Description:
The Workshop and the Game Creators Coalition present the We <3 Games Jam, a beginner-friendly opportunity to learn about making video games! Participants will create simple interactive 2D games about something they're passionate about with simple cutout aesthetics and found archival materials. The Workshop will be hosting a virtual workshop on the game-making software Unity, in connection with the jam, to equip participants with all the skills they need to complete their games.
Important Dates:
- February 14 - LAUNCH! 🚀
- February 17, 6:00pm-7:00pm - Virtual Unity Workshop - Register here! (Recording available afterward)
- March 3 - Game Submission Early Bird Deadline
- March 14 - Game Submission Final Deadline
- March 24 - Let's Play! -- Cabell Room 250
Submission requirements for these games:
- Theme: Participants will make a game inspired by something (or someone) that they love! This could be a place, a passion, a person, or even a puppy! The key to these games is that they evoke joy in the people making them.
- Format: The format for these games is a style called flatgames, which uses 2D assets, often evoking the form of hand-drawn materials or cutout objects, to create a "handmade" aesthetic. Participants are encouraged to use the flat-game plug-in for Unity to make things easier, however, any flatgame inspired styles of games will also be accepted.
- Limitation: Because libraries love archives, participants must use at least one asset from the Library of Congress digital materials that are either public domain or Creative Commons. This could be an image, an audio file, or any other type of media available for remixing. (More info about creative commons here). There will be an award for the best use of archival material.
