creative!
The only criticism I have is that the movement is hard to understand in the beginning, also a skip button for the intro cutscene would be nice after you die
This was kinda cozy, but also kinda frustrating at the same time? XD
I like the art a lot and the overall vibes to it.
I get that you want to keep the mechanics sort of obscure and want the players to discover for themselves how it works but if it's too obscure like this I feel like it could alienate a lot of players. Or it is just me and I'm too impatient for this type of games haha.
Either way, good job on submitting!
Hey Lestavol nice to have your feedback!
Yes we agree, we took the risk making the discovery of the control the main mechanic, knowing that it may alienate some players, but we wanted to achieve something similiar like e.g. FromSoftware Games, where you feel rewarded for finding out yourself. Balancing this to the right point is of course very complex.
Currently it's a mix, if refering to the comments, without knowing the exact number, I'd assume a ratio of 20ish% or so that were frustrated and stopped... although I did not analyze it.
Great to hear you still enjoyed the aesthetics!
And finally thank you for taking your time, playing our game, especially if it wasn't your kind of jam :).
The art style in the game is quite beautiful and pleasant, which unfortunately cannot be said about the controls. The controls are rather awkward, but if this project is given more time, I think it can be fixed.
Overall, good work!
Took me three attempts to "get" the flying mechanic, but once I did it was smooth sailing. The visuals and sounds are nice and calming, and game is satisfing even if its end is a bit sudden.
Hahaha, I definitely noticed the same respawn issue! 😄
Aside from that, I really enjoyed how flying gradually felt lighter and more intuitive the more I played—it’s a nice touch!
I finished it on my second attempt but didn’t manage to collect all the letters. Does the game end once you pick up the ‘T’?
Hey Denji
glad that you enjoyed our spin on the concept of mastering flight!
Considering your question - no collecting the letter T does not complete the game, but flying past the second leaf crown triggers the end of game. This is maybe poorly contextualized without any additional text - thank you for the feedback.
And thank you very much for taking your precious time playing our game!
the art is pretty cool but the gameplay is still weird sometimes, not sure on how i actually managed to fly tbh, any way it is a great entry, good job :)
if you have the time feel free to go try my game out as well, would love some more feedback
Hey TheCrabBadger,
no worries - the game mechanic is to learn the mechanic to fly, if you knew how it works from the start, the playtime would drop to 1-2 minutes I'd imagine. But hearing you succeeded to fly brings joy to this one!
Thank you for your time, playing our game!
To your request to play your game - as mentioned before, we want to make sure, that at least on of use plays every game of those who left a comment on our submission, but not exclusively just games on our comment section. So far there is only one game, where we need to find a way to start it, but every other commented game entry was played, rated and commented/feedback'd.
That being said - we already had great joy exploring flap_tower :)
Overall, the game was really nice! I was first treating flight like mario 3 racoon suit, but it seems like once you fly for long enough you just... get infinite flight? I think there is an extent to which i dont quite understand what part of the movement causes... that. But the everything else was great! i especially loved the bird flight animation!!, and it felt really nice to alllmost hit the ground and then pull up at the last minute! I had lots of fun, very well done :33
Congratulation you are now free to fly towards exploring the depth of game development :3.
Yes it is a progressive stage system, where if you use the current stage mechanic you gain experience until you hit a threshold and unlock the next stage. Gliding (raccon suit) goes to flapping (short up burst) goes to flying ("infinite fly" but still respecting gravity) and then theres one more.
Very happy to hear you liked the animations, i really gave it my best.
Thank you very much for playing our game.
