Epic game!! I decided to do it bombless on Hard, cuz I think doing patterns bombless makes you appreciate them more. I failed to get a blind 1cc-- retried Patche's fight twice, since for some reason her first nonspell is the hardest thing in the whole game for me-- but it all felt very doable and fun. Way easier than the official games, but if it was as harsh as them my dumb self-imposed challenge would probly result in me playing this for like 6 hours and only having fun for the first hour, so I'm glad it's so forgiving. The patterns are really familiar for the most part, but most of them change just enough that the experience of dodging them is meaningfully different from the originals. Patche's final spell was really cool, to the point that it felt like it really expanded like, what the game was capable of. I really hoped there'd be more afterwards, but you know, this is already epic for a 2 week game.
Really funny writing too-- besides Patche's final spell, the Yukari text message thing was the highlight of the game for me. The art is awesome, the music is rad, everything's just super polished... yeah. It's cool as heck. Good job on all this.
Tysm!! :D
Very straightforward, simple and awesome touhou bullet hell where there's some love in the air n.n
Favorite parts: The hakkero spinning at the title screen is hypnotizing!!!! And the spellcards (On normal) are easy but very readable and enjoyable, I entered the danmaku flow incredible easy and didn't feel anything to be unfair or anything
Tysm! ^^
It seems as if I was completely wrong about this game, it is just so good!
Yet I think the balance is good, the music is amazing (especially main menu theme) and visuals are pretty well made,
The bullethell part was engaging which is good, the story itself isn't anything new though.
It looks as if it was from steam.
Tysm! That's the highest compliment you can get on this kinda thing ^^
hi, as one of the writers for this, can you elaborate on your problems with the story for post jam updates?
Sorry for replying such late, wanted to play the game again this time with reading the story carefully.
It is very good and clean (except the 2 or 3 text walls that made me want to ignore the rest of the story)
So, although I am not a good writer, I would advise to make the story a bit more chaotic (liked the part where Flandre came) so that it would make more players who get bored easily (like me) more interested in the story. Also please do not do text walls, but maybe I am just overreacting.
Anyways sorry for not looking at the story this much during the first play, it is charming and stuff. Good luck!
I enjoyed this one, so I feel like writing a comment. I really enjoyed the little things about the game, like the visuals were really nice. First impression was the title screen, which I immediately loved. I really enjoyed the Mini Hakkero on the title. Was invested with the story, very nice. I liked the bullet hell, it just felt a bit too easy. 4/5 I approve.
patchoulis last spell is bangin. high quality stuff all around, not too much bothers me. even unique bad ends! thats kind of catching on, gensokyo odyssey did it too
Tysm! :D
I was not expecting the fully featured shmup game to also have the funniest writing of jam. The whole game is polished from start to finish. Immediately, the UI is not just clean but also a treat on the eyes with animations and sound effects just scrolling through menu options. Everywhere you look on the screen, from the character portraits to the backgrounds to even just the sidebar during the danmaku sections adds to the visual appeal. The fights themselves are a mix of nostalgic and expressive of the characters they represent. With a complete suite of difficulty options, the experience can be tailored to the player's taste. And rather than just be a few cut-ins between the fights, the story is worth it by itself. There are moments that really worth a laugh while still offering depth in the exchanges between Marisa and Patchouli. Ran's "bug" in particular really got me chuckling. The cutscenes even have the psuedo-animations of visual novels, with Marisa near running over Meiling.
Care was taken for the player experience everywhere here. The story mode lets you retry so you can keep up with the story. Completing it unlocks a mode to skip straight to the fights for QoL on replayability. And I had such fun I felt compelled to up the ante from my Normal clear to Hard. With judicious bomb use, I squeaked by and find myself even considering Lunatic. I haven't had such fun with danmaku in a long time. After playing I am even eying the main line games I have left aside for years.
You really have to nitpick to find something to criticize here. A restart option would be nice from the pause menu in Legacy Mode. Or just a few more unique tracks for the bosses.
Great job to the team here, this is a contender for best in jam in several categories.
Tysm, I'm really glad you liked it! ^^ I meant to put in a restart option for legacy mode, but in the panic of submission I straightup forgot, so I apologise about that ^^;, regardless, this review made my day ^^
This was looooads of fun. Controls great, looks great, the bullet patterns were smooth and easy to read, and lunatic had just enough challenge to have me replaying a few times. I didn’t realise how much I was craving some dodging until this game showed me a good time. The story was nice, I particularly liked the subtheme of a relationship between people who won’t live the same amount of time. Marisa and Patchouli might have known in advance, but for many people they do lose their loved ones too soon and that kind of question has to be reckoned with.
All round great jam game!
Awwe tysm, I'm so glad you enjoyed it ^^
Since I suck at touhou I was barely able to test Lunatic, so I'm glad it all worked out ^^
Cute game with a nice and sweet story and good art to go along with it. Amazing!
I got to say though, the difficulty spike went vertical a bit starting from Flandre (I played on Lunatic). But bomb spamming everything got me to the end so I can't complain that much. Keep up the good work!
Tysm! And I'm sorry about that, balancing isn't my strong suit ^^;
This is great. I haven't been playing many shmups since rabbit & steel came out (and I haven't played TH6 in years), so it was so fun to get back at it. Nice references to spell cards and some fun new twists too. Normal mode is pretty easy (but good and fun!), but I think that's appropriate for fan games, and there is always Hard and Lunatic.
Laevatein killing you if you try to circle above Flandre is kinda lol when going in blind, but I can respect it. Everything else was very intuitive to dodge.
Thanks for playing! ^^ Normal was built around my skill level, so yeah it airs way on the easy side, tried making up for it with lunatic though ^^;
As for Lavatein, I completely agree with ya there, though at least it's easy to pick up on once you've died
