Good game!
At the beginning I was wondering how the theme applied, until I realized your previous death points would spawn new checkpoints.
A fun game, honestly.
thanks
Interesting interpretation of the theme... you absolutely won me over by the unique "vibe" of the game.
Awfully frustrating how long you are stopped from moving when you run out of stamina. It makes sense as a punishment... but oof.
Thanks for the feedback
Really loving the visuals in The Perfect Place! The core game loop feels tight and compelling too, nicely done! :)
thanks
I'm glad I gave this a play. At first I wasn't sure what was happening to me when I was turning brown, I thought the lack of sun was killing me at first.
Overall this was a very good game from beginning to end, my only real complaint is that it is lacking a little bit on the topic side of things, but maybe that's just me.
Thanks for playing it, do you mean the "failure is progress" part? when you turn into a tree it becomes a resting spot and a checkpoint, so it's still progress
OH MY GOD I didn't even notice that! The trees are the places that mark your death?
I thinking to myself every time I saw a tree "Hmm... I didn't see that there before" and I felt dumb for not noticing it sooner.😂 It all makes sense now!
Thanks for clarifying Sergio.
lol, no problem, there are 3 pre-placed trees (besides the big one), but every time you die you become a tree too (now increase my "topic's" rating .-.)
Already did.
Fun Game. I enjoyed the mechanic of having to stay in the shadows. I got frustrated with the dash mechanic though, it felt to short and being forced to stop especially in the sun has very punishing. But I made it to the perfect spot, overall enjoyable experience
thanks for the feedback, i'm glad you made it to the end
Enjoyed it quite a bit
Your cover image is very eye-catching. I love the graphics style, it is very detailed.
A really good game! The graphic can be better but I love the idea of using the shadow to avoid sun because I'm personally don't like sun shine(especially in summer) and the game is exactly what I did in real life!(well in real life there is no blue ball flying in the sky)
I read your explanation about the blue guys moving logic in another comment but still hard to control it. I think some improvement can be: 1. make the blue guy move slower, so player can catch it easily. 2. make it patrol with a certain path instead of moving randomly 3. has a better tutorial to explain this.
I'm glad this game has save and load system because I thought good enough place is the ending and quit the game, then I saw the screenshots you uploaded and realize there is perfect place, with the save system I get the true ending yeah! One thing I would love to see is if I can zoom out to see the whole world after I turned into the tree would be perfect!
All in all a really good game! Love it!
Thanks, I'm gald you liked it and reached the end. I've been thinking about a way to easily explain the blue guy's mechanics in game but I can't find one, so might as well just slow them down like you say, so it doesn't matter if you can't do it right, at least you wouldn't be left in the sun with no cover until you figure it out, but they would still move faster when looking for an apple so you wouldn't have to wait for them too long when trying to atract them.
Wow, this game is downright incredible, especially for your first game jam! The central mechanic fits the theme so well. The gameplay, the lore, the creatures, and the theme, all mesh together so perfectly! I would love to see more about these tree people, they are so interesting! I love the little details you added, like the wave, how the leaves would get bigger when you were in the sun, and how your texture would slowly change whenever you were in the sun too long. There are a few things that could be improved:
- Having to wait in place for 5 seconds whenever you run out of stamina feels reeeeally bad, I think that it would be fine if it just cut your speed, but it grind the gameplay to a halt and makes the game more about watching a meter than looking at the screen when running out of stamina is so detrimental.
- The apples didn't add anything to the game, they could be removed and the game would be better, as I couldn't figure out their purpose
Overall, truly an excellent game, one of my favorites so far!
Thanks, it's my first jam but I have experience doing stuff like this. You are right about the halt, I did found it bothersome when testing, but I thought the solution might be for the player to pay more attention to the stamina bar so you stop running before it runs out, but I think it wouldn't hurt to reduce the waiting time anyway.
The apples did have a purpose, but I think the problem has to do with the lack of explanation or showing of the blue guys's behaviour. You are supposed to throw apples to atract them and walk under them, but unless you know how they behave, this might seem unreliable, as they are faster than you and might leave you behind.
I'll just explain it in case you want to try it out again: they move inside a predetermined zone. If you throw an apple in an area near them, they will leave their zone, grab it and return to their initial zone (and keep with their randome movements), unless you throw another apple, so in theory you could walk under one of them just throwing apples in the direction you want to go, but its not very easy to pull off. The easiest way to use them is: you see a blue guy in the distance, in an area you can't reach because theire is no shadow in the way, so you throw an apple in that direction, the blue guy will come and eat it, you move under him and follow him back to his initial zone.
Thanks again for the feedback, and I'm not sure yet about continuing development of this game after the jam, but I will most likely release a version with corrections from all the feedback I'm getting.
One of the best submissions I played so far! This is so fun to play. I love how your transformed tree shape forms a new checkpoint. Really fits well with the topic. The map and the player are very charming. I felt like the blue guys sometimes didn't really react obivous enough to the apples to rely on them for a run in the sun.
Amazing game you made!
Thanks for your comment. If I keep working on this proyect, making the blue guys's AI more clear to the player will definately be one of my priorities.
I like this game! Great art and gameplay! Good job!
Please check my game as well ;)
thanksl, already did
I loved the visuals and the music. Took me a while to see that the sun was killing me (im dumb) but overall nice game! Could maybe suggest decreasing the time it takes to regain movement after depleting your stamina completely.
thanks for the feedback
I liked the concept, the story was nice and it's well connected to the theme of the jam! Even though the long distances and empty places felt like a part of the theme, it felt like a bit much of walking back and forth where it didn't happen very much, and a little hard to anticipate how far you would be able to travel in the sun. Maybe it would be better if the distances were shorter and the sun more dangerous, or something like that. The eyeball-things were heckin scary. Great job overall!
thanks for the feedback, you are right, I think shorter distances would be better. Also I thought the bar person-tree would be enough to determine how much movement you had left before transforming.
What a beautiful game! I enjoyed the mechanic of dying to create a new checkpoint. It was well executed and fits with the plant theme perfectly.
To improve, I suggest giving the blue guys more of a purpose or having them help the gameplay more. I tried to work with one for a while before I realized that I could get just as far walking.
Overall, beautiful game and one of my favorites so far!
Thanks for the feedback, the blue guys can help a lot if you use them well, but I think it can be confusing as the AI of those guys can seem unpredictable at times as in, some times you cant anticipate which one is going to follow your apple. Also each one moves arround a predetermined spot (that is not shown in the game), so when you throw an apple, they will get out of that zone, eat the apple and return to the zone
Yo really loved the concept. Good game.
The big world was nice. I could feel a connection to the poor trees that lost the game before me XD. I liked the possibility to turn to low graphics. The apple-blue guy mechanic was difficult to understand, a tutorial for it would have been nice. I would have liked a zoom-out possibility on my mouse wheel to enjoy the nice map better. Good job!
thanks for the feedback, If I keep working on it, I will definetly teach the players how the blue guys behave. Each one moves arround a predetrmined spot, when you throw an apple they will get out and grab it, but return to their zone after this, knowing this and knowing where that "spot" is helps a lot
