Ice Cream Town

Correlation to theme
Sleigh Bells, Glockenspiel, and other instruments such as Kazoos all taken as instrument-inspiration from some of my favorite Snowy Villages! I tried to keep it sweet, but I'll let you decide whether I succeeded.

Very nice! You feel like you are in a friendly town in a snowy region, with townspeople greeting you with ice cream and a smile.

Developer

I love that it makes you feel that way, thank you <3

Jingle bells x Snowdin Town :)

Developer

Ooh, someone is given me new sources of inspiration ;)

Everyone, thanks for all the ratings! But don't forget to rate other people's songs too, they need it more than me at the moment. And trust me, there are some bangers in there! <3

Very nice, felt a bit like fairy tale or Christmas music, perfect for ice cream!

Developer

Yes! I am glad you hear the Christmassy aspect in it. Glad you like it <3

Snowy lightness, tinged with playful instruments. Enjoyed it.

Developer

Thank you very much <3

I like your meter mixture using the oompa pattern of up notes on beats 2 and 3, while also using the 4/4 feel of emphasizing the backbeat with the jingle bells (another great staple of snowy areas). I like the combination of instruments you chose with the low plucky string, the pipe organ-y sounds, and the whistle and glockenspiel on top. They give the sense of a light-hearted occasion despite the minor key. I think the mixture also gives the sense of a variety of toppings you might find on your vanilla ice cream. Overall great work and thank you for sharing!

Glad you like it! Indeed, I tried to make my instruments light - I originally had a Wagner tuba instead of the 'low plucky string' but it proved too heavy. The 'oompa pattern on beats 2 and 3' were the result of me taking inspiration from a 3/4 waltz, which inspired me to have a similar pattern - in 4/4 you can get away with any such thing!

Thanks for the in-depth explanation, I appreciate it <3

Incredible job!!! The second I heard the first few sections it immediately reminded me of a soundtrack we used for a Christmas-themed play! I especially love how well it loops together! (The added PDF was an incredibly nice touch!) I couldn't think of a better sound for a Ice Cream Town.

Developer(+1)

Ahw, thanks a ton <3

I'm glad you like the PDF: I more than often wonder how people made their songs (what instruments, what techniques...) but can never check. I figured: stimulate the behavior you want to see in the world!

And I indeed took a bit of inspiration from Christmassy songs: my 'organ-y kazoo-y vocal-y' background sound is almost a choir; there are obvious sleigh bells; and don't forget the glockenspiel! Thanks again :)

Sweet music - 'definitely has some fairground/ice cream truck flair.

Developer

Funny thing, I originally wanted to add an ice-cream-truck melody to the song, but I chose not to. I think it is lovely that it still gives you an ice cream truck vibe! Thanks for the 'sweet' comment ;)

It's nice to see you again.

I really like your composition and I will take the time to explain why. It's obvious that you don't have a $5000 sound bank and yet you manage to make everything sound good.

The 3/4 gives a fairground feel without being too "in your face", just enough to make us imagine ice cream vendors.

There are few instruments which gives the feeling of a small peaceful village.

I love how you make the glockenspiel respond to the flute/organ, it's very melodic.

You use a guitar as both bass and counterpoint which I find very impressive (I use the bass as a bass, I can't do what you did)

The music is in D minor and yet it remains welcoming and warm.

I especially like the flight at 25 seconds when the guitar disappears.

Well, I'll let the others comment too 😁

Developer

Wow, thanks for the explanation!

Indeed, I use a sort of 3/4 idea wrapped inside a 4/4 song. I used a 3/4 waltz for inspiration but wanted to give my own twist on the song, so I ended up with this.

I tried to keep the song really minimalistic indeed, as that is often with village-y and snowy area's. You gotta feel the calmth that is a frozen area!

Now, sorry for my lack of musical understanding, but as a self-taught I don't really know the concept of counterpoint. My guitar is used as a bass only, or am I wrong on that? I would love to hear what you mean :)

Oh, and I am glad you like the part at 0:25! I wasn't sure how it would sound to newcomers (you never do!) and I was worried it might be too 'much'.

Thanks again for taking the time to type this <3

Basically, counterpoint is a secondary melody that answers the main one.

At 24", your guitar goes up in the treble to answer the flute/organ. You don't use it as a bass anymore but as a musical response and it's very well done.

Developer

Ah, I see! Thanks for the explanation. While of course I intended the guitar to sort of have a mini-melody, I cannot say for sure that I purposely created a "very well done counterpoint"! I can only hope I did, thanks for the compliment anyway!

I love this! There seems to be a bit of Slavic folk influence used in a way that feels like a cozy cabin fireplace. It's plenty sweet without sounding too much like Christmas town. I wish it were longer!

Developer

Wow thanks! That's really nice of you :D. I was afraid that it might have not been sweet enough for an ice cream village, so I am glad you like it!
