It was my 2nd solo RPG and I enjoyed it tremendously. It took me 10 weeks to complete it, at a leisurely pace, and now I will play it again as a Mentor witch for my kids, in multiplayer mode.
The character creation may seem long but don't let it put you off, it's really worth it. Since the creation process leaves you A LOT of liberty, I was afraid I would fall into my favourite tropes, but it also offers you a very cozy universe, and even a way to expand on your pet projects.
I decided to play in a 1880 setting, and it worked perfectly.
If you want something cozy, intricate, atmospheric, something that feels like a Bildungsroman, letting your character grow very nicely, then it's the perfect game for you.
I especially liked the Memories' mechanic, both in a practical way (it helps to remember and also to create new Powers on the spot to fit the narrative) and in a figurative way (experience and memories are the best path to magical improvement).
Thanks a lot for this wonderful game !
As someone who hasn’t played that many solo journaling game, Village Witch is very beginner-friendly thanks to the simplicity of the rules. The prompts are descriptive but also vague enough to let your imagination run wild — there's a lot of creative freedom for the player. I would like to note that Village Witch isn’t very rules-heavy, it’s more about writing than playing (which I liked), but if you’re looking for something with more game elements, Village Witch might not suit your wants
