A platformer with an interesting concept.

I felt like I was playing drunk sonic or something, frustrating, but addictively rewarding once you finish a level.  It is nice and quick paced, fitting for something like a game jam, only qualm is the lack of bgm or sound effects

I hate you. A lot. I really hate you for that game, but thank you anyway!

Here's a complete review of the different categories I use to rate :)

Visual

Visually, the game looks not too bad, but on my resolution the game was blurry (1440p). I had to make the window smaller to have less issues.

Also, I feel like the game needs more contrast to be accessible to everyone. Even to me, with no issues seeing colors and with great glasses, had trouble seeing everything. I don't really know if it would affect colorblind people or anyone, but I think increasing contrast would help greatly.

And finally, the visuals feel a bit disconnected from one another. It doesn't seem to have the same design, the same feeling and it feels a bit off, mainly between pikes and ground.

Audio

Unfortunately none. Try to take 30 mins to an hour to find a royalty-free BGM if you can, and even some SFX. The game would feel a lot more polished and would be way more enjoyable. I had to put my own music to make sure I could enjoy it at a maximum.

Tutorials

Great instructions, but it would have been even better in game. It's nice to have the goal written, too. Maybe just a bit too much text for a simple concept. I, as a normal player, would skip and play without reading, then get frustrated. During my tests on this jam, I try to force myself to be sure I don't miss anything.

Gameplay

  • There are challenging ideas that I like, the level design in general is great, with interesting concepts.
  • Although there are also levels stupidly hard (level 3 if I'm right), with jumps having to be perfect in order not to get killed. I think the difficulty is there too early and that kind of difficulty is not really interesting, and I almost quit the game at this point. That would've meant missing great content!
  • The key switching regularly is great,  I often failed because of that even though I could've avoided it, so great job on this mechanic!

Fun

I laughed while playing, so that's a 5/5 for the fun part, imo.

Bugs

I didn't encounter any bugs, so good job! Only the quit button which doesn't seem to work on the HTML5 version.

Theme

Definitely in the theme, great!

I don't know if I'm just terrible or if it's really tight on the hit boxes but I got totally stuck! Super cool game concept, frustrating in that "I must keep trying until I beat it" addictive arcade game kind of way. Great job!

Submitted(+1)

Really nice concept and interpretation of the theme! Easy to get the hang of, but really hard to master. Would have liked some sound effects, but I can understand if there was no time for that :D

The gameplay for this is awesome, and the idea is equally awesome!! I definitely felt like the either the spike hitbox was a bit big, or the player hitbox was big, as I kept walking up to it and respawning without touching it. Audio also would have helped. Awesome submission however, and definitely a great interpretation of the theme!!!

I feel the same music would have made a whole new experience.

Pls checkout my game as well.

Cool concept, love the art direction. Maybe some music to notify an impending switch could have been implemented, jumps where a bit too pixel perfect for my liking.

Really fun idea, and challenging but fair levels. A little bit of background music might be nice, but otherwise I really enjoyed it :-)

thanks! ^^

Really unique idea and quite challenging too! I think maybe it will be better if the spike can be smaller. ^_^

Man, this it tough! I think it would be really helpful if there was some warning of when the controls will change, otherwise it's a bit frustrating. I like the idea of the controls swaps, but they don't need to be that surprising haha
As you mentioned in the discord server it was hard to see what you were doing in development, similarly it's hard to see what's happening while playing! Not impossible obviously, but I think more contrast would feel/look nicer.
Well done though :)

I'm not big on platformers but I'm more just annoyed that there's no real build up to the jumping, just it starts with a dark character on a dark background with dark elements and then you have to get your character over a big spike jump. I managed to make it over the spike but then fell into the trap immediately. It feels less forgiving than flappy bird D:

Did you click "ready?"

Developer

I'm pleased you've figured out one result :3 I've made sure in the text on the page now that people should click "ready" once the egg is ready to hatch. Thanks for the feedback! I thought you were kidding around with the death stuff before haha

First of all, good effort! You made a game! I don't want you to forget that and not be proud of your work!

Stop reading here, if you are happy with that! However, if you want some  honest feedback...

There are a lot of issues that I have with this. First, it is very very hard to see what is going on. There is not enough contrast between the game objects and the background and, well, everything really.

I gathered that the 'gimmick' of the game is that the controls keep changing in surprising ways? It is really frustrating to play and again, very hard to tell what's going on -especially when you are in places with long stretches of bare ground since you can't tell if you are moving and in which direction. I would have given more indication of how the player is moving, maybe even give a warning when the swap is about to happen (a 3, 2, 1 countdown or something)... or I probably would have tried a less-frustrating gimmick to the game...

It is very important to always give the player clear and actionable feedback in order to create a fun gameplay experience...  I hope you can look at this as a learning experience and keep making games with these things in mind!

brutal but helpful lol

This is the most annoying game in the universe but I really like it! Building up all this momentum, then BAM! a switch throws me into some spikes. I did snag on the scenery occassionally but I was grateful for it as it saved me more than once. I got as far as the level with the really fast horizontal platforms but the flag at the end didn't seem to work. Good job overall! Would love to see this game expanded upon.

Developer

i know about the flag bug i am going to update the game soon to fix it

Never seen a game made with GDevelop before. Looks interesting.

Good job!

We both made platformers, called switch, with randomly inverted controls.
