Great moveset and graphics, but unfortunately, how clunky and committal the controls are really hold the game back. Mainly the inability to cancel attacking into dashing, and inability to change the direction you're swinging your blade while moving.
I spent more time on this than I would have thought at first. And I mean after completing the game, because perfecting the fight is just super fun!
- I really like that I can rebind the keys! I bet it's really good for every player. The controls feel partly rigid and committal but this aspect is done well.
- Some of the characters' animations look a bit stiff, and the background looks flat. But overall very cool art style.
- I think the balance is in a very good place (jam version), right amount of difficulty for the game's short length, AND forgiving enough thanks to the 10 hit points.
(Also, is Embers of Love really that hard?)P.S. : "I bet she doesn't even have 10 fingers."
EDIT: I got a report that apparently the bullets aren't supposed to be that fast lol. Is the game's frame rate uncapped?
A well titled game. Playing this properly takes a coordinated dance of backing away from Koishi during her attacks and cutting in to respond. The game doesn't pull punches but Kokoro has a variety of tools at her disposal, including a lot of air maneuverability that isn't immediately apparent. I might have liked maybe one other attack choice to add more steps to waltz. The challenge felt spot on. The only thing that felt unfair was Embers of Love being substantially more difficult if Koishi randomly throws more horizontal hearts and the floor become lava with all of them bouncing around. The visuals are clear and I appreciate hearing sound effects to add to the performance. I had fun throughout and would play more in this style.
It is hard! I think I was very close to beat it but... I stop playing it in order to play other games from the jam but I really have tons fun with it.
Favorite Parts: The back and forth of avoiding attacks and mashing the hell of the attack button hoping to get to the next spell card and the cutsy art!
Short, simple, awesome. Played through three times cuz I liked it so much. Got a 1:46:33. The controls are well-functioning and responsive, though the dash travels a bit far for my tastes. Might sound silly, but I really love when your main attack has a big delay in a game like this. It feels pretty satisfying to line up the timing of your attack so it hits the enemy while they're moving. The fight is the perfect difficulty for me, too, and quick enough to be super replayable.
I love the artstyle as well. It's such a particular and nostalgic anime-like thing, really charming. The ending's very cute, too. And the fight music is amazing, a dynamic and genuinely beautiful PC98 style track. It's my favorite piece of music I've heard in the jam so far, by a long shot. Honestly, is there any way I could get a download of the song?
In short, it's like a dance-- an emotionally-charged whirl of magic wind that keeps you on your toes the whole way through, given so much depth and meaning with a wonderful song. Also, it has the word dance in the title.
Thanks so much for your words about the music! <3
