The Censorship of NSFW Titles is Disgusting

This caving to the whims of payment processors and anti-trans, anti-porn hate groups without the bare minimum of an announcement is a disgusting betrayal of the game devs itch supposedly supports. A lot of indie devs depend on platforms like this and now this rug pulling without so much as a warning is going to risk sending them into the negatives when people go for refunds of products that don't exist anymore.

we must do something to defend our right

(+13)

I'm no expert, but I think actionable feedback we can do is...

- E-Mail the payment processors at Visa/Mastercard your Feedback and voice your frustration at whatever e-mail you can find of them online

- Start using Cash payments wherever possible. Want to buy a Steam Game? Buy a Steam Gift card from your local convenience store with cash and get your game that way. I know, it's not as practical, but they need to understand that they will lose money with this decision.

- Raise awareness about this with people you trust - obviously, be careful about this one, because the topic at hand is very delicate, and most people in real life aren't going to share your passion for Adult Games.

we must do something to defend our right

Btw before all starts talking about VISA and Mastercard and Paypal having a monopoly. The only reason they have a monopoly is because of KYC and AML that the GOVERNMENT has mandated. So they would NOT have a monopoly if it was not for the government. This is all big governments fault. Please don't ask for more regulation, we need LESS and we would not have this problem.

Criticizing bigotry isn't censorship.

(1 edit) (+50)

I highly suggest people sign https://action.aclu.org/petition/mastercard-sex-work-work-end-your-unjust-policy along with anyone in the UK ONLY to sign: https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/722903 to show your dislike of such actions by companies and governments.

(+3)

I don't thing it will work, even stop killing games got fully founded but the companies will not gaf.

(+5)

Apple gave a f over their phone batteries not being super glued and being made to use usb c for their chargers.

(+3)

no they did NOT, they were FORCED after years of legal pressure. If not for that theyd keep making their phones terrible for their own monetary benefit. This is why we need to voice our opinions loudly or else they will continue to walk all over us.

(+3)

That's what I'm saying. The EU forced them to change.

(+4)

its only been 16 hours and that first link takes me to a "page not found" in their website

Making inflammatory posts (a.k.a. trolling) is against our terms of service.

(+47)

Or you know we can file a class action lawsuit against this site too and show them how damaging this is really gonna be for them complying with this abusive attack on our freedom.

(+60)

at this point, the site, the payment processors, and the bigoted orgs need to all be sued at the minimum. as much as the ruling in favor of Citizens United way back has hurt us we may be able to leverage the decision made there to our advantage. that decision being that the act of spending one's money is an act of free speech.

(+17)

O.O LISTEN TO THIS PERSON THEY ARE WAY SMARTER AND MORE INFORMED THAN ME!!!

(+9)

Tortious interference claims are generally pretty hard claims to make, but since this would have to be a class action it might actually be something with teeth. Anybody reach out to Legal Eagle about this?

(+70)

Honestly couldn't agree more. It is disgusting, terrifying, and a direct overstepping of boundaries between the creators that rely on this site and the site that relies on them. The payment processors have leaned on sites such as Itch.io and from there are just going to keep pushing. What was adult content today will be Queer content tomorrow, then content by black and women's voices. All for the sake of profits via hate.

It's going to hurt a lot of people.

(+2)

I can't understand what you mean, do you mean that they are right to harm consumers and publishers for their own gain?

(+14)

It's tomorrow today.  Penny Larcney Gig Economy Supervillian has no nudity or explict content but it has been shadow banned.  It does have progressive story lines on things like trans rights.  This is like the book bans in public libraries, it's about erasing anything they don't personally endorse from public spaces.

(+72)

The complete lack of any announcement about this has killed any confidence I have in itch.io's leadership tbh.

(+38)

yup, they lost all trust and respect. i only just started buying games here. glad they told me not to. I'll find a better site that actually respects its customers.

(+27)

I was honestly kind of hoping they'd be one of the last ones to give into this sort of thing. They've generally been very good to creators from what I've heard. And now they've just pulled the rug out from under them...

(+26)

You're only as good as your last performance. They done stuck their dick in the light socket.

(+9)

And nothing in the announcement they did release even hints that they're going to try fighting this. At least give people some hope, but I guess even that is too much. That plus the incredibly heavy handed approach they're taking really kills my confidence that this platform is being led by competent people.

(+29)

Let em fucking burn.

(+25)

its such a revoltingly cowardly pathetic thing to take this lying down, but i never for a second had any faith that this site's leadership would fight back anyway. good on them for masking off so effectively. maybe now we can make a good website!

(+39)

its like no one learned the lessons from tumblr

(+11)

Itch.io could go the way of tumblr at this rate.

(+46)

You know, harming the creators that give your site content to sell, never ends well, right?

If anything, you would be chasing away , as far as I could tell from before, a large chunk of creators of those games(which means lost revenue for you as the host).

Hopefully you revert your decision, otherwise it sounds like many will look for a new home.   That is why Unity reverted their cost decisions, the fallout of users and studios that they otherwise would have kept.

(+42)

Agreed, it's pathetic that Steam and Itch are bowing to these payment processors' virtue signalling.  If you disagree with the shadowbanning of "sexual content" on these platforms, you should strongly consider calling and emailing Mastercard, VISA, and Paypal, and let them know your opinions.  The vocal minority is behind this puritan bullshit, we need to remind these companies where their money comes from.

(+17)

It wouldn't be easy to resist, but nothing worth doing ever is. They should have fought them instead of bending the knee.

(+31)

itch.io is cutting its legs off to stay in the race at the demand of bigots and idiots, i can't foresee them coming away from this without consequences- we should absolutely raise hell about this, get organised and fight back. if i was leafo right now, i'd be ashamed of myself.

(+28)

I´m developer of adult games, itch.io did not delete my games but if they hid them completely, you can only access my video games by direct link. It should be clarified that none of my games have incest themes. I only upload my games to Itch.io, however if this continues like this, I will be forced to upload my games to other platforms.

(+19)

What options are even left? They seem to be going after anything selling adult content. At least on Steam some stuff is still available but hard to know what the payment processors will deem "illegal" next, seeing as they are making the laws now. >:(

(+6)

I've heard some people are using crypto currencies to get around the payment processor companies.

(+32)

This is messed up. Why should payment processors be the arbiter of what is "morally acceptable" ???

Genuinely worrying political implications where this will lead in the future.

(+9)

Visa, Mastercard, Discovery, JCB and Paypal have been harassed by WASP Karens in Australia in to screwing over NSFW and LGBTQ+ content under the "tHiNk Of ThE cHiLdReN!1" moral panic.

Is it shitty that Itch has delisted NSFW games from search? Sure, but they're stuck in a no-win scenario of either keeping the NSFW games searchable (and *you* as the searcher have to jump through hoops to allow NSFW material to show, but Karens don't care) and get cut off from being able to take payments from credit cards and Paypal, or remove those search results and be "allowed" to accept payments from card and Paypal and pay content creators.

Are you going to be moving to another website? I notice that a lot of people have already been moving to F95. Personally this site is pretty much dead to me.

(+20)

You fucking cowards, fuck you itch.io

(+18)

Without any announcement and explanation - DISGUSTING! I thought this indie platform was better than that. Let us adults have games catered to us!

(+3)

so true.

(+4)

itch.io need to say we will remove the abusive games, but we will keep the rest of them.

(+23)

It is terrible that itch.io is bending the knee to these censorship clowns. Especially when many indie devs who make nsfw games will lose their income.

(+6)

its techically illiegly to go after games, so i don't know why steam and itch.io aren't fighting back.

(+9)

The form was unfortunate but payment processors are WAY powerful. Preventing the payments to the devs needing the money isn't really a solution either.

(+18)

Too powerful my ass they just got sanctioned by japan pull your head out of the sand you damn coward it's time to FIGHT!!!

(+14)

Yeah! Why didn’t Itch just sanction the payment processors like Japan did! It’s not like Japan is both a nation and a powerhouse economy and Itch is a website for hosting small indie projects for prices ranging from cheap to free!

(+4)

OH WOW STRAW MAN ARGUMENTS WITH NO REAL WEIGHT SHUT UP! WE CAN DO THE SAME DANAGE WITH A CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT AND THERE ARE OTHER SITES THEY COULD HAVE STOOD WITH TO DO THE SAME SHUT UP YOU CORPRATE SHILL!!!

(+7)

Here is the deal. If payment processors are the real issue and threatened you (and not you just woke with paranoia today). Copy the website and attach crypto payment methods - I don't like crypto, but if that what it takes, I rather have support for the adult game creators than this mess.

(+7)

Bending the knee by Steam and itch was not a good thing people be prepared more things are likely coming

(2 edits) (+6)

Welcome to the F95zone. Let's move there. At least people can see game updates there.

My game has disappeared as well as everyone else. That is, porn lying on every corner is normal. My game, where all adults, etc. - not normal?

(+4)

I'll be signing up after today. Itch has lost my respect...

(1 edit) (+6)

I was publishing my game on this platform because I knew there were quite a few people here who no longer visit other sites to look for such games.
As for Itch.io itself — it annoyed me for just one single reason, but oh god, how much it annoyed me.
I'm talking about the Most Recent game category that works in some completely incomprehensible way.
For your game to appear there after an update, a planetary alignment practically needs to happen.
Specifically: the update has to be massive and it has to be reviewed by a moderator — a process that takes around a month (I waited two).
But now… I don’t know. If they don’t reverse this decision, Itch.io is in for hard times financially, and game developers might end up facing increased fees as Itch.io tries to cover its financial black hole.

I hope they’ll limit themselves to a set of rules for such content — which, technically, already exists, but Itch.io just didn’t give a damn about it until now.
If that’s the case, the platform will just get cleaned up.
But if they force creators to remove nudity altogether, then that’s straight-up f*cked.

this place is probably done. Just forget about it and pull your game. Steam is $100 for a listing... cheap right?

(+1)

Steam is also proving to cave to pressure as well. Plus Steam bans some games from being published that were uploaded to itch.io in the first place.

(+2)

Mine has disappeared from searches a week after I launched the page(in january), and has not returned.

(+1)

The problem with F95 is that you have to consent to alternative versions if you're making a commercial game.

This is what is bugging me about going forward with it.

(+5)

I love how people keep blaming Christians and Boomers (Love how all the ist/ism/phobia people always double down on ageism) and far right but most of this the far left. I know, I know you people can't ever comprend that the far left can be just a as evil as the far right, like Collective shout is, they are a mixture of far left and far right women who hate any version of adult material.  Even Chatgpt says is a mixture and there is no way in hell the CEO of Visa and Mastercard are any side of right, as they both embraced woke and DEI into their companies.

This is WEF/BlackRock at work, remember BlackRock CEO Larry Flink "you have to force behavior" and that's what this is doing..

What sort of AI girlfriended loser asks ChatGPT anything and trusts it's output?

It's a probability machine. It picks the most likely next word based on the (stolen) training data, not what's actually true.

What really makes me wonder is that there are many LGBT projects still up. By now, only 1/4 of those would be remaining if it was a clear attack on LGBTs.

(+4)

This is disinformation. Collective Shout is an Australian group which is that nation's equivalent of the USA's Moms for Liberty: a bigoted anti-LGBT group that relies on asymmetric attacks and propaganda to get its way. There is NOTHING left-wing about Collective Shout.

(+4)

Please avoid MAGA talking points like 'DEI' and 'Woke'. Besides that, the far right often pretend to be leftists. We see that with Nazis (National Socialists) TERFs (Trans-exclusive-radical-feminist), leftist-sounding slogans like "All life matters", and Zionists weaponizing antisemitism as a shield for a genocide. ChatGPT might fail at recognize such subtleties.

Also, "Far Left" is an absolute positive thing! Leftism is rooted in egalitarian principles, the idea that all human have worth through our humanity, and thus we should all be treated as equal. Basic humanity is not something which can go to far. That said, leftists can absolutely be assholes, become racist, transfobes, authoritarians, puritists, etc, but that's not far left—that is failing at being leftist, abandoning the core.

(+9)

Thanks Itchio for nuking my potential source of income!

(+5)

i downloaded all my library and probably deleting my account later

(+11)

A line has been crossed (and it's not the first time): the intermediaries of money flows should be neutral, if they can choke at will any transaction, then they can choke all of us... that's a violation of everyone's rights

(+2)

Yeah, tomorrow they will tell you have to be a christian to use visa.. the real power I must say.  And that how everything started..

Correct, they show no sign of stopping... and they won't

May be time to go back to checks, money orders, CODs.

(+1)

Well that would hardly be compatible with digital stores, the industry would make more than 1 step backwards. We should have better solutions than that

DVDs aren't expensive. Spiderweb Software was profitable operating on check orders. Epic was built on them.

(+10)

It's shocking that Collective Shout's threatening email takes precedence over consumer protection laws. I can't understand how a game can be deleted from users' libraries without any prior notice, even after they’ve already purchased it. And Itch will likely shift all responsibility for customer complaints onto the creators, while they themselves run off with the frozen funds of those creators. Truly smart of them. It makes me sick.

(+1)

I hope you've realized now that California was in the right in forcing Valve to acknowledge that you don't own your games on these platforms. ;-)

(+3)

Visa, PayPal, mastercard, discovery etc... gave them an ultimatum, if they don't act fast any money transfer becomes impossible if they can't pay no one nor receive any money, what would they do? we are just fucked

(+4)

Bro I was gonna play Genesis by Whitescar studios, which isn’t even EROTIC despite it having the NSFW, Adult and Erotic tags.

(+2)

I understand how you can justify these wallet companies. They just do not want to get involved in something related to making actual porn/sexual content with real people. It's done mainly because of human trafficking or consent issues. But cmon these things have nothing to do with games.

(+9)

As much as I understand Itch... it happened day after I bought huge packs of professional soundtracks and sfx's to improve quality of my project. As well as few weeks before releasing  rework of the entire game that took more than a year.

Not exactly angry as hopefuly it will be listed back but it's extremely disheartening.  Many nsfw ddevs scramble for free time to learn programming, writing and a lot more, just like any other developers.
Loved  and still love creating both wholesome and heartbreaking stories. And every message/ping is exciting.

Always tried  and will continue trying to make people smile.

(+2)

next thing you know they’re gonna start banning people for their pfp smh

(+5)

I've only been on this site for 7 months, and I'm already thinking of quitting if itch doesn't reverse their decisions. I know boycotting won't actually do anything since I only have around 500 page views combined, but I'm sick of everything.

(+3)

no boycotting will work. You absolutely should. In fact, everybody here should pull their games right now.

(+1)

I just wanted to play some vore games man...

(+9)

It's not just indie developers who depend on platforms like Itch and steam. Users also rely on them to find and purchase/acquire games in a safe and convenient way.

(+4)

Censorship is the tool of those who have the need to hide actualities from themselves and from others. Their fear is only their inability to face what is real, and I can't vent any anger against them; I only feel this appalling sadness. Somewhere in their upbringing, they were shielded against the total facts of our existence.

(+2)

post new sites here too please.

(+1)

https://itch.io/t/5121190/alternatives-to-itchio

(+1)

It's a very crass maneuver by the staff of this site. Anyone so duplicitous and lacking in basic respect for civil liberty should be wiped off the face of the earth. Or as Lenneth Valkyrie likes to say, "Humans who cross beyond their designated boundaries invite more than death... they invite total annihilation."

(+1)

This should lead to a regulation on behalf of the goverment, is not possible that a private organization which wasn't elected nor have interest on social causes have the power to censorship what can the people of the world play or can't. So american gamers should give a battle against these organizations which only cares what investors think or want...

If you want regulations, fine. Just don't let the government overstep it.

(+2)

I know these petitions don't go far, but surely at least we can make our point with what Collectiveshout is doing.

And yes, I speak Spanish; I'm sorry the petition is in my native language.

https://chng.it/mrhc8pKnMy

Btw before all starts talking about VISA and Mastercard and Paypal having a monopoly. The only reason they have a monopoly is because of KYC and AML that the GOVERNMENT has mandated. So they would NOT have a monopoly if it was not for the government. This is all big governments fault. Please don't ask for more regulation, we need LESS and we would not have this problem.

(+2)

Let's be a little realistic, please. KYC and AML are not going away. Regulations and laws in general are here to stay.

What might be possible is to force payment processors to be neutral, so USA citizens should contact Congress.

(+1)

VISA/Mastercard are a duopoly due to Central Banks worldwide.

(+2)

I would suggest to all here that you contact your representatives if your in the US and voice your concern to them regarding Visa and Mastercards ability to prevent people from buying what they want which isn't illegal.  This is the way we beat them since if their ability to block people from paying for things is made illegal we permanently take away the door groups like this keep using. Groups like this are paper tigers and if folks push back they will crumble.

Can't tell if it's a troll, but just to be clear : this wave of censorship, like a lot of those, is pushed by a right-wing conservatives association, Collective Shout. Anti feminism, anti LGBTQ+ things, this type of group.
Censorship IS the point of those "anti woke" group, always have been ^^"

(1 edit) (+3)

Most of the SFW queer games are still up and safe, but who's to say that giving CS what they want won't have them coming back clamoring to put them on the chopping block next? There NEEDS to be pushback, in any measure, or they'll just figure they can do this with everyone.

(+3)

Since Collective Shout wants NSFW, LGBT and pretty much everything they can label as "offensive" gone, i can tell you that SFW queer games will be targeted, sooner or later. That's the way of censorship.

(+2)

Unfortunately, for people and groups like CS, queer is in and of itself NSFW. They see no difference between a wholesome story about a trans person going through transition, and hardcore pornography on Pornhub.

(+2)

I will deleted my account soon, and look for alternatives, maybe even self hosting. Already wiped all my info and game from here, even though it was not a porn game, there was nudity like in gta or baldurs gate, you know, normal nudity for normal people. Hopefully Steam and GoG will not cave as hard as Itch did.  Good luck everyone

(1 edit) (+1)

Where's our refunds for games no long available that we paid  for?
