I like that this one experimented with non-diatonic modes/chords. The way the chords at 0:04 move between minor and major is eerily intriguing. I imagine when you modulate to (I think) C minor at 0:53, is when you reach “phase II” of the boss fight.

The fusion of heavy guitars and the atmospheric synths was masterfully done. Nice job!

I totally agree with Blue Lava that you shouldn't have fun with this boss.

Very dark atmosphere, I love the sound of the clean guitar and its melodic line at 1'10".

As I'm not at all a metalhead, I don't know if it's a « classic » thing, but from 0'38" to 0'50", you play the snare on 3, then on 4. It threw me. It gave the impression of being somewhere other than 4/4. It makes the music a bit elusive, which is great for a boss.

And where did you find the whisper for the outro ?

Developer

Thank you for the generous critique despite not being a fan of metal. The whispers are from the Hellen VST from Silence And Other Sounds.

Wow this has some serious punch behind it! I love the sound of the electric guitar over the echoing synth plucks. Writing in phrygian is tricky, but when you succeed, it can create some really interesting dark atmospheres and sounds. I certainly wouldn’t want to mess with this boss! Good work and thank you for sharing!

Developer

Thank you for your encouraging words. This was fun to compose in Phrygian and work in the guitar.

The guitar mixed with chiptune sounds was not something I was expecting but I think it works well.

The guitar processing was really good and added to the intensity as well as the rhythm of the drums.

The whispering at the end caught me so off guard 😂 but in a good way - it was very spooky.

Great work!

Thank you so much for your review. As for the whispering, I had to fit the Hellen VST in the piece somewhere. It actually features twice.

Thank you very much for your remarks! I never thought of it as “pizza pie-esque”, but like the comparison. And it makes me hungry. :D

Gah dang, was not expecting such a rocking track! Killing it on that guitar wow, made it sound like it was definitely made for a pretty intense boss battle for sure! And the speaking at the ending was a great touch as well, great work! (Side note: Not sure if you're aware, but the title says "Spooky Tune Jam 2003" instead of 2023 lol)

Developer

Thank you very much for bringing that oversight to my attention. It is now corrected.

Also, sincere thanks for your compliments of the track. It means a lot!

I especially loved the intro (rest was great too though), very unique, a little misleading but setting the stage well. Super raw in places, which I think fit's the theme very well. Great ending too!

Developer

Thank you very much for the kind words.

You know this one has a quality and vibe to it that I don't think I've seen in any of the other submissions maybe beyond one. I really like where you took this project, and it turned out great.

Also killer guitar, I love it.
